The royal family

Discussing the things we liked about Harry and Meghan's Netflix documentary series

1000 replies

MrsMaxDeWinter · 08/12/2022 14:22

There are so many threads on things posters hated about Harry and Meghan, the Netflix series, and fair play to those posters, so I thought I would have a go at stating a thread discussing some of the things that posters liked about the series.

I'll start.

I liked that this was supposed to be this bomb detonation, but has actually been a measured, warm, and loving look at H and M's relationship, and the pressures that the press put on them, and also on other royals. I genuinely did not notice anything incendiary. Maybe that is still to come.

I enjoyed the thoughtful insights shared on the invisible contract, especially, as Harry says, having to perform for a press that you know has said hurtful things about people you love.

I loved the warm memories of Sandringham, and meeting the Queen. And Meghan's memories of growing up. I think it was a wise, though sad, that they did not include Thomas. I really loved hearing Doria: my favourite bit is when a journalist offered her money, for an interview about Meghan and she said, "That's my child!"

I also learned for the first time about Meghan's relationship with her sister Samantha's daughter Ashleigh. I had no idea that she had been raised by her grandparents who adopted her, or that she had such a warm and caring relationship with Meghan. Along with Doria's, that was my favourite interview.

I enjoyed hearing from her childhood friends, as it is often said here that she had no friends who came to the wedding etc, just celebrities. They seem a tight nit grip who have been here fr years, and I am glad she has them.

I was gobsmacked that she needed security in Toronto after the relationship was announced.

I also thought the discussion on racism, in its wider context of colonialism and imperialism, was very well done, but then again it was led by David Olusoga and Afua Hirsch, who are always great, and I love their writing.

Most of all I love that Harry confronted head on the Nazi uniform debacle, and what he learned from it. And I loved, loved, loved, the segment on his life in Lesotho where they gave him the Sesotho name, "Mahale". A wonderful name.

“It was one of the biggest mistakes of my life,” Harry said. “I felt so ashamed afterwards. All I wanted to do was make it right. I sat down and spoke to the chief rabbi in London, which had a profound effect on me. I went to Berlin and spoke to a Holocaust survivor. I could have just ignored it and made the same mistakes over again in my life. But I learned from that.”

I predicted on another thread that Harry would address this and other episodes head on in his book. I was scoffed roundly for this. I expect him to say more in is book, and I am happy to be proved right.

If only for this, I am very glad they did this.

🤣

Onedayatatime22 · 08/12/2022 14:26

I’m with you OP. I thought they came across as a couple who have been through hell, who care for each other and their children beyond measure, and who are sick of everyone else warping their story. The biggest evil in this is the British tabloid press - utter scum.

TheShellBeach · 08/12/2022 14:29

🙄They're really, really awful. Good luck with getting people to be positive on this thread, OP.

I find M & H completely nauseating.

Icedlatteplease · 08/12/2022 14:30

Yep I totally agree OP

But then I am becoming increasingly republican

Onedayatatime22 · 08/12/2022 14:30

Then go and complain about them on the other thread Hmm

MrsMaxDeWinter · 08/12/2022 14:32

Indeed @Onedayatatime22 the villain of he piece is not the Royal family, Harry expresses an understanding that they need that invisible contract as an extension of their PR, but it clearly became too much for them.

I had no idea that the tabloid had gone to the extent of fabricating quote from her fried's mother, I think it was Jill. The stuff in Toronto, and having to hire security on the sets of Suits, and the wired trailers was really shocking to me. This was corroborated in interviews by others on the production, and by her security and her agent, just in case people jump in and call her a liar.

There is nothing that justifies that sort of intrusion. She wasn't even in the family then.

So many takeaways.

Firstly, no ‘trashing’ of the royal family. They’ve barely mentioned them.

The absolute disgrace of the press. It’s absolutely disgusting what they get up to.

Getting an idea of what it’s like to grow up (Harry) and live with that level of press and gossip about you. So, so difficult.

Confirmation of what I always thought - she didn’t ‘know what she was getting into’ and she wasn’t advised how to behave and what to do, she just winged it.

I think they’re brave. They said ‘we don’t want to live like this and you know what? We don’t have to’

There are so many threads you can discuss them. You really don't have to be here if there is nothing you liked about the series.

Thanks for the good luck, but I generally find that people respond positively but then of course there are people like you who just have to jump in because you can't bear anything positive to be said about them.

I like that is all a fantasy brewed in the heads of Harry and Meghan

Novella4 · 08/12/2022 14:38

@MrsMaxDeWinter

Pause a minute . Why is there this assumption that :

they ( the royals I assume ) need that invisible contract as an extension of their PR, but it clearly became too much for them

Why the hell is the media propping up the royals ?? There so much more to this side of it .
The MSM pushed the royals / highlights what the royals want shown / ignores what they don't want shown etc

THAT is my complaint . The royals can't stand on their own merit . They are shaped and presented and the people are virtually brainwashed into supporting the monarchy nonsense .

I want that looked at before all the family gossip - that's a side issue

But yes I agree H and M are brave .

MrsMaxDeWinter · 08/12/2022 14:40

Exactly @LadyHarmby

They are mostly discussing the press.

Am gutted about Ashleigh not being invited to the wedding on the recommendation of their comms team, because "how do we explain that the half-sister's is not invite dot the wedding but her daughter is."

I think everyone made a bad call on this, but I can understand why it was made. Ashleigh is incredibly gracious person.

I agree Op.

I haven't watched all of it yet <shakes fist - damn you work>

But the parts I've seen so far are essentially talking about the press intrusion, which we know to be true.
The UK press (well scumbag tabloid press) and paparazzi are known to evade privacy and sometimes commit illegal activities to get thier "story"

Nothing I've seen so far attacks the RF.

Onedayatatime22 · 08/12/2022 14:41

I think it's tragic that there is so much hatred of H&M based on what? The tabloid press and their malicious reports... people would rather believe the media crap than dare to believe that actually H&M may be telling their truths. Why?

GetThatHelmetOn · 08/12/2022 14:41

The absolute disgrace of the press. It’s absolutely disgusting what they get up to.

Yep,, I was just a bit surprised that the paparazzis targeting Katie Price court day was as a subject the Sussexes felt so directly personal to them.

That Harry Potter premiere must have been terrifying too

Backstreetsbackalrightdadada · 08/12/2022 14:44

Any mention of him apologising for using the P word slur?

No… as is his tradition, been like that for years.

Oswin · 08/12/2022 14:45

I really enjoyed it. Its been funny watching the usual lunatics trying to twist it into something else.

WidowTwanki · 08/12/2022 14:45

He didn’t learn from it though did he?

He went on shortly afterwards to call a colleague our little paki friend and raghead and filmed it.

I am disgusted that he swerved his additional abusive racist behaviours and that you @MrsMaxDeWinter don’t expect more from him?

Onedayatatime22 · 08/12/2022 14:45

So much whataboutery... have you watched it?

“Whatabout” not being a racist?

Onedayatatime22 · 08/12/2022 14:47

Have you watched it? Listened to what he had to say, about his self reflection since being with M? Easy to pick up on stories from the press...

cinnabongene · 08/12/2022 14:48

The closing credits

BedTaker · 08/12/2022 14:49

Ha, got deleted for quoting the exact racist terms that Harry used about a colleague. Harry, who framed a large part of the documentary around how terrible it is that everyone else is so racist.

Cancelled my Netflix a year ago as wasn’t enough to watch… did he apologise for using slurs then? Vague statements about learning show the opposite is true
