Awful story just broken on twitter about horrendous racist questioning from Lady Hussey to Ngozi Fulani from Sister Space at yesterdays VAWG event.

Lady Hussey has resigned.

Hmm, some people of colour on Twitter have interesting different opinions and offer insight into the background of this. Worth considering I think.

twitter.com/kemiowonibi/status/1597981994901987329?s=46&t=jrVSbpWqtMo7gAMQWWMHHA

‘Hmm’, indeed.

POC are not monolithic. Black people are not monolithic. Africans and Black Brits aren’t even particularly culturally aligned. White people are acknowledged as having a range of opinions, but for some reason non-White people are assumed to be of one mind. Why is this?

I could find half a dozen Twitter threads by and featuring POC with differing opinions on every conceivable angle of this. I could also find threads by and featuring white peoples on with differing opinions every conceivable angle of this. So what?

Looking from the outside - why should people have to state their race in order to say what their opinion is about something? The point of equality is that race shouldn't matter (even though we know that sadly often it still does!).
Have these posters been asked to "disclose" their race and refused? Even if they did comply, what would be the point? They could just make it up.
We need to be adults and treat each comment and opinion on it's own merit - even if we disagree - regardless of what colour, religion or race the poster might be. Demanding that people declare their ethnicity or whatever only serves to perpetuate stereotypes, divisions and conflict.

No, no one should be asked to disclose their race and I haven't asked anyone to.

But they are being coy about their own race (vague references to 'minority religious group', 'Asian relative' etc, but don't seem to understand the hypocrisy in expecting Ms Fulani to happily share her own heritage to appease casual, relentless curiousity.

FlorettaB · 30/11/2022 17:45

’I really can't imagine disbelieving someone when they had already told me where they were from’

I know. The arrogance of it!

'Ms Fulani tweeted: 'Our charity supports black women DV survivors. I can't stay silent about this. I admire Meghan for speaking out. According to clear definition, it seems Meghan is a survivor of DV from her in-laws.'

As NF previously alledegy said this one can't help wondering if there was an agenda here. Also, what an appalling false equivalence. Domestic violence is not falling out with the inlaws.

Emotional abuse, controlling behaviour and racism are all DV. Meghan has reported that she was suicidal due to their treatment of her. That, under U.K. legislation, would qualify her for DV support.

So, you don’t know what you’re talking about.

Aquablue21 · 30/11/2022 17:47

What gives you the right to sit as judge and jury? @Squeezita Got any opinions of your own? Or just happy to shout ‘wrong’, ‘racist’.

It’s women like you and @RishisProudMum that make it so hard for aspiring women. Men think all women and stupid and emotional because of the comments women like you make. So tired of the hysteria and stone throwing. Boring and ignorant.

tillyandmilly · 30/11/2022 17:48

Give her a break ! She is an 83 year old - ! Old school - please don’t make a mountain out of a molehill - this is all getting petty and ridiculous……yes she should not have asked this lady where she was from - as she had already said Hackney - but this has been blown out if all proportion - the world has gone mad!

And more minimising of racism. She didn't just ask 'where she was from', here is the relentless hounding of Ms Fulani, by a woman who is a senior palace aide to a Queen:

Lady SH: Where are you from?
Me: Sistah Space.
SH: No, where do you come from?
Me: We’re based in Hackney.
SH: No, what part of Africa are YOU from?
Me: I don’t know, they didn’t leave any records.
SH: Well, you must know where you’re from, I spent time in France. Where are you from?
Me: Here, UK
SH: NO, but what Nationality are you?
Me: I am born here and am British.
SH: No, but where do you really come from, where do your people come from?
Me: ‘My people’, lady, what is this?
SH: Oh I can see I am going to have a challenge getting you to say where you’re from. When did you first come here?
Me: Lady! I am a British national, my parents came here in the 50s when …
SH: Oh, I knew we’d get there in the end, you’re Caribbean!
Me: No Lady, I am of African heritage, Caribbean descent and British nationality.

Your attempt to drop the mic are 😄considering that I made that point myself and you are telling me about a member of my own family whose identity is tied up with my own. I am pretty well informed about both sides of the debate and not afraid to be unpopular. Thanks though

@Croque So you are saying that your cousins or members of your extended family were invited to a charity event and instead of being asked about their charity work, they’re constantly asked about where they are from, where they’re really from is ok?

LookingAtYou · 30/11/2022 17:51

'Emotional abuse, controlling behaviour and racism are all DV.'

I disagree. Domestic abuse includes emotional abuse, control and coercion. Domestic violence surely incudes violence. To equate what MM experienced with domestic violence does a disservice to the victims her charity supports. She clearly isn't a fan of the RF, the hosts really should have been better prepared.

GreensForMe · 30/11/2022 17:52

I absolutely cringed earlier on when I read about how Lady Susan Hussey conducted this conversation. She was an absolute bulldozer. She had the bit between her teeth and she wasn't going to let go!

I am convinced Susan has pissed off many people in her role and abused her position as lady in waiting over the years. You don't just behave the way she did as a one off. Luckily she didn't get away with it this time and has left in disgrace. As they say, what goes around, comes around. She is still our future Monarch's godmother, I wonder how the royal family will handle this embarrassing little issue.

Just to be clear, what ‘ignorant garbage’ am I ‘spewing’? Looking for facts, rather than your opinions.

Prefer if you’d keep it civil, rather than resorting to insults. Appreciate that might be difficult for you, if you don’t have any facts.

I have stated, quite clearly, the points which you’ve made that are ignorant garbage. And everything I’ve said has been factual.

The person spewing insults here is you. ‘Word than Lady Hussey’ and ‘you’re the one that’s racist’ spring to mind. If you’d prefer to keep things civil, rather than resorting to insults, perhaps you should address what’s said to you.

Additionally, if you wish to respond to people type an ‘@‘ followed by their user name. If you wish to respond to specific comments, tap the three dots to the bottom right of said comments and hit ‘quote’. I understand why you’d want to distance yourself from the things you’ve said, however if I have to dig back to see what was last said, I will no longer be responding to you.

TheGander · 30/11/2022 17:52

I think class has a lot to do with this as well as race. When you’ve never really had to go for a job interview, attend unconscious bias training, never had to watch what you say for fear of losing your job, are surrounded by people of the same background then you can just bypass a lot of social change and carry on living as this was still the 1950s. Ideally I suspect much of the RF would like this too but various events have shown them they can’t.

You are looking for fights to devalue their posts. I only had to look at the most recent one you quoted to see that the poster agrees that what happened was wrong "I'm entitled to express my feeling of unease about how this was handled, while also agreeing on the seriousness of the incident and the resignation." Just not the sort of great long post you favour using the words you think they should.
I also don't see anything "coy" about suggesting that you're making assumptions about a poster's skin colour. It's a statement that doesn't require the poster to also add that they are black/white or yellow. Again, nobody should have to declare their race or colour in order for their views to be heard.
You're really getting very "righteous" and rude about this Squeezita and should maybe consider that being abusive is never appropriate or clever. I'd step away from the screen for a while if I were you. That's what I'm going to do now.

No word on the matter from the regular MN royal watchers. Because of course the Royal households are surely not racist. That suggestion was just another one of MM’s lies, was it not? This report goes some way in discrediting that narrative so let’s keep quiet and hope nobody notices.
I’m delighted H&M voluntarily removed themselves from such a toxic and archaic culture. Those that believe that they are desperate to return and be accepted are delusional.

Very well observed!

Just last week, Angela Levin was commenting on how" white "Meghan's skin looked in a picture. I guess the memo that people's skins change according to the weather, and yes, that includes us black people too, missed her.

It is laughable that people actually disbelieve Meghan and Harry when they said there were comments about Archie's skin, especially when you consider the bubble in which much of the Royal Family and their courtiers live.

It still astonishes me that the Royal Household is exempt from race discrimination laws.

On another note, Lady Susan Hussey is William's godmother as many have noted. His other godparent is Laurens van der Post.

The Prince of Wales, as he then was, certainly knew how to pick them!!

I was pleased to see though, that even the Daily Mail acknowledges what a shitfest this is, and how damaging it is, particularly given that Hussey is William's godmother, and she was recently trumpeted as one of the Queen's new companions. .

The resignation is humiliating for Camilla and a disaster for Lady Hussey's godson Prince William, who lands in the US today with the Princess of Wales for a three-day tour now at risk of being overshadowed by the race row.

FlorettaB · 30/11/2022 17:57

’I am convinced Susan has pissed off many people in her role and abused her position as lady in waiting over the years.’

She comes across as a rude, arrogant bully. In this case she’s also being racist. If this is how she behaved in public in front of guests at a reception I can’t imagine how awful she must be to deal with on a one-to-one basis.

@RishisProudMum, apologies I was using reply rather than quote.

I don’t need to distance myself from anything that I’ve said. I’m not racist and I think today’s news should have been focused on the the gender based violence that too many women and girls are suffering. That’s all.

PipinwasAuntieMabelsdog · 30/11/2022 17:57

I thought very posh people use the term 'people' for family? I went to a uni popular with royals and poshos and was asked 'are those your people over there?' at graduation. My very working class, Mancunian and obviously Jewish parents were an anomaly to be fair! The whole exchange is inappropriate and needs to be dealt with, but I don't think the person necessarily meant 'your people' as in 'you people' IYSWIM.
