Awful story just broken on twitter about horrendous racist questioning from Lady Hussey to Ngozi Fulani from Sister Space at yesterdays VAWG event.

Lady Hussey has resigned.

I feel sorry for Lady Susan - I mean, headline news, elderly lady opens her mouth and puts her foot right in it

Put her foot in it? Is that a euphemism for was racist? Do you really think she would have interrogated a white British person in that way and fiddled with their hair?

"Oh silly me, I've accidentally made a black woman feel totally degraded! I'm always putting my foot in it! No bother, I'm rich and white so people will pity me )"

If this is the kind of attitude Meghan Markle encountered in that household, no wonder she scarpered. Who wouldn't?

The problem most people have with MM is that she scarpered after bagging the mansion and the couture wardrobe. Most people would have left it all behind as RF/Spencer wealth originates from the same source.

Maybe Croque, she scarpered after trying to make it work rather than
after bagging the mansion and the couture wardrobe.

SoupDragon · 30/11/2022 16:49

Are you denying that being rude/offensive/racist is a problem unrelated to age?

Bullshit. Do you actually know any elderly people? You do realise they are not all the same? I'm sure many elderly people of all nationalities and races lose their filter somewhat as they get older. I know as I have aged my tolerance to crap has reduced! As I said upthread, it this lady has a history of such inappropriate questioning, then it should have been dealt with long ago, and there will have been other victims, who will now feel empowered to speak out.

The late Queen really valued and promoted the Commonwealth, and met many representatives during her reign. I'm sure she often had Lady S by her side. I doubt in her position the Queen could/would have surrounded herself by racists.

Ah listen argue about it all you want, I'm out. If you think it's fine to generalise and castigate the whole RF on the basis of one person who isn't a member behaving arrogantly and rudely at one reception on one day - and yes, with her experience, she should have known better - then maybe you ought to take a good hard look at yourself.

I'm often asked where I am from (accent!) and I simply respond, "I live in X but I am originally from Y" and that explains it, no violation involved.

My family member who is at London University and has a non-British surname was asked this exact question all the time by British white students who were passionately anti-racist. She was offended at first but soon established that none of these types wanted to be classed as white British. They would have DNA tests just to legitimately give themselves the right to emphasise the 0.00005% non British ancestry as being 'where they were really from'. I wonder if Lady S was using it as a lead in to a conversation to empahsise similar things.

@Croque So that’s why the Palace apologised and said person resigned etc.? Instead of trying to do mental gymnastics to excuse racial behaviour, it’s ok to call it for what it is. I just found out about the racial incident, clicked on the link to the BBC article above and was able to Google a transcript of the conversation. And yet, somehow excuses are being made just because this person is old or from a different generation? She was still at a charity event and interrogated a person with eyewitnesses so I highly doubt it’s the same as what you’re trying to say.

Rainingnow · 30/11/2022 17:00

I was trying to find the words to say this, you've summed my feelings up perfectly. There were better ways to handle the incident.

If you bothered to read, Ms Fulani only posted on twitter and called for kindness, and the story has been rapidly picked up. She didn't "dominate the headlines" by choice but of course as she's black you're all instantly on her case for DARING to speak out. She should just keep her head down and take it, right??

Aquablue21 · 30/11/2022 16:53

Lady Susan was extremely rude. Her questions were completely inappropriate.

But Ngozi has made this event all about her. The event was about gender-based violence. Women and girls are being raped and murdered in the uk and worldwide, in domestic and conflict situations. This was the important thing to focus on. There are stupid people everywhere, everyday. Call them out, but don’t dominate the headlines and detract from the key message of the event.

For the record, I’m an immigrant to the UK too, but my daughter is also African heritage, Caribbean descent and British born.

It was entirely appropriate for her to call this out. She will know from her work that many of the women she champions and defends will have had to put up with this sort of racist nonsense many times, and not be able to speak out because they are vulnerable. She's in a good position to speak out, and so she did.

Crikeyalmighty · 30/11/2022 17:03

I remember my FIL talking about his very polite, Telegraph reading ,eternal bachelor brother who is 85 - and excusing some of his hideous views by saying 'well he grew up with the idea that Britain was invincible- we were the crème de la creme' - no wonder we got Brexit and totally out of touch people like Lady Hussey in roles they are no longer suited to in a modern world. I'm personally all for a more modern European style monarchy if we have one at all.

Queen Elizabeth gave Harry Frogmore Cottage as a wedding gift.

Are you saying if your grandmother gave you a multi million pound property, you would have turned it down?

Yeah right. Your jealousy is showing.

ClaudineClare · 30/11/2022 17:03

Oh and if LH has lost her filter, why was she in a job where tact and diplomacy is important?

The truth is, LH is not some sort of Palace anomaly. If she was, she wouldn't have behaved in such a racist way.

Justasec321 · 30/11/2022 17:01

Actually, it is well documented that she tried, she couldn't make it work, she scarpered, they moved into to the mansion and then she spoke out.

She would have had more integrity if she had found financial freedom as they would still have lived somewhere decent and dressed well.

Aquablue21 · 30/11/2022 17:04

I’m mixed race too. But not African or Caribbean.

The bigger picture was the women that are suffering from gender-based violence. But the press isn’t talking about that now.

ClaudineClare · 30/11/2022 17:04

Oh and here comes the Meghan bashing to derail the thread. We see you. We know what you are.

They were tallking about it yesterday, when the event happened. This also happened. But of course a rich white woman's philanthropy should completely block out the lived experience of a black woman ALSO HELPING TOWARDS THE SAME AIMS (in case this wasn't obvious). The mental gymnastics of racists are so funny.

The mansion in Montecito, you div. Bought from Spencer money or are you going to claim M is paying for it every month?

Wtf?? "She would have had more integrity if she had found financial freedom as they would still have lived somewhere decent and dressed well"? Which century did you crawl out from? Why do YOU need to approve what is "decent" and "well"? Are you just mad Harry didn't fall in love wirh you lmao

She tweeted once about a racist incident. That’s ‘making the event about her’? Should she have kept silent about it, then?

The event was about gender-based violence. Women and girls are being raped and murdered in the uk and worldwide, in domestic and conflict situations. This was the important thing to focus on.

I suggest you look up Ngozi’s work re Violence Against Women and Girls in some extremely vulnerable communities. Then come back and tell us what you’ve done about the issue that’s on par.

There are stupid people everywhere, everyday. Call them out, but don’t dominate the headlines and detract from the key message of the event.

You think Ngozi gets to decide the headlines and who/what dominates them?

For the record, I’m an immigrant to the UK too, but my daughter is also African heritage, Caribbean descent and British born.

So, that makes the nonsense you just spewed acceptable. You have a Black daughter, so you get to tell Black women not to speak up about racism and that doing so detracts from the causes they are working towards.

RishisProudMum · 30/11/2022 16:57

Why is that POC’s problem, though? Are we meant to tolerate casual racism because Great Aunty Maude has ‘completely lost her filter’?

I think not.

I agree with you @RishisProudMum and I also think this does an incredibly disservice to elderly people.

My grandfather was of this generation. I never once heard him browbeat anyone about their racial origins, like a dog with a bone that won't let go, or make a disparaging comment to or about anyone on the basis of their race. It wasn't okay in his generation, despite the many excuses made suggesting that it was - it isn't okay now, and an entire generation who grew up in those years are not card-carrying racists.

Just looking at the woman's comments, there's clearly an implicit assumption that those origins were something Ngozi should apparently apologize for or be ashamed of. Ngozi deflected her politely numerous times yet she still refused to drop it.

Her behaviour was inexcusable. As for this:

I think people need to remember as well - this is an elderly lady, 83, brought up in a very different culture. Doesn't make her racist??

I'm begging to differ. Yes it does.

Do not worry. I see it a lot these days and it is irrelevant to this thread anyway.

Loudhousefun · 30/11/2022 17:08

I cannot believe William had a spokesperson make an announcement. He’s the one who told a reporter that the royal family is not racist and when it turns out they are intact racist he won’t speak on the subject himself. He should hang his head in shame.

billy1966 · 30/11/2022 17:09

Appallingly rude.

Her age is a complete red herring.

She has had a life of privilege with every opportunity to know and do better.

Her persistence in her line of questioning is appallingly rude and disrespectful.

She sounds like a nasty arrogant bully taking that tone with anyone.

83 years old has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with it and is an insult to anyone in their 80's who has an ounce of cop on and self respect.

Her behaviour reeks of disrespect and superiority and that she should be repping BP is simply dreadful.

How embarrassing for both Charles and William.

How dare she think she has the right to treat the occasion as an opportunity to interrogate this or any person in such a rude manner.

An appalling lack of manners.

They will have known her well in BP.

I have zero interest in the MM/PH tale of woe, but if this is the character and calibre of people assigned to her integration, it is hard not to imagine that some offence might have been caused.

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 30/11/2022 17:09

If you think it's fine to generalise and castigate the whole RF on the basis of one person who isn't a member behaving arrogantly and rudely at one reception on one day.

Wasn't this the late queen's closest confidante for around 60 years?

Such as? Please tell us these ways. Educate Black people on how they can respond to racism in a manner you find tasteful and discreet.
