The royal family

Any Americans on Here? What is the consensus in USA on Harry and Meghan?

In the UK the media seems mainly 'against' and aghast about H and M (as are all my friends and family - even the anti royal ones). What is the mood in America - is the media/public starting to turn against them, or do they still have strong support?

OP posts:

Gutter press celebrity gossip - most people don't care all that much, except about the racism.

I’m a Brit living in the New York suburbs. Most Americans ask me about Meghan and Harry. I’ve not heard one positive opinion from any of them.

SeaToSki · 07/01/2023 13:35

The PP comparing them to Real Housewives has got it right, except they are less important as they arent actually on the TV.

People who know I am British occasionally ask me about them or the RF in general as they think I might be interested/making conversation. I think if H and M stopped with the media push, they would be forgotten very quickly by the general public in the US (which is probably why they are throwing everything at the media push)

Now the RF who actually live in palaces and ride in golden coaches 🤣 They are far more interesting as they are really Royal!

Susanthehappytrottingelf · 07/01/2023 13:42

My American family and in laws are definitely interested in H and M and talk about it a lot, they seem to find it surprising that I am not that interested.

I think the Oprah interview went down well there but Spare less so

MuftiDay · 07/01/2023 10:06

Saw it mentioned on here that the RF are merely state funded Kardashians. I'd agree with this sentiment. Very expensive entertainment for the masses.

Yes it’s like Eastenders with bigger houses and better clothes.

I'm in the U.K. and everyone I know thinks they're right/ are saying the truth! So not sure there is a consensus here even if the media hates them

I'm in the U.K. and everyone I know thinks they're absolute idiots.

All the people that feign disinterest are so tiresome.

It doesn't make you superior at all, by the way.

👏👏👏

Geebee12 · 07/01/2023 10:08

Aren't they just? I find it interesting that they are clearly so disinterested in the RF/Harry that they click on a link clearly about Harry and Meghan!!!

So 2 brothers are bashing heads had a bit off falling out and everyone should be interested it's not news it happens in every family.
Also no its not clear this was aroyal thread before clicking all I seen in the title was any Americans on here

The cards are stacked against Harry and Meghan battling all the resources of the palace media machine! I feel sorry for them, even though they seem like a couple of chumps!

Has it escaped your attention that Harry IS the media machine , literally the author of his own disgrace and ridicule?

DownNative · 07/01/2023 16:51

USA and some European media summarised here:

www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2023/01/06/prince-harry-spare-memoir-global-reaction-why-airing-familys/

New York Post headline is "Prince Of Wails".....not flattering.

Feelallright · 07/01/2023 17:16

BethJ62 · 07/01/2023 13:48

👏👏👏

Do you mean disinterest? Disinterested and uninterested don’t mean the same thing.

MangshorJhol · 07/01/2023 19:58

Never feigned disinterest at all. I love this stuff. But the question was to those in the US what coverage this was getting and I answered honestly: minimal and not many people really know who they are. Some sympathy post Oprah has dissipated.
Why are some people being so weirdly aggressive about this?! I can’t control it if most of my American friends and family and co-workers don’t give a shit…

onlylarkin · 07/01/2023 20:40

Americans don't really care in my experience. There is little coverage. Maybe a blip or two on headline news, but nothing like what I am hearing is happening in the UK. Though we do like to watch a good train wreck.

My experience is that on more right leaning articles and sites, there are more negative comments and on more left leaning sites, the comments tend to run more favorably.

In case anyone was interested the extent to which what you're reading is being manipulated....

steff13 · 07/01/2023 22:35

Only one of my friends who had prior interest in the royal family knows anything about it. It's not been on my local news at all. I did just see an article on TMZ that Harry has been "written out" of the coronation.

icefishing · 07/01/2023 22:41

I'm a Brit in Chicago.
Americans talk to me about H&M they aren't positive about them.
They assume that Brits are more interested than most actually are.

ferntwist · 07/01/2023 22:44

Of course people are talking about it!

Coxspurplepippin · 07/01/2023 22:50

Menstrualcycledisplayteam, that's about the 56785 (ok, slight exaggeration) time it's been posted on Mumsnet since the leak. It's obvious Harry was reflecting on his time in the army, but the reference to chess pieces and the 'number' was crass (and has been proved, inflammatory) and should not have been published. Context is all, definitely, it doesn't change the fact that Harry should have been more circumspect.

steff13 · 07/01/2023 22:55

ferntwist · 07/01/2023 22:44

Of course people are talking about it!

Where do you live? I'm in Cincinnati, but Maybe someplace like Los Angeles it's more popular.

I'm in the U.K. and everyone I know thinks they're right/ are saying the truth! So not sure there is a consensus here even if the media hates them

I’ve found the opposite

Molly70 · 07/01/2023 22:58

I’m British and live on the east coast of the US. A lot of people talk about the royal family as the Queens platinum jubilee and funeral were covered live on all the major networks so there is a lot of interest. No one likes Harry and Meghan. Selling out your family for megabucks is just as distasteful over here as it is in the UK.

Poppiesway1 · 07/01/2023 22:59

My SIL is Canadian (in USA) and cannot stand Megan. I thought she would be team Megan and didn’t bring it up until she did and then Didn’t stop moaning about her and her treatment of her family.. it seems most of sil’s Canadian friends also dislike Megan too

trucklebrunch · 07/01/2023 22:59

It's interesting to hear that this isn't all over the American news, I assumed the USA was their target audience.

ferntwist · 07/01/2023 23:01

Sorry, my comment was meant as a response to those at the start of the thread shocked that OP talks with her family and friends about Harry and Meghan, in the U.K.

steff13 · 07/01/2023 23:02

Meghan wasn't super well known in the US before all of this happened. I feel like people outside the US think that she was but our experience with her is basically the same as yours. She had a supporting role on a show that not everybody watched and that was basically it. She wasn't somebody that was in the media a lot where people really had an opinion on her.
