Doesn't he often have swelling in his hands? There could be fluid retention that makes him a bit stiff.

I thought it was great, and very relevant and to the point.

Byfleet · 25/12/2022 19:28

I immediately thought it looked like he had had a stroke. He didn’t move that arm at all and it was just hanging there. Later on I saw pictures of him at church and he was using both hands. It’s odd, because of course it’s recorded and you’d think someone would have picked up on it. Mind you, it would take a very confident person to tell him what the problem was.

Eve · 25/12/2022 19:50

Didn’t see it but it upset Kelvin McKenzie ( right wing ex editor of the Sun ) for being woke & left - so sounds like it was a great speech!

antelopevalley · 25/12/2022 19:51

@Byfleet Maybe he had a stroke before the recording but has now recovered more?

Apparently it was recorded on the 13th, surely it would take longer then that to recover.

I think it's just odd as most people are expressive With their hands when speaking. Perhaps he just isn't one of those people.

It's been commented on for pretty much his whole adult life how Charles stands with one hand in his pocket - he's always done it.

Antelopevalley, your concern is touching Grin

Quietly political and a shot at the government for the state of this country. Supportive of the need for public service, including through charity work

Serving the public also possibly linked to H&M, in that H is not fulfilling his duty.

Liked it, clear concise, photos celebrated the working royals.

I just assumed it was to avoid this...

MarshaMelrose · 25/12/2022 20:25

Looks like he's had a stroke/his arm amputated. - wtaf are you people on?

Indeed. This broadcast was recorded on 13 December. 3 days later on 16th December he was at the Jewish Community Centre dancing, both arms full present and functioning. 🙄

picklemewalnuts · 25/12/2022 20:29

Very much focused on the people and community.

ZenNudist · 25/12/2022 20:46

I enjoyed it. A bit different from his mum who was always seated. Clever to do it in St George's Chapel. Loved the choir. Hit the right notes. Not a big KC fan but I thought they all did a good job.

MrsFinkelstein · 25/12/2022 20:56

Charles has always put his "free hand" in his pocket during speeches, he was taught to do this when he was younger, same as how he fidgets with his ring.
It's to stop unnecessary arm flappage.
I thought this was common knowledge but obviously it's just something I read back in the 90s.

Here he is doing it in 2012.

saffronrabbit · 25/12/2022 22:11

I thought it was heartfelt and sincere. I thought the venue was a nice change.

I'm going to have to rewatch it now to examine the arm.

christmasfairy22 · 26/12/2022 00:22

I didn't watch/hear it, and I was upset when the Queen passed - but I have to say never ever have I watched the Queens ape each and thought she gives a shit about people. She worked hard, didn't have affairs, but I'm not sure how much humanity she had.
I hope Charles is a better King.

Beercrispsandnuts · 26/12/2022 00:28

For gods sake. Speculating this man had his arm amputated or he had a stroke, that’s sickening, he was clearly seen as church today and it was live, with both arms working fine, wtaf is wrong with folks they’d write this stuff

Eybev · 26/12/2022 03:18

I very much appreciated the King’s words. A carefully balanced message indicating his concern for the people of Britain and a little dig at those in power. I lost my mum last Tuesday so it was particularly resonant the fact that it’s his first Christmas without his mother.

Unthinkable8 · 26/12/2022 03:34

I thought it was brilliant

vera99 · 26/12/2022 04:11

I loved the part where he said as one of the richest families in the country I will heronforward be foregoing the sovereign grant and pay for all my families expenses out of my private income. Nice touch for the new monarch 😀

cadentiasidera · 26/12/2022 09:33

I was pleasantly surprised by his warm manner and also thought the parts about food banks, public sector workers etc were a bit of a dig at the government. The fact that he mentioned teachers made me surprisingly emotional - I'm a teacher and it often feels like we get a bad press and little recognition. Of course the NHS, emergency services etc need to be recognised and thanked, but it was lovely to be so positively included too.

I think he speaks really well.

Much better than the Queen.

Yes I do too.

I often thought she sounded a bit robotic and emotionless. Charles added a bit of warmth to it.

I loved it ..he comes across as warm, genuine and caring. Just what we need...not a royalist really but if anyone has to be King, i'm glad it's him.

Novella4 · 26/12/2022 11:39

Meaningless words

A shallow facade

If he announced he was putting his hand in his deep pockets to pay for his own unnecessary 100 million PR coronation to take the pressure off the tax payer - then his concern may have a degree of believably Let's see if he does

Robin233 · 26/12/2022 11:53

Missed the queen
Need to rewatch now sober
