Calling Harry 'H'

HarryMeg · 15/12/2022 19:06

Am I the only one who finds it very odd to hear Harry being called 'H' or is it an American/British thing?

I'm not from either countries so have no idea but every time I hear it from Meghan it just feels like scratching chalkboard.

Oh ugh I HATE this so much, I have no idea why, but it just grates on me. It's so forced and cringey. Nothing particularly to do with Harry and Meghan, I hate anyone doing it.

The only time I feel like it works is for women with names that start with B or G. Everything else is just weird.

That's my random pet peeve!

Lapland123 · 15/12/2022 20:44

Think M is copying Gossip Girl 🙄

AndAllOurYesterdays · 15/12/2022 20:45

Honestly! This is a ridiculous thing to criticise anyone for. I call my daughter 'V' as it's the first letter of her name. It's just a shortened nickname like Will, or Meg or Di etc etc

LadyHarmby · 15/12/2022 19:26

I’m genuinely concerned that Mumsnet is being trolled by bots starting negative threads about Meghan & Harry. So many about so many little things.

Or is it backing up their claims?

Cleaneve · 15/12/2022 20:47

His name isn’t actually Harry though is it? On his birth certificate it’s Henry but he’s always been known as Harry I think?
so it could be a cute nickname, several people in the show included her gorgeous mum call him H. He calls her M.
I can’t get worked up about it tbh. Rather H&M than I wish I was your tampon any day of the week!

BellaTheDarkOverlord · 15/12/2022 20:47

I couldn't. DH name starts with an R. I'd sound like a pirate constantly.

blueflagflyhigh · 15/12/2022 20:47

I also can't stand it and I noticed her mum was calling that too.

I bet his family are all wtf, no one has ever called him that before! Why would u allow someone to call u it, it's not a nickname as such or shortened version of Harry it's his first initial. Like calling her M just weird.

Ooohhh yes gossip girl, you've hit the nail on the head - gossip girl was where my hatred for this began back in my formative years 🤣

B made sense, but S just did not work at all.

Ostryga · 15/12/2022 20:18

Fuck me! You lot will find ANYTHING to get your knickers in a twist about these two. Get a frigging life 😂

For what it’s worth I have 2 posh friends both called Harriet both call H by friends and family. So if you haven’t heard it before you’re probably not spending time in the right circles.

The bloke from Steps was called H. Is that the right kind of circle?

Or men in black.

fanjosaysi · 15/12/2022 20:49

Why does EVERYTHING they do have to be a problem? Even if you don't like them, this level of criticism is unhinged. To PPs whinging- they can use whatever nicknames they wantSmile

KaleAtYale · 15/12/2022 20:50

I know 2 men called Harry, everyone calls one of them H, the other is Harry to everyone else apart from his wife that calls him H. We also have a friend with a daughter with a long name and we all sometimes affectionately use her initial. I’d say it’s not unusual.

Strange it should bother you so much as to post, but I guess the obsession is real for some. 😬

Agree. I didn't realise this was a royal thread! Just responded, as several others have - it's perfectly normal.

I’m English and in my family we often abbreviate names to initials, didn’t realise it was any kind of issue 😂

You're fine, it's only an issue if you're Meghan

Redcrayons · 15/12/2022 21:05

I call DS1 by his initial.
DS2 gets a shortened version of his name, his initial just doesn’t sound right.

they only get their proper name if I’m talking about them or they’re in trouble.

Haz grates more on me than H, but what a woman calls her husband is none of my business.

If you heard Kate calling William, Wills would you feel the same?

wackamole · 15/12/2022 21:05

It's just a way of shortening the name for ease of speech in a quick conversation. Neither "Har" nor "Ha" nor "Ry" flows very naturally, so H it is. Makes sure it's short to say or write. I'm sure I've seen/heard it done in the UK - loads of people called Dee, Jay, Kay, Em, El, etc. My sister has a one-syllable, 5 letter name and still gets called by the initial (B/Bee). It may not be ideal for some names, though, if they get abbreviated to say Pee or Eff.

I would if she called him 'W'

My DS is Joe and I often call him J. Had a friend years ago called Helen, known by most as H (and she’d call herself that too). Have another male friend who is known by his first and last initials. All from the UK. As others have said, really common to do this and just like any other nickname. I don’t read anything into it more than I would any other nickname.

Pallisers · 15/12/2022 21:17

The attitude to this woman is insane. I fully expect to see a thread complaining that she is breathing contemptuously of the king or blinking in a way that dehumanises her husband. It is really weird.

That said, even though it is very common form of nickname/pet name, the H and M thing reminds me of the new Mrs Elton in Emma with her Mr. E and her caro sposo

Ch3wylemon · 15/12/2022 21:19

ThorsBedazzler · 15/12/2022 19:32

H?

Call Ted and the rest of the Line of Duty gang, we've found H!

You beat me to it.

VeggieSalsa · 15/12/2022 21:21

My mum used to call me H.

Just a nickname for a name that doesn’t otherwise lend itself well to nicknames. Not offensive.
