Monarch wants to use ceremony to showcase ‘UK plc’ internationally, despite being deeply conscious of the cost of living crisis

How do you feel about this?

Good. There's not going to be another one in my lifetime (probably) I'd be bloody gutted to get the cut price, cheapo version.

Pomp it up!!

bellac11 · 24/12/2022 14:40

The 'value' version!!

upinaballoon · 24/12/2022 15:06

This piper __ Is he a private self-employed person who charges customers for his musical abilities or is he a member of the armed forces who happens to be a piper? Is it always the same piper or is it 'a' piper? Has anyone gleaned any more information?

Puzzledandpissedoff · 24/12/2022 15:20

Really who knows what minor Royals like Princess Alice look like?

I didn't think there was one any more?
Unless you're thinking of Princess Alice, Duchess of Gloucester, and she probably won't look very good on account of being dead since 2004 Xmas Wink

@upinaballoon the current piper is Paul Burns who also piped for the late Queen. He's a serviceman attached to the Royal Regiment of Scotland, but I can't imagine he's doing much military serving between waking up Charles, escorting him to audiences, etc.

Roussette · 24/12/2022 15:35

How embarrassing to have a man stood outside your window to pipe you awake. It's a joke isn't it?!

So much for slimming down. That obviously didn't mean cutting back!

Sorry it was Princess Alexandra that I was thinking about. I only learnt of her via MN when someone mentioned she'd turned up to open something.

I never took slimming down as cutting back though?
I don’t think it indicates it, especially for ‘events’.

As someone said, we’ve got the carriages and jewels already, may as well make use of it

Crowd fund sounds like you would be good for 20 quid in the bucket.

No point whatsoever in slimming down then!

Same amount of money to enrich less royals!
I should've realised

Only the same amount Roussette?

You might want to reconsider that if, once the palace repairs are finished, the "temporary uplift" to the Sovereign Grant somehow becomes permanent Wink

I have the date in my diary as 2027 when BP repairs will be done and I expect a downshift in the SG then! It will be appalling if not, it is something like£34M per year Xmas Shock

RulaCabula · 26/12/2022 17:17

Well, one thing we can agree on is that the repairs are likely to go way over budget. Good job the Royals have access to the seeming unlimited pockets of the taxpayer.

Why do you say that? Windsor Castle was brought in on time and well under budget.
The money doesn't go to the RF, it's for repair of the building. How does the RF benefit financially? King Charles doesn't even want to live there and he's yet to confirm that he'll move in when the repairs are complete.

I’m glad he’s going all out.
I love all the pomp.

Plus when you have so many people flocking to streets it does absolutely wonders for local businesses, so swings and roundabouts in regards to costs. These events definitely boost the local economy

Shops are usually closed on such Bank Holidays.

Well, he can't be expected to wake himself up. He can't even move a sheet of paper of desk in preparation for signing a document.

The coronation is on the Saturday though, so they won’t be

upinaballoon · 27/12/2022 22:46

So the piper was appointed to be the late Queen's piper in 2021 and the tradition of having a piper goes back to 1843. The Queen had others.

In whichever report I was looking in it said that he pipes at 9 a.m. I should hope the King's had his boiled egg, cleaned his teeth, been to the lavatory and had his bath well before 9 a.m., and got through half of the red box by 9.30, so I see it as more of a 'nice thing' than an alarm call.

upinaballoon · 27/12/2022 22:54

I shall not reject a cut-price coronation. I shall embrace one and re-use the red, white and blue ribbon left over from the 1977 Jubilee.

vera99 · 28/12/2022 09:03

The Red Box just requires him signing with a pesky pen he doesn't need to read them. Flunkeys will have earmarked stuff which has personal financial implications for his considerable wealth and he can do his back door spider memos to ministers entreating them to exempt him from laws that we plebs have to adhere to and are exempt from FOI scrutiny.

When all that's done he can go and talk to a tree about the disagreeable weather we are having.

Gizza job I can do that ....

I still have my student Stuff the Jubilee Badge from 1977 !

I'm all in favour of a glorious celebration. With all the horrible things that are going on in the world it will be great to have an enjoyable day off from fretting about things. It will be a reminder that some things stay the same.

AskMeMore · 11/04/2023 11:24

Charles has always been known as a big spender on himself. Of course he was going to splash taxpayers money on the Coronation. He will continue to be extravagant on himself and Camilla while cutting money to others.
