So does anyone know anything about Earthshot finalists? William and Kate went to Boston because of Earthshot, but all aI have read about is what Kate and William have done in Boston and what Kate is wearing. Why are the press not covering what Earthshot is actually about?

On tv now
looks like a lot of celebrities traveled to get there and the winners are on video
so green

I’d you look at the first page of this thread, wordler has explained the logic behind this.

sashagabadon · 04/12/2022 18:36

Well done William. A very good global initiative.

Thanks just did and that made sense
but I still think preaching about saving the plant, whilst celebs like David beckham travel to get there is hypocritical.
been out so only saw the end

I am interested in Earthsot but feel a bit uncomfortable about the whole "high profile party with glitzy celebrities" approach. I think people with funds and contacts like PW could fund game-changing projects without all the showbiz. I read a BBC item about the finalists where they explained that the panel had people like Shakira and footballer Dani Alves on it. It left me a bit 🙄

I am probably not articulating this well. It makes me think of the Bible when Jesus advises to give to the poor in secret and without public fanfare, because God sees into your heart anyway. Climate change is an important topic that touches us all and the whole glitz and privilege thing is a bit distasteful.

Serenster · 04/12/2022 18:43

I loved the stories about the winners - every one a brilliant endeavour. The Nonpla being based in the UK could do with being partnered with one of the big UK supermarket brands who create so much unnecessary pack against for their food. It would amazing for them to transform that market.

(The show also showed, not told, why it was good idea having the nominees in ther home bases - each of them had a large group to celebrate with when the prize was announced - in the case of the Kenyan woman who has developed a safer cooking stove, she had her daughter’s school mates also there to celebrate with too - so they were completely comfortable in their environment, and it was genuinely touching).

Here is a link to the members of the Earthshot council with their biographies. Shakira has been involved in the foundation of schools in Columbia

I can cope with a few celebrities flying in once a year to highlight some of the amazing initiatives shown tonight. The seaweed packaging and the cooking stoves eg.How can anyone criticise people on the ground actually finding practical solutions and being given a higher profile and massive monetary boost to take things forward. What are we all doing out there that's going to make a significant difference?

hellsbells99 · 04/12/2022 20:04

I very much enjoyed watching it. The ideas were great and it was very educational too. Anything we can do to help with climate change has to be positive.

wordler · 04/12/2022 20:31

The success of initiatives like this depend on encouraging investors and policy makers to get behind the projects.

That’s one of the things high profile royals are useful for they have a huge convening power across lots of different parts of life and can bring people together across nationalities and political divides.

Investors and politicians also like being smoozed a bit which is why they add in high profile events through the year that they can mix with the royals, celebrity backers and the finalists.

What’s going to be interesting to me is how well supported the winners and finalists are over the years after their cohort year. That’s where the strength lies - matching up these innovative solutions with on going finance and linking up the different technologies to create even bigger better solutions.

The oceans projects already have many crossover project potentials. I’m cautiously optimistic for some big improvements to happen over the next ten years.

The Mukuru Stove project is so inspirational. (I'm catching up now.)

"so they were completely comfortable in their environment,"
Yeah can't have poor black people at an event with royalty or celebrities. For their sake of course. They would be just sooo uncomfortable.

Mukuru Stoves looks good. They have already won other awards and have some big hitters on their board. I am sure they appreciate the extra million pounds. But they are not unknown.

That’s not the case at all. None of the winners were there. Nothing to do with where they came from.

GrouchyKiwi · 04/12/2022 20:42

Notpla is so brilliant.

And the leather made from flowers is amazing. I love the creativity.

I don’t think it is a requirement that the initiatives be “unknown”. All of the entire have already had some success. The prize just allows them to build up more. Do you begrudge these enterprises this extra help to continue their excellent work?

smilesy · 04/12/2022 20:45

Entries. Not entire

antelopevalley · 04/12/2022 20:47

@smilesy I question their impact. Multiple posters have said these awards help projects attract more investment. But if they have already won awards and big hitters on their board, then I am unsure if winning Earthshot will achieve this.
They get a million pounds, so that bit is fine, every bit helps. It will have some impact, but I think its impact is way over sold.

Good grief. You just can't, for one millisecond, recognise that the project just might be a good thing, and achieve something amazing. Nope, just nip, nip, nip - if the royal family are involved it's bad and racist and terrible, goes without saying....

Cloud9isnowclosed · 04/12/2022 20:54

I think Earthshot is proving to be a really interesting approach to recognising and supporting place based initiatives - it won't be without problems. But let's remember the OP regularly sources thread material from celebitchy which is very anti William and Kate. As ever with GCSE exams - explore your source material.

The prize and the money are to help upscale solutions offered by the initiatives. Have you looked a t the Earthshot website? Here is the link . I must say I agree with Cox. You are starting to nit pick for the sake of it 😆

GrouchyKiwi · 04/12/2022 20:57

I love the Ranger network from Aussie.

Serenster · 04/12/2022 21:19

Actually Antelopevalley I was thinking of the fact that they got up be amongst their co-workers, friends, families and community, and they got to jump up and down and shriek with them. The rangers in particular were on one of the beaches they work on. They weren’t sitting at a small cocktail table politely acknowledging the applause. But you do you.

Because it's a nonsense Vanity project...?

This sums the whole thing up .

W and K are massive hypocrites re the environment as are most ultra wealthy people .

Honestly - people praising Kate for her ( perfectly tailored - how does that work when she returns it ? ) rented dress when she is nothing but a clothes horse the rest of year

'Make sure we get photographed taking a commercial flight ' - when they'll be having multiple holidays using private jets

They both desperately need personality transplants but failing that - new PR

Novella4 · 05/12/2022 10:00

Actually I shouldn't comment on their personalities - they can't help that .

But the cynical PR - ugh

smilesy · 05/12/2022 10:05

Do you agree, Novella, that ignoring the Royals’ involvement, it is a worthwhile project?
