Calling Harry 'H'

Am I the only one who finds it very odd to hear Harry being called 'H' or is it an American/British thing?

I'm not from either countries so have no idea but every time I hear it from Meghan it just feels like scratching chalkboard.

It's a nickname, pack it in 🙄

Ffs the depths some of you will sink to just to find an excuse to slag this woman off is unbelievable. Its bloody relentless.

Hard agree. I realise this is the Royal Family board but fucking Hell, give the poor woman a rest. Some of you really need to take a long hard look at why you dislike a complete stranger so much.

ZenNudist · 15/12/2022 20:12

I have the same nickname and I like it. Only good friends call me H. Like Harry I don't have a name you can easily shorten. You can't call him Harr.

BuffaloCauliflower · 15/12/2022 20:12

I’m English and in my family we often abbreviate names to initials, didn’t realise it was any kind of issue 😂

DontFeatureMeOnSocialMedia · 15/12/2022 20:13

Oh for goodness sake I know loads of people who do this.

There's loads of genuine reasons to criticise Harry and Meghan but this one has to win for being the most ludicrous.

SoupaDoupa · 15/12/2022 20:15

It's so cringe

IGoWalkingAfterMidnight · 15/12/2022 20:16

again, very careful not to criticise the person only express my own feelings about it.

I have a three syllable, 8 letter name that I never have shortened. My children have 7 & 8 letter names that are not shortened. It’s hardly surprising I’d dislike an initial being used.

Showing my age, but the only time I can think of hearing an initial being used is when Faith calls Buffy ‘B’ and that’s not friendly!

panko · 15/12/2022 20:17

H from Steps

everlastingpanini · 15/12/2022 20:18

I am from another country and I use initials with my DH and DCs. DH is 'Martin' and my parents call him 'Big M'. (which immediately outs where i am from for some MNetters.) Grin '

Ostryga · 15/12/2022 20:18

Fuck me! You lot will find ANYTHING to get your knickers in a twist about these two. Get a frigging life 😂

For what it’s worth I have 2 posh friends both called Harriet both call H by friends and family. So if you haven’t heard it before you’re probably not spending time in the right circles.

pigsducksandchickens · 15/12/2022 20:21

Tbh my thought would be she can't stand his name. I struggled with my exH name and tried to find a nickname but didn't really work. Could be worse, if she shortened his actual name she'd call him 'Hen' 😂

everlastingpanini · 15/12/2022 20:22

Well she sometimes calls him Haz so i guess he is just the Duke of Hazard really.

Rushingfool · 15/12/2022 20:29

It's American isn't it? Like how people are called 'TJ' or to use a famous one, 'OJ'. Just a cultural habit I suppose.

panko · 15/12/2022 20:36

Hazzur

HarryMeg · 15/12/2022 20:37

Hairy H

I often call my son T. He doesn't seem to care.

There's no way you can hold this against them. Honestly. Other things maybe but you can't get upset about this.

The 'right? circles?!

LOL

Facecream · 15/12/2022 20:40

Isn’t his actual name Henry.. so maybe it’s alluding to that?

faffadoodledo · 15/12/2022 20:41

Someone's probably already said it. But all I can think of is H from Steps when she says it

panko · 15/12/2022 20:41

Was he HRH Harry? I think its cute.

That was my thought too

I take it as Meghan’s way of showing how super laid back and informal they are compared to the buttoned-up senior royals. It’s grating.

Also how I see it

DoreenWinkings · 15/12/2022 20:42

FancyFanny · 15/12/2022 20:07

It only works with certain letters. You never hear anyone called C, or F for example.

Ha, most people I know call me C.

I’m genuinely concerned that Mumsnet is being trolled by bots starting negative threads about Meghan & Harry. So many about so many little things.

I agree, the same names show up very regularly.

toastofthetown · 15/12/2022 20:43

I knew a Harry who was often called H as a child. Not sure if he is as an adult as we lost touch but it's not an odd nickname. But nitpicking on what some calls their husband is truly bizarre.
