Awful story just broken on twitter about horrendous racist questioning from Lady Hussey to Ngozi Fulani from Sister Space at yesterdays VAWG event.

Lady Hussey has resigned.

The issue here is the racism, not whether or not some sealion wants it categorised differently.

They are displaying the psychology of a racist. There are loads of them here. Now, it may be unconscious, in which case the person should use this as a learning moment, as uncomfortable as it is to them.

Others will just continue being racists, consciously because they are racists.

Pallisers · 01/12/2022 14:53

MaulPerton · 01/12/2022 09:57

Completely opposite. The oxygen we breathe can be empirically observed. Anything unconscious, by definition, can't be. The concept of unconscious bias has been popularised for political reason but is, in fact, on par with religion, homeopathy, astrology, and other non-empirical knowledge about the world.

There is in fact a whole area of scientific study on implicit bias, led by a couple of Harvard professors. One of them spoke at my kids' school and led a light-hearted test with the audience. It was eye-opening.

@PatientZorro

SH wasn't an employee.

Her post was an honorary and ancient role reserved for ladies of good breeding.

Blossomtoes · 01/12/2022 15:11

Wtf is sealioning?

Never heard of that before but it's perfect!
And yes, not falling into the trap of engaging is definitely best.

I have repeatedly pointed out how outrageous it is in 2022 that royals pick and chose which laws they'd like to be exempt from

Well how interesting that royals took pains to be exempt fromthe Equality Act of 2010

'The most controversial exemptions ban the Queen’s employees from pursuing sexual and racial discrimination complaints. Even the most modern piece of anti-discrimination law, the Equality Act 2010, is designed not to protect those employed by the Queen.'

So not just bad practice from the 60s and 70s as royalists here have tried to pretend

Racists through and through

@Novella4 Thats so bad totally changed my opinion of them after all this. Charles can save it if he opts in and boots out every single racist.

Agreed it is awful. If they operated properly, there would be no reason to be exempt from the Equality Laws.

TooBigForMyBoots · 01/12/2022 18:33

On a side note, I love the fact she wanted exemption from the law prohibiting private citizens from setting off nuclear explosions. That is an impressive, queenly power.😆😆😆

I think it's ok to question what is the meaning of certain, specified non-empirical concepts, and this for the reason that we find that constructs are often intrinsically linked to the social era in which they were coined, and therefore, they don't translate either back into history, or forward into more enlightened times, as living conditions subtly change.

So, it doesn't work to interpret Lady Macbeth as a feminist, nor Elizabeth Bennet. Feminism is a product of certain conditions and times.

Maybe unconscious bias could become less of a thing as history marches on, and/or, independently or in tandem, people feel they are cognaisci enough to start constructing their own interpretations.

Novella4 · 01/12/2022 20:13

Something you never hear about is that the royals also have clauses added to laws that they wish to exclude themselves from.

For the equality act 2010 a clause was added so that if the royals did break the law on racism for example not only would they not be prosecuted because it doesn't apply to them , they wouldn't even be considered to have been acting illegally . All perfectly fine for the royals to act as they please - it's still the bloody 16th century here !

Explains a lot .

All this ' sorrow ' and 'reflection' and 'shock' each time the royals are involved in another racist incident yet behind the scenes it's all meticulously planned out .

How anyone can support this rotten corrupt Mafia is beyond me

Diverseopinions · 01/12/2022 20:16

She speaks really, really well, Ngozi Fulani. What she said about ageism is valid. Not all old people are tactless and superior, as she implies. The Palace should invite her to help shape their equality work.

Totally agree, such informative posts, I'm enjoying them

The Palace make another gaffe, they say they have 'reached out' to Ngozi yet she categorically states in interview no one from the Palace has tried to reach either her or her charity.
And she would really welcome a discussion looking forward.
I can only presume they are in a total blind panic. Why day they have if they haven't? I'm hoping it's just crossed wires somewhere although it's pretty easy to contact the Head of a Charity

Well...after that faux pas, why wasn't she retired off?

Just weird they hang onto these people for decades. Fine the Queen liked her around but putting her amongst the public and important visiting dignitaries at important events is bonkers

Just to add, the teaching staff used to laugh and thought it was okay. Those men/women are probably now in their 70s or 80s or dead. That makes a lot of people in this country racist as all members of my wider family experienced the same. Does everyone on mumsnet think all of these racists have disappeared somehow? No, they are still alive and kicking and as racist as can be.

I am sorry you experienced this Loudhousefun. It must have been extremely hurtful. And I know it still occurs today. The evidence of it on mn alone, has been pretty overwhelming. Especially in the last 24 hours or so.

Or by a thoroughly researched widely used test that is used to inform advertising decisions.

IAT

do you dare take the test @MaulPerton ? I’d be fascinated by your results. My own results were a real eye opener.

No, thanks. The unconscious cannot be observed empirically, but you go ahead, if you are happy to have someone else tell you something about your unconscious. It's all a bit too Freudian for me, where women were carted off to institutions on the basis of their unconscious. I'll give this one a miss.

I enjoyed this from the Times.

As charming as President Bush could be, he wasn’t a product of the British aristocracy so probably not even on Lady Hussey’s radar. I think the endogamy of a certain type of aristocrat can’t be overstated, they only venture into the outside world when they absolutely need to, à la lady Glenconner who is trading on her memories because her late husband disinherited her in favour of his butler.
