Princess Kate wore £176,664 worth of clothing for 138 engagements in 2022.

How do you feel about this?

Kate's most expensive fashion year yet! Princess of Wales wore a record £176,664 worth of new clothes in 2022

But you've been querying why Kate doesn't wear up and coming designers (which she does but by the by) - why would you have an issue if she was loaned a piece of jewellery to showcase a British designer?

Could it just be because she can't do a thing right in your eyes?

No. That's your interpretation. That was clothes which aren't reworn a heck of times. Jewellery is timeless and worn again and again. I hope that explains it for you.

I am talking about the vast jewellery collection owned by the Royal Family stashed away that should be seen.

BethJ62 · 01/01/2023 12:23

And I am pretty sure that Kate would be criticised if she constantly wore very expensive jewellery!
She has several pairs of Accessorise earrings which she wears .
Not every outfit requires her to be dripping with diamonds . As @Coxspurplepippin says , she can’t do anything right !

Coxspurplepippin · 01/01/2023 12:28

But it is seen, often, and when appropriate. Worn by many members of the family, shared, refashioned. Wearing a tiara and fabulous necklace to a state dinner, appropriate. Wearing a tiara and fabulous necklace to a rugby match, not so much. Kate will have her own jewellery, she'll wear things that have been loaned (surely a good thing - showcases designer, not spending money on jewellery that may only be worn in public a few times, stops people complaining of the expense) and wears pieces from the royal collection when appropriate.

purpledalmation · 01/01/2023 12:33

That is 2 and a half engagements a week. That's a lot of outfits she needs to wear. She's known for rewearing clothes and buying off the high street, so this money is not used then thrown away but will form a greater part of her wardrobe.

Considering Meghan Markle had charles pay half this amount for one engagement dress ($75,000], it doesn't sound excessive.

purpledalmation · 01/01/2023 12:34

GCSquirrel · 31/12/2022 15:41

Does she actually have to pay for her clothing? I assumed most of her clothes would have been given to her by designers.

No they're not allowed to accept freebies. They're paid for.

Speedweed · 01/01/2023 12:35

That's just RRP (and shit stirring). Most of her clothes she'll be given free as it's such great publicity.

Also she can't trot to cheapo places like Primark etc because of their supply chain issues/dodgy labour practices, and there would be outcry if she did.

Plus she wears stuff a few times (or borrows it), so it's not like it's only worn once.

She obviously has people checking the origin (eg british designers/brands) so there is nothing unethical.

And she's a woman from a rich family, who married an independently wealthy rich man - she can spend what she likes.

purpledalmation · 01/01/2023 12:40

@Speedweed The RF are not allowed to take freebies, which was one of Meghan markles gripes. I think the clothing allowance comes from the duchy of Cornwall.

Kate is representing the king and the monarchy so she has to look good. I'm sure she'd prefer to spend her life in jeans and t shirts just like every mum.

Can you imagine how she would be ripped to shreds by the media if she stepped out looking anything other than perfect?

Yaslana · 01/01/2023 12:48

CocoLux · 31/12/2022 15:45

It's awful, especially at the moment when so many are struggling. She could champion high street fashion (wearing the odd bit from Zara with priceless jewels doesn't count!) and unknown British designers if she wanted to.

Her jewels are hardly priceless - yes some are expensive, but not excessive

I'm surprised how many people think the royals get designer clothes given to them. I assumed it was common knowledge that they don't do that.

ShamedBySiri · 01/01/2023 14:41

Exactly. They know that when a designer or someone pops up to offer a freebie they are just seeking free advertising of the sort money can't buy.
Even aside of rules around this they don't like to be used in this way.

wordler · 01/01/2023 14:41

Apparently those 10k earrings were a 40th birthday gift from her parents.

ShamedBySiri · 01/01/2023 14:43

Wasn't it Kim kardashian or someone vulgar like that who thought Catherine would be grateful for the chance to wear her frightful clothes? And was surprised to be given the brush off.

wordler · 01/01/2023 14:44

And it’s been speculated the other big expensive new item, the diamond brooch was another 40th birthday gift possibly from Charles.

ShamedBySiri · 01/01/2023 14:48

"Speaking in a recent interview with Now magazine, Kim Kardashian gushed about how much she love's the Duchess's fashions style.
'Kate seems like a really sweet person and she's a princess. We love her sense of fashion. She could wear our looks and team it with one of her hats.'
A representative of Kate Middleton told MailOnline: 'In general terms, the policy of The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge is not to accept any unsolicited gifts unless the sender is known personally to His or Her Royal Highness. Any such gifts are returned to the sender with thanks and an explanation of Their Royal Highnesses' policy.'
A spokesperson for Kim Kardashian was not available for comment."

I can't imagine declining freebies from Kim took much willpower. Grin

Speedweed · 01/01/2023 14:53

@purpledalmation I didn't know they weren't allowed freebies (doesn't surprise me Meagain was cross - plenty of actresses/celebs have a nice line in quietly selling off freebies so it would have felt like a real restriction to have this stopped!).

Would this extend to borrowing stuff though, if Kate gave it back after being worn?

ivykaty44 · 01/01/2023 15:02

what happens to her previous worn outfits?
could outfits be reworn rather than new outfits sought?
Do we really remember what she has worn to an event?

Id think outfits could be sought from more Hugh street shops

Well Charles sis ostentatious in he tastes. Like his grandmother.

ShamedBySiri · 01/01/2023 15:04

That would still involve giving the designer the benefit of free advertising. Why else would they offer to lend her an outfit?

ShamedBySiri · 01/01/2023 15:10

Roussette · 01/01/2023 11:44

Surely they don't need to wear loaned jewellery ? The royal collection is staggering, there must be some bauble within it that would suit? £3.5billion worth of jewels will be on display at the coronation. If they can't find something in that lot... there's something very wrong

How do you know it is £3.5 billion worth that will be on display?

In any case, jewellery in the Royal Collection is of historic value and can hardly be sold off if someone is feeling hard up. The value is priceless as much and in some cases probably more because of the historic value and connections than for the actual precious stones they contain.

That is what is being reported. It is googleable.

That doesn’t even make sense.

Who said they need to loan it? It’s very common for famous people to loan jewellery for events. Even if they own lots of jewellery.

That doesn't make sense either!

Someone on here said the RF wear jewellery that is loaned out to them (in answer to your Q 'who said they need to loan it')
I wondered why when they have a very extensive collection. Anything that is loaned to them won't be better than what is in the royal collection.

BabyFour2023 · 01/01/2023 15:40

I couldn’t care less.. why does it bother you so much?
