Awful story just broken on twitter about horrendous racist questioning from Lady Hussey to Ngozi Fulani from Sister Space at yesterdays VAWG event.

Lady Hussey has resigned.

Absolutely.

Only this hysteria on Mumsnet .

Why should we stay silent on such matters

And this is Ngozi’s problem?

I’m white and I haven’t experienced racism therefore it doesn’t exist 🙄

Willmafrockfit · 30/11/2022 18:35

the lady could have asked the question differently
the charity worker could have told her where her family originated from

imo

I think what this whole awful incident has highlighted is how the Royal Family are over looking some really serious issues in the name of keeping in with the ones they deem most loyal!

It’s not just a reminder on inclusivity and diversity they need. With all the recent issues coming out it’s a completely new set of households they need.

I mean the Hussey was in her role for 60 years!! A hell of a lot has changed since then.

I don’t envy Prince William. He is inheriting an institution that is in dire need of reform. I know he is an advisor to King Charles but how much is Charles actually taking on board? How in control are the royal household of the actual Royal Family.

I have my own feelings on H&M. I definitely think there were some lies told but I also believe 100% that Harry has wanted out for a long time and I do think he has used Meghan as a shield through the transition.

No matter what Harry says or does, it always gets pinned back on Meghan which isn’t fair.

I also think Harry and William keep in closer contact than is let on. (Might be wishful thinking there)

I don't get this hatred. I am a white woman from the UK and have been asked questions like this when in a country where I look or sound different to most of the population (or even in different parts of the UK). Same for my husband, also white, from the UK. We did not scream racism and go to the press, but understood it as making conversation or genuine interest.
The supposed racist comments about Prince Harry's child is another thing I don't get. Surely most families in the world, when seeing two people with different colouring/races are due to have a child, will speculate about who the child will take after?

Do you have ANY idea just how hard of thinking you sound? I feel embarrassed for you.

Bestcatmum · 30/11/2022 18:35

There is zero excuse for ignorance like this - she worked for the queen long enough to know you do not pursue this line of questioning in polite society. It's just pig ignorance. I don't care how old she is.
I won't tolerate this at work.
Someone in their 80's went on and on like this to one of my nhs students and I said very firmly you can either drop this line of questioning or leave.
They dropped it and left in a huff.

BeginningToLookALotLike · 30/11/2022 18:35

The lady could have asked her about her charity.

That was what the event was about, after all.

Why does Kent need a duchess AND a princess?

They are married to the Kent brothers. Prince Michael of Kent is the younger brother of The Duke of Kent and Princess Alexandra. Their father, Prince George, was the fourth son of George V and the brother of George VI, The Queen's father.

The elder brother inherited the Kent dukedom from their father upon his death.

They are both princes, as they are the grandsons of a monarch. Their wives acquire titles according to status.

i hope she is well cared for and not too harmed by the press intrusion.

But why. Would she ask anyone else that question why when you first meet someone would you ask where their family come from?!

Novella4 · 30/11/2022 18:36

@Willmafrockfit
Have you read the transcript ??

She did answer .

But her answer wasn't acceptable so she was repeatedly questioned
It's called 'othering '

I'm white and thus have no experience of being on the receiving end of racism. I once called someone out at work for a serious mistake, and the retort was that I "had it in " for the person because of the colour of their skin. I replied that I don't care if their skin is black, white or green, it was a stupid mistake and we don't want any repeat thanks. Am I a racist? Serious question. Because, whilst Lady H's questioning seems intrusive and rude, and certainly touching Ngozi was offensive, why was her interest in her background racist? Ngozi was dressed in what I would say was an exotic African way, and the pictures I've seen show other ladies dressed rather more sedately; I'd have been interested in her background too.

I presume you’re referring to Ngozi?

RulaCabula · 30/11/2022 18:41

Whats the odds Kate / William will be seen hugging a Black child to prove they're not racist?

I can't believe people are making excuses for SH's racism just because she's so close to the RF and it reflects badly on them.

We still have so far to go to eradicate racism.

You sound racist. Your "a person once accused me of racism when I wasn't being racist" and apologist post make you sound like one.

KimMumsnet · 30/11/2022 18:45

Good evening, all. We've already posted on this thread to appeal for civil posting but unfortunately there are now far too many posts on here breaking our Talk Guidelines, whether for being personal attacks or denying others' experiences of racism. We'll be removing this thread in a moment,.

F4chrissakes · 30/11/2022 18:48

How is my post apologist, I'm not apologising for anyone? I was brought up in a racist era - I saw the signs -"Rooms to let, no blacks, no Irish" and i am white, but how does that make me a racist?

Then say that's a nice outfit. And see where the conversation goes.

What about in your own country where you were born and where you grew up and went to school and where you work, though?

Would you still feel fine about someone insinuating that you don't belong here because of your skin colour if you were in your home town?

Because that's the scenario that applies here.

starfro · 30/11/2022 18:49

Most 80-year-olds say things that are considered non-PC and unacceptable in modern terms. Obviously younger members of the RF wouldn't have a conversation like this.

SchrodingersFat · 30/11/2022 18:49

I like talking about my heritage and ancestry. Even did one of those DNA tests.

I think an awful lot of posters on this thread are not (and don't want to be) clear on the difference between taking a genuine interest in getting to know a fellow human being and the line of questioning that Ngozi was put under.

I'm out. God, I'm tired.

ClaudineClare · 30/11/2022 18:54

It is a pity to remove this thread as it shows the UK has a long way to go still in tacling racism. I think MNHQ should let it stand.
