Awful story just broken on twitter about horrendous racist questioning from Lady Hussey to Ngozi Fulani from Sister Space at yesterdays VAWG event.

Lady Hussey has resigned.

Lady H must be about 300. Her DH was the one the BBC slid the Diana Panorama con under when he was DG.

The lady at the charity was dead right to point it out. LH is so old and doddery no one could think any offence was intended, which unfortunately makes it worse if you’re on the receiving end. A lot more people could have been.

Hope LH is put out to grass pronto
and the charity CEO gets an MBE for her work.

@Supersimkin2 What Panorama con? Also, whether any offense was intended or not, Ms. Hussey was being racially offensive. I’m also surprised she was allowed to even be at such an event. It’s clearly not the first time offensive remarks were made and I certainly doubt it will be the last.

Sixsmith · 30/11/2022 16:28

Aka why are you brown?

Cringe!

PeekAtYou · 30/11/2022 16:29

Why didn't she just say 'I'm British but my parents came here in the 50s' and state the country in the first place . What is racist about asking about people's heritage?
Most people don't want to have to give their life story to a random that they'll never meet again. British is a quick way for her to be polite with an answer.
Were white people people asked where they were from? Did she want to know if they were from Newport or Newcastle or was it enough that they were white and spoke with an English accent ?

Lady Hussey is 83! She''s from a very privileged white background. She's from a generation when race was thought of very differently to how it is now. I know many people of that generation who do not understand how things have changed and how modern etiquette around race is very different.

What she said was wrong, but it's a reflection her own experiences of living in a majority white environment. Ngoni Fulani knew what Lady Hussey meant and was deliberately answering in an ambiguous and passively aggressive way.

The palace have responded appropriately to her complaints so what more can they do?

Ngoni Fulani was passive aggressive? You are so clueless.

What more can they do?

Get rid of all aids and staff, paid or unpaid, who refuse to abide by the palace's D&I ethos, train all remaining staff in unconscious bias, recruit from a much broader pool and run a tight ship.

This is a pivotal moment for the palace and the exact time where the British Royal family enters a new era. Let's see what this will look like. A lot will hinge on how successful Charles is in reinventing the royal household.

Peasepuddingbloodycold · 30/11/2022 16:31

For me, the most surprising aspects of this is how quickly the palace have responded!

Now imagine that the Asian parent is invited to a special event to celebrate all they have done for the local community, but is greeted by a total stranger who is only interested in asking them questions about their heritage based on their colouring.

Not so enjoyable now is it?

Your attempt to drop the mic are 😄considering that I made that point myself and you are telling me about a member of my own family whose identity is tied up with my own. I am pretty well informed about both sides of the debate and not afraid to be unpopular. Thanks though

Justasec321 · 30/11/2022 16:13

Exactly right Hattie.

It was not intended to be offensive.

That is the problem, it was....instinct.

And yet it was offensive.

StarbucksSmarterSister · 30/11/2022 16:33

FFS some people on here.

Stop making excuses for her.

Why is asking about people's heritage racist? NF had stated she was British, fine, SH wasn't saying 'no no you can't be', she was asking where her family had originated.

Anyway she has resigned as it does seem like she was hectoring her if the transcript is accurate and good the Palace has shown zero tolerance to ambiguous language.

That is exactly what she was doing. She was answered but the answer wasn't good enough for Hussey, so she kept challenging the answer to get a different one. Because as a black woman she couldn't possible be British. I mean for pity's sake what was the mind numbingly thick comment about France for?

She's from a generation when race was thought of very differently to how it is now. I know many people of that generation who do not understand how things have changed and how modern etiquette around race is very different.

So, interrogating someone about their antecedents when they clearly don’t want to have the conversation and accusing them of being ‘difficult’ when they don’t do what one wants is excused if you grew up in a time when the ‘etiquette’ around race involved treating Black people like second class citizens?

Ngoni Fulani knew what Lady Hussey meant and was deliberately answering in an ambiguous and passively aggressive way.

So, it’s Ngozi‘s (please at least spell her name correctly) responsibility to know what this stupid woman meant and answer in the manner she wanted? Why? Why was Lady S entitled to this information, in your opinion? And why is it not the responsibility of the courtier to not be a rude twat?

The palace have responded appropriately to her complaints so what more can they do?

I am yet to see anyone request that they do anything additional. Where have you seen this?

MsBucket · 30/11/2022 16:33

MrsFinkelstein · 30/11/2022 15:14

It was a horrific thing to have said, utterly stupid and yes, racist.
I'm glad the Palace are reaching out, and excellent that she will no longer be a part of the Royal Household.
That's it.
I fail to see the need to make this into more than it is.

@MrsFinkelstein I’m glad that it is. At the very least, it might prove to be educational for those who think it’s ok and badger POC with questions about their heritage.

According to the BBC article linked above, Ms Fulani was at a charity event where she was questioned by William’s godmother so she is clearly is of some significance to the royals so of course more has been made of this especially if there are accusations of the royal family of being racist.

Did you even read the transcript. She answered many, many MANY times. Only a racist would find a reason to blame the victim here

Ok...

Same old shit, comparing racism against black people with you as a white person being asked about you glasses by your aunt.

Buy a clue and fuck your mitigation.

You are a total idiot.

I gave the example of my aunt, because as I said, I could imagine her making such a remark but not meaning anything by it.

How racist you are, assuming that I am white???

xJ0y · 30/11/2022 16:35

I agree with you @fallfallfall it was an event to recognise WA charities and she said she felt violated by being asked where she was from. I know that lady SH shouldn't have asked, or even wondered. The woman was English and im sure her accent reflected that, but does Ngozi Fulani truly feel "violated" by being asked where she's from.

OKild09 · 30/11/2022 16:35

' Very much not a racist family '

They only employ them.

Except these are not employees in the normal way - courtiers are often on expenses and personal close friends of the Royals.

So the "we are very much not racists" Royals surrounding themselves with racist cronies. Now what kind of people overlook or ignore racism in their closest circle, the people in particular positions of trust with them, who have to deal with the public?

Croque · 30/11/2022 16:36

I set my watch by it.

FlorettaB · 30/11/2022 16:36

Can we stop being so ageist. I have aunties that age who would never be:

  1. so racist
  2. so rude
  3. so arrogant.
lightisnotwhite · 30/11/2022 16:37

If someone asks me where I'm from and I say Essex, I don't add that my parents are actually from SE London.
But if you had a Scottish name and accent and you said Essex people might question you further?

I get it. People have always asked where I am from/ where were my family from/ where do I get my looks from.
It was embarrassing. I felt in was othering because of the judgements whenI said India.. Now I don’t get embarrassed because the stereotyping has changed. People also keep their negative judgements to themselves. But people still ask me and that includes other races than white British.

@RishisProudMum NF comes across as a perpetually insulted snowflake.
there is nothing wrong with the interaction given the age and stage of the person involved.

Yes, a Black British person who has identified themselves as such being asked where they are really from, as though their identification of themselves is incorrect or untrue will feel violated. If you are unaware of this, there is quite a lot of available reading on the subject. Would you like recommendations?

I personally find it very entertaining to answer in a way that encourages a truly racist person to continue to dig their own bigoted grave. You seem to be suggesting that the best approach is to make it easier for racists to be racist by answering in a way that satisfies their racist rhetoric. Said like a true racists. Good to have revealed your views to the forum

How is saying "I am from Hackney" deliberately answering in an ambiguous and passively aggressive way?
