DoC - why Chanel????

Foreign trips are such an incredible opportunity to showcase all things Brit.

She in particular can really elevate all of it.

Why wear bloody Chanel?

Eh, most designers will use imported fabrics, foreign factories, international finishings, etc. Very few designers can afford to do the full life cycle of the product in-house, as MaxMara does – owning the farms where the cows produce the leather right through to the dyes and tanning and production. Did you know legally you only have to finish the product, say by sewing on the buttons, to say “Made in the UK”.

Would love a list of truly British-made design, though – where not a thread leaves the country. And how affordable they are for the masses.

It's not really an 'official tour' representing the United Kingdom.

It's a 3 day visit to Boston for the Earthshot awards. A vintage jacket, which was privately paid for when Kate was a student, seems quite in theme.

I agree that royals should promote British fashion but Kate does this most of the time. This is just nitpicking.

Why so high handed with the "nit picking"?

It has come up with such frequency on this thread that I imagine you all in an office somewhere discussing the thread contents. Hmmm??

She wore Burberry, Mulberry and McQueen for Boston arrival and welcome.

I assume the Channel jacket is a nod to sustainability.

People are using the term nit picking because that is precisely what you are doing. It's no great conspiracy against you so you need not worry in that regard.

If Kate frequently wore Dior or Gucci to state events, you'd have a point. But she doesn't. She almost always wears British, although I agree that it would be nice to see her promote lesser known designers instead of Jenny Packham or Alexander McQueen.

Having a go at her for wearing a vintage jacket she's owned for decades at a minor event is practically the definition of nit picking.

OP completely ignoring this because it doesn't fit her narrative.

@Justasec321 you haven't answered the question re MM and yes you are nitpicking. Find a British made designer brand that Kate has not worn. you won't she wears them routinely, and interestingly so does her sister

I don't give two hoots about MM in this context.

She does not represent me or an excellent Brisith industry that could do with all the help it can get.

Does that satisfy you Pipin?

Find a British made designer brand that Kate has not worn - SERIOUSLY???

I think it's a savvy nod to the reason she's in Boston, the Earthshot prize. She needs to demonstrate her sustainability credentials especially to offset the sixtieth brand new long green coat . I'd say the reason the Chanel items were chosen is that they're immediately identifiable as a) vintage b) items she's worn before. Sure she could rewear a black poloneck or any other of the thousands of items in her closet, but they likely wouldn't have the same "oh she's rewarding vintage" impact at first glance. To give her credit, it's important to make rewears and vintage attractive.

PipinwasAuntieMabelsdog · 02/12/2022 14:43

@Justasec321 Of course you don't 'give a fig about MM' Hmm

PipinwasAuntieMabelsdog · 02/12/2022 14:44

Which Brit designers do you think the PoW should wear then?

wordler · 02/12/2022 14:46

I think the reason she tends to go back to McQueen and Jenny Packham a lot is they have started designing stuff with her shape and style particularly in mind so it’s things that really suit and appeal to her and a safe bet - especially the Packham evening wear - bit like the Queen ended up almost exclusively with Stuart Parvon and Angela Kelly designs.

A quick google - 40 secs.

madeingreatbritain.uk/made-in-great-britain/british-business-directory-2/british-made-handbags/

medium.com/factoryal/made-in-uk-clothes-12-brands-you-didnt-know-about-2fff6e0dfcdc

makeitbritish.co.uk/best-of-british/uk-clothing-brands/

They are there - and if our royals jumped in you would know them.

@Justasec321 Not many designers are British, based on your belief that McQueen is not sufficiently British...

Does anyone else think that @Justasec321 is a designer who sent something to Kate, and she returned it per protocol? Wink

DrMarciaFieldstone · 02/12/2022 14:47

Are you a little-known British designer, OP? Do you have a vested interest in your post?

PipinwasAuntieMabelsdog · 02/12/2022 14:48

@Justasec321 I know the sites you posted, non of that stuff is appropriate for Kate's formal duties...

@Justasec321 Of course you don't 'give a fig about MM' Hmm

I know you are dying for a scrap on the subject of MM so this is my last engagement with you about her.

My point on this thread is entirely to do with British fashion and the soft power the royal family could bring to that industry.

Nothing else.

Nice try but wrong.

Like 2 million other people I had a glance at the Daily Mail this morning (now for that you can lambast me ).

Andlike 2 million others I saw French design on a British Princess at a public event.

And it got me thinking....

Just to be clear....

I am not a fashion designer.

I have never been a fashion designer.

Nobody I know is a fashion designer.

I am not involved in fashion in any way.

I think, it’s possibly that someone in her team has enough awareness that there’s been rumblings about how much her wardrobe costs - the regularly wearing new expensive items when people in the UK are choosing between heating and eating. So they’ve done a rummage through what she’s already got to see what can be reworn with a new pair of trousers etc.

the whole trip isn’t proving great PR and terrible timing, but at least they’ve not triggered a debate about her clothing spending. (No one seems all that fussed about his dull suits)

Isn't Erdem a British designer?

antelopevalley · 02/12/2022 15:10

@LimeCheesecake I think no one cares about his suits because you can't tell one from the other in photos. I have no idea if he rewears a suit many times, or wears a new one on every public visit.

mathanxiety · 02/12/2022 15:11

I think the idea of the royal family showcasing anything good about the UK is a ship that has well and truly sailed at this point.

For reference, the lifestyle of Prince Andrew, and the recent well warranted resignation of a long serving lady in waiting to the Queen.

You might be interested to know that the ABC evening news headline when the W and K arrived in Boston was 'Prince and Princess of Wales touch down amid furore over Palace racist remarks'.

It will take more than a British-designed article of clothing to make a dent in that sort of poor public image. In actual fact, distancing themselves from all things British is probably the kindest thing they could do for the UK right now.

blacksax · 02/12/2022 15:12

She is visiting the Earthshot awards.

I can see the thread now...

"Royals pay lip service to climate change."
"Kate dressed from head to toe in brand new clothes from young designers."
"She has a huge wardrobe of clothes, so why isn't she wearing those instead of wasting taxpayers' money by buying new and contributing to the destruction of the planet?"

The woman literally cannot win.
