I really liked it. I thought his warmth and sincerity shone through, rather than the quite stiff and (dare I say it) cold demeanour of the Queen. And that’s not a criticism of her; she was a product of her generation. Charles seems determined to bring the tradition into the 21st century.

Anonymouseposter · 26/12/2022 12:09

I loved it. He seems to have a genuine faith and he was inclusive of all faiths. I liked that he praised public sector workers. Of course he finds the “sell all you have and give it to the poor” bit difficult but so do many people. I think he’s going to be a good King.

BethJ62 · 26/12/2022 12:09

I thought it was excellent and liked that he included the other senior Royals although not sure how it will go down in Montecito !

I am not saying he has had this happen, but it almost looks like his arm has been amputated. But surely not? They would surely have told us?
Or maybe he has injured it? I don't know, it looks really odd.

🤣 fucking hell

It's amazing how many times I've got an opportunity to use this meme on MN

Just posted similar on the other thread - Charles got the highest viewing figures for the monarch's speech so far this century - 10.7 million, compared to QE's 8.96 million last year:

🤣 @JaneJeffer

I will leave this one here although it is merely for the Father Ted craic. I’ve been binging again.

It is maybe why the King kept his hand in his pocket…

Or it could just be that one arm was small and the other was…

JaneJeffer · 26/12/2022 12:45

Arcane** 😂

I wonder if I watched the same speech as some of you on this thread. It was fine. But boring. What I would expect. I am a bit aghast that some of you think thanking the public services or acknowledging the cost of living crisis is political. Thanking the public services was common for the Queen years ago when I still watched her annual speech. And it would be tone deaf to pretend there are no issues with rising prices.
I agree with the comment that the footage of William and Kate seemed awkwardly shoved in. As if the speech had already been written and someone said we must include something about William and Kate, what can we shove in.
But pretty underwhelming.

ArcaneWireless · 26/12/2022 13:40

Jane

forgot this one 😘

Would you have the felt the same if H and M had been included ??

JaneJeffer · 26/12/2022 13:53

That one should be pinned at the top of this section Arcane Grin

Yes I would have. Note I did not say that William and Kate should not be included. But the way they were was odd, as if it was an afterthought.

bakalava · 26/12/2022 13:56

😁

You're an absolute cracker, @antelopevalley, I'll give you that!
Bless you, @ArcaneWireless for the Father Ted craic. I've been re watching, and it's still hilarious!

Maireas · 26/12/2022 14:08

"Watching tv again, Dougal? Chewing gum for the mind"
"No thanks, Ted"

ArcaneWireless · 26/12/2022 14:10

It is just magic isn’t it maireas?

I should be bubble and squeaking.

i am rewatching Ted and a bit of mnetting instead. It never gets old. 😊

ArcaneWireless · 26/12/2022 14:13

I was outcraiced from the get go 😆

Maireas · 26/12/2022 14:13

Ach, the bubble and squeak can wait.
Are you a fan of the Flann O'Brien books? Very similar absurdity.

ArcaneWireless · 26/12/2022 14:25

I’m not aware of his work maireas How many arms did he have?

I’ll look him up. It sounds as though it may be up my street. Thank you. 😘

Maireas · 26/12/2022 14:28

I don't know about his arm situation, but he's a very funny writer and I think Mathews and Lenihan are fans - there's a bit of style similarity, possibly the funnier bits of James Joyce, too.
Just brilliant.

ArcaneWireless · 26/12/2022 14:30

That’ll be me scouring for reading material for the coming year then. Thank you for the recommendation ☺️

Maireas · 26/12/2022 14:34

Look for "At Swim Two Birds" and
"The Third Policeman"
