Princess Kate wore £176,664 worth of clothing for 138 engagements in 2022.

How do you feel about this?

I couldn’t care less.. why does it bother you so much?

No idea if that is directed at me or not.

If it was, I was answering someone's post to me. Hmm

@Roussette
Because they might be accused of overdoing it if they turn up to open the latest branch of B and Q in the full set of imperial crown and diamonds!
So they have " everyday" jewellery which seems to range from £3 earrings from Accessorize to £10,000 earrings from Daddy.

1200 quid an outfit on average. Royals gonna Royal. Princesses don't wear Primark. It's always been like that.

This. If you are republican just post a post saying ' I'm a republican, who is with me.'

Royal Families are expensive. They are about grandeur and presentation. That's the purpose of their role. Its not a job you are interviewed for on the basis of your intellect. Its about looking the part and almost nothing else.

So you can't shock with the cost of clothing - which is not actually that much considering. Because most people understand what the purpose of the Royal Family is, whether they disagree with having a RF or not.

So make your case on the role as a whole, not on a, reasonable considering the role, wardrobe bill.

wordler · 01/01/2023 16:02

I think that was probably one of the things that Meghan found hard - one of the recent books said she was cross with one of the assistants who was religiously returning all the free stuff being sent to her.

it must have bee n infuriating having been a minor star getting low level freebies before she met Harry suddenly she was at beyond A list fame and couldn’t use that status in the way she probably dreamed about pre Harry.

The problem is the rules on personal gifts from strangers and businesses is very strict.

Anything over 150 pounds cannot be accepted by the individual but is considered a gift to the state. The individual can borrow it if it’s appropriate like jewels or paintings etc but it’s not theirs to resell or give away.

Anything under 150 pounds and not commercially motivated they can keep but it all has to be strictly logged.

The royal family website has pdfs of all the and things they get given on walkabouts and tours - it’s amazing how much weird stuff the public gives them - things like handbags, cardigans, dressing gowns etc. loads of books and framed pictures.

That doesn't make sense either!

Someone on here said the RF wear jewellery that is loaned out to them (in answer to your Q 'who said they need to loan it')
I wondered why when they have a very extensive collection. Anything that is loaned to them won't be better than what is in the royal collection.

No. I said they don’t NEED to loan it. It’s not a need is it. No one said that they need to loan it, simply that it happens.

But that doesn’t mean they can’t or shouldn’t do it. Loads of famous and/or wealthy people don’t NEED to loan jewellery and would have something that could suit, but they still do it.

Your opinion is that there’s nothing better than the royal collection. That not everyone’s opinion.

refuge123 · 01/01/2023 16:08

It's designer clothes though

wishingyouwell · 01/01/2023 16:12

Even more dreadful is the fact she only did 90 engagements in 2022. Very lazy and entitled. Some of these engagements would have been 10 minute zoom calls.

Engagement numbers pre and post children, very poor. Contempt for the tax payer. RF members in 70s, 80s and 90s were consistently clocking lots more engagements.

ssd · 01/01/2023 16:15

Catherine suits absolutely everything she wears, doesn't she.

Blueuggboots · 01/01/2023 16:26

Even if she didn't spend this much money, she's not going to pay my electricity bill is she??!?

Seriously, she has to be in the public eye all the time and needs to represent the country (whether you agree with the monarchy or not, that's what they do!!) so needs to look well turned out.

hoipolloih · 01/01/2023 20:36

I very much doubt she pays for the clothes!

pilates · 01/01/2023 21:05

@tatalan goes with the job I think. Annoyingly, she looks fabulous in everything she wears. I loved the James Bond gold dress, she looked amazing don’t you think?

SlipperSchlepper · 01/01/2023 21:08

Considering the dress Meghan wore for her engagement photos was $75,000 for a one time wear I would say Kate's wardrobe has been kept in quite a good budget. I don't mind tbh w

This has been discussed lots of times . Members of the Royal Family are not allowed to accept freebies .

Abra1t · 01/01/2023 21:31

‘Princess Kate’ 😆

Puzzledandpissedoff · 01/01/2023 21:49

Members of the Royal Family are not allowed to accept freebies

It seems to be a bit more nuanced than that, BethJ62: www.royal.uk/sites/default/files/media-packs/gifts_policy_2003.pdf

As it says, "The fundamental principle governing the acceptance of gifts by Members of The Royal Family is that no gifts, including hospitality or services, should be accepted which would, or might appear to, place the Member of The Royal Family under any obligation to the donor"

... and what might or might not create an obligation can be debatable

I feel brilliant about it. She always look great.

Morestrangethings · 02/01/2023 01:32

Oprah is known as Oprah or Oprah Winfrey in conversations. I’ve never heard her called Winfrey, except in journalistic pieces after her whole name is used the first time. As we aren’t writing to be published, rather to have conversation, I’d say using her first, or both names, would be correct on a forum. Winfrey would be incorrect here. As are Markle and Middleton. (I read Rousette’s original post on this - she was using Markle to make a point in reference to another post, and earlier post.

I think referring to Meghan and Kate is fine. I would never refer to Kate as wait-y Katy or Lazy Katy, or Meghan as Megain or Meagain, or Sparkles or Markle (or the other nasty names they have for them) as I have seen them both referred to on mn - all meant to be derogatory, and all indicate straight away the biased thoughts and feelings held by the poster towards that person.

Meghan may also be a celebrity, but she is also still Duchess of Sussex.

I also use W&K and H&M - I would not use HAM, as although I don’t think the person who used it meant it derogatorily, it still has negative connotations

healthadvice123 · 02/01/2023 01:41

@wishingyouwell with covid still being taken into account its not that low , plus how do you know if they were 10 min zoom calls , you don't your making assumptions

MoscowMules · 02/01/2023 01:42

Wealthy billionaire woman spend thousands of own money on nice clothes.

Stop the press....

Catherine's clothes are not paid for by the tax payer. The sovereign grant, which is what they claim back from the government each year is recorded, it's expenditure is recorded and available to the public of you want to go searching for it.

I can assure you Catherine's clothes are not a listed expense!

You do know what the royal family are massively, massively independently wealthy. 🤦🏻‍♀️

Some people have really good memories. You should probably consider that when posting so many personal details.

Why are Duchess of Sussex fans so critical of Princess of Wales? Why is there even a comparison? If you have to do the whole misogynistic Daily Mail style comparison of two women then surely a better comparison would be Meghan and Sophie/ Sarah? Catherine's spending or lifestyle would be closer to Diana's and Philip's as they are or were married to a monarch and the parent of a future monarch. Sarah, Sophie and Meghan are not, so why the constant pitching M against C? Apples and oranges.

Some (not all) Duchess of Sussex fans are critical of the Princess of Wales.

Some (not all) Princess of Wales fans are critical of the Duchess of Sussex.

Its a two way street.

I don’t like the comparisons either. Both have endured awful misogyny perpetrated by certain sections of the media, Meghan has also endured racism from certain sections of the media.

I can’t work out how what Meghan spends now is at all relevant to the conversation.

MarshaMelrose · 02/01/2023 01:56

I usually write HAM and WAC. It's easier than putting an & inbetween.

I also think it's fine to use surnames. I'd happily use: Pitt, Clooney, Paltrow, Affleck, Bowie, Schofield. Feels stranger to use it for women, I admit, but I come from a generation that we're taught to refer to male authors by their surname but females with a title, eg, Miss Austen.

I never use derogatory names about any of them. I think that's unnecessary.

Morestrangethings · 02/01/2023 02:03

purpledalmation · 01/01/2023 12:33

That is 2 and a half engagements a week. That's a lot of outfits she needs to wear. She's known for rewearing clothes and buying off the high street, so this money is not used then thrown away but will form a greater part of her wardrobe.

Considering Meghan Markle had charles pay half this amount for one engagement dress ($75,000], it doesn't sound excessive.

Meghan’s engagement gown was beautiful. Does anyone know the name of the designer?

Rainbowqueeen · 02/01/2023 02:17

I’m fine with that and I agree with @Letitrainletitrainletitrain that the amount spent on expenses by politicians is far more of a concern.

I love to see Kate branch out even more and support more designers. She wears a lot of Jenny Peckham and Alexander McQueen evening wear and special occasion wear There must be other designers that she could wear. Especially the sustainable and eco friendly designers
