The American Tour... this isn't going to go well is it?

I think that in the first instance planning some sort of hearts and minds land grab over the Sussexes is foolish when Meghan is herself American and the Sussexes are based there. Why not leave well alone and throw a bells and whistles diplomatic smorgasbord for the president (or the next one, frankly, if Biden carks it) at the next opportunity. Or go to Canada, where you'd get loads of 10 years later photo compares and you are (or will be) actually the head of state there.
Also why Boston? If anything it's the anti UK monarchy state historically and Bostonians are not as (platonically) romantically taken than, say, (sweeping generalisation alert!) Midwesterners by the Royal Family.

I'm sure it's to flood the papers before Harry's "poor me" autobio comes out but surely there must be a premise on which they're going?

And now they have their 'touch down' moment marred by more racism accusations (quite rightly, what that lady in waiting said and how she behaved was absolutely appalling).

Difficult to see how they can bring this back round tbh.

What everyone else think?

Perhaps the Daily Mail isn't giving a balanced view? This coverage from Boston seems to tell a very different story.

I feel sorry for William and Kate, they are just trying to do their job and the proverbial hits the fan, it must be incredibly stressful.

Indeed . I don’t see why the media keep going on about LSH being William’s godmother ? Andrew is Harry’s godfather and that is never dragged up as a criticism of Harry !

queenofarles · 01/12/2022 14:26

It’s not, they both look so uncomfortable being there ,

What's there to feel sorry for? they chose to take themselves over to America to conquer it, no?

upfucked · 01/12/2022 15:32

I’m more interested in how they travelled to this climate change award - in a private jet?

We all know who Andrew is. Most people ( including myself) dont know anything about this woman.
Strange comment to make

They travelled by commercial plane and were chatting to fellow passengers .
Megan on the other hand travelled by private jet to her chat in Indianapolis.

They're presenting an award.
What about that is "conquering" a country?
Bit ott dear.

There will always legitimately be more critical looks at the people around the future King, than those around a Royal family member who is pretty irrelevant constitutionally. It is only the press and haters who keep the fixation going on Harry and Meghan.

Peasepuddingbloodycold · 01/12/2022 22:38

And the “shippers”.

Jazzandblues · 01/12/2022 23:29

Another failed tour for them. I wonder if they will try to cut it short. At this point there is no coming back for will and Kate. They are better off sticking with the UK. Given all the anti monarchy sentiment I am curious to see what happens next.

antelopevalley · 01/12/2022 23:33

Of course, they can come back from this. It is only a three-day visit, they won't cut it short. But they do need to do their homework in future and realise not everyone will welcome them, so choose places where people will welcome them. Boston was always a risky choice.

the coverage in Boston, where I live, is overwhelmingly benign and pleasant. It is like people in the UK are seeing a different tour. I am the furthest thing from a royalist - and don't care if these two succeed or fail - but the posts about this on MN have nothing to do with the reality of how these two people are being greeted and responded to in Boston. And no one here is even conscious of Harry and Meghan except in a very peripheral way (tbh same is true of William and Catherine - peripheral but willing to like is the vibe here)

I sometimes think the Daily Mail has single-handedly lowered the IQ of the average british person. Certainly the ability to critically review news sources.

I hope you say that when the Daily Mail is writing the thousandth article trashing Meghan.

Happyhappyday · 02/12/2022 03:01

Im in the US, no one cares. Not a single story about it. Lived in Boston for years, no one cares and no one was especially anti monarchy. Given most of our relatives immigrated/were enslaved way after the revolutionary war… no one cares. Sorry Britain!

No, they traveled commercial. I saw a shot of the two of them and it was both of them on a plane as though they were looking for their seats and laughing. ‘First class fellow travellers were delighted’ was the subheading (or similar). It was a wise move, especially given they were there to bring attention to environment -which is great.

I read that a person travelling first class pumps out 4x more crap into our atmosphere than a person travelling economy. If true, first class air travel is still not a good look. It’s got to the point, with the climate crisis, that air travel is not really a good look for anyone, anymore. Air travel has to get greener.

fallfallfall · 02/12/2022 05:32

Pleasant coverage in Canada as well.

Peasepuddingbloodycold · 02/12/2022 06:49

It reads a bit like Twitter in here Confused

nettie434 · 02/12/2022 09:26

Why? They chose to go to a place yet again without doing much research

I didn't know this but it was explained upthread that they are in Boston for the award ceremony for the Earthshot Prize because it's taking place in partnership with the John F Kennedy Foundation, which is based in Boston. I hadn't realised that the Earthshot Foundation is now an independent foundation governed by other international philanthropic organisations rather than the Prince of Wales so I don't think William and Kate had much choice about the location.

Netflix and Spotify have invested significant sums in Harry and Meghan. They want as much money as possible from the product. I've no idea how much their publicity was timed to fit in with William and Kate's visit but they (Netflix, the publishers of Harry's autobiography etc) must have been delighted with the timing of the 'where are you really from' remarks.

antelopevalley · 02/12/2022 11:17

@nettie434 From what you say it sounds then like William does not really have anything to do with Earthshot except appear at a few events? Is that right?
