Foreign trips are such an incredible opportunity to showcase all things Brit.

She in particular can really elevate all of it.

Why wear bloody Chanel?

Maybe to allow her to have just a teeny bit of agency in her life?

Expecting people to justify their choice of clothing is a massive overstep, IMO.

My goodness - are we now saying she has no agency?

Asking that she wear and promote British means she has no agency?

It is three or four days.

It is a PUBLIC visit for goodness sake.

Erdem Moralıoğlu is Canadian so based on Op's belief re Mqueen, I don't think it counts....Grin

Just to completely derail the thread here I have to say I am absolutely loving her selection of suits lately!

So chic and crisp and just a really great look on her. I’m loving it! The shoes she wears with them are gorgeous!

Also off topic I usually really like a lot
of what Meghan wears too. Apart from that red dress she wore. I didn’t hate the green one either. Not her best look but definitely not her worst.

antelopevalley · 02/12/2022 15:15

@Justasec321 The rule in these threads is it is never the Royal Family's fault for anything. It is always the aides, palace staff, the staff in the country or city they are visiting, the press, the public, etc. Never ever their fault.

mathanxiety · 02/12/2022 15:15

Also, for those who seem confused, this is not an official visit.

It is a trip for the purpose of promoting the Earthshot Prize, an environmental cause sponsored by William.

There is an official visit under way right now in the US - President Macron and Mme Macron of France are being wined and dined in tbe White House.

Kate does not promote relatively unknown British designers. Diana did use to.
It is a relatively minor issue in comparison to many issues about the Royal Family. But it does show that even on minor issues they can not get it right.

Rixo, Hope Fashion, Me and Em and Winser London would doubtless disagree with you there - Kate has worn all of them, and the owners have been delighted with the attention it brought them.

The OP also seems to be a bit confused by what is and isn’t a British brand. For example, Erdem and Roland Mouret have foreign-born designers, but they are members of the British Fashion Council on the basis that they contribute both creatively and economically to the British fashion industry. So if Kate wears them, she is still promoting the British fashion industry.

antelopevalley · 02/12/2022 15:16

@MistletoeandBaileys I like the suits as well. I do not like the pussy bow blouses.

Born in Montreal, but spent much of his childhood in Birmingham and his design house is based in London. Wiki lists him as a 'British designer'.

Save yourself the energy op. No one even noticed that they were on some tour/trip. The whole family is a sinking ship doubt any designer cares about being worn by Kate either .

Quite a few people have noticed actually Hmm

She is visiting the Earthshot awards.

I can see the thread now...

"Royals pay lip service to climate change."
"Kate dressed from head to toe in brand new clothes from young designers."
"She has a huge wardrobe of clothes, so why isn't she wearing those instead of wasting taxpayers' money by buying new and contributing to the destruction of the planet?"

The woman literally cannot win.

You mean to tell me that she has NO British designed clothes in her wardrobe that she can recycle if that is the point of the Mouret??

An a Chanel handbag, the size of an envelope, costing over 2,000 is a nod to the environment??

Give over.

I am ALL for recyle of clothes, bags, the lot.

But for goodness sake RECYCLE BRITISH.

The French don't need us - they really don't!

Like 2 million other people I had a glance at the Daily Mail this morning (now for that you can lambast me). Consider yourself lambasted for being so gullible.

Andlike 2 million others I saw French design on a British Princess at a public event. How many of those 2 million would immediately recognise a Chanel garment when they saw one (unless the DM makes a headline of it, of course)?

And it got me thinking.... And when you were thinking, did you, at any point, wonder where Prince William gets his suits, ties, shirts and shoes from?

She’s not the DoC now, she’s the PoW!

She is still the Duchess of Cambridge. She is also the Duchess of Cornwall and the Princess of Wales. She has a few other titles as well, including Countess of Chester, Duchess of Rothesay, Countess of Carrick, Baroness Renfrew, and my personal favorite, Lady of the Isles.

Serenster · 02/12/2022 15:21

The British Fashion Council consider Roland Mouret a British fashion business…

MistletoeandBaileys · 02/12/2022 15:22

@antelopevalley I agree about the blouse. It ages her a good deal! She did have a black polo neck on the other day under one and looked so nice!

I know, but according to OP Mqueen is not British and SB was Born and raised in the UK, so I doubt Erdem would pass muster for them Wink

Luredbyapomegranate · 02/12/2022 15:25

I think she generally does - and should - wear a lot of Uk designers.

I’d imagine the reason she wore the channel is because it’s known she’s had it for ever and it’s an Earthshot event where she wants to be seen as environmentally aware above all else. Which seems fair enough.

So I think you are wrong on this occasion OP.

Luredbyapomegranate · 02/12/2022 15:27

Justasec321 · 02/12/2022 13:30

I am for real.

I think there is a case to be made that they promote British made design. We have some incredible talent in this country, and showcased by them would give a massive boost.

Sophie too by the way - that Erdem dress yesterday is an oppotunity missed. They represent us - why not promote our industries?

In private wear all the Chanel you want.

You may guess that I follow of fashion!

Erdem is UK based. So it counts

And while AM is owned internationally SB is one of the top couple of female Uk designers so I think it’s reasonable to wear her too - her work speaks to British creativity.

Fashion is a very international business.

SenecaFallsRedux · 02/12/2022 15:40

I think the Chanel jacket was an excellent choice; it's vintage so fits with the sustainability theme, and it's beautiful and fits her so well. My only quibble with how she has dressed on this US visit is her wearing high heels to a basketball game.

Samcro · 02/12/2022 16:11

was William wearing clothes by a british designer?

This is true Math but it is also hair splitting in a way. If she was not the PoW she would not be featured on any papers right?

So even though it is for Earthshot she is still there in a somewhat formal way. They are billed as British Royals in the papers.

@barskits and it got me thinking.... And when you were thinking, did you, at any point, wonder where Prince William gets his suits, ties, shirts and shoes from?

I do actually Barskits. It drives me bananas that they never give out that detail about any of the men in the famil. The sexisim is in the so naked. The women are used as shields in some sense - the break down of cost and what designer every.single.time.

But that is a different thread....
