The long awaited documentray is hitting the screen on December 8th:

www.mirror.co.uk/tv/tv-news/breaking-prince-harry-meghan-markles-28607547

What with the award in a few days and the book in January they're ramping up the game.

I do think that they can be their own worst enemy, but also that the media stirs up such crap about them that they may never be able to make mistakes.

Do I believe they have not been honest? Yes.
Do I believe that the media has caused more problems then they would have had? Yes

Beautifully put

FWIW I don't like stock footage in any documentaries because I'd rather see "the real thing" or not at all, but it's surely the context which makes its use problematic here, in that it's being used about people who said very clearly they have a major problem with misrepresentation

However we don't yet know what's in the actual programme, so it's worth waiting to see how that footage will actually be presented

JustSouthofSaltzburg · 07/12/2022 09:20

@notanotheroneagain

Can you imagine a documentary where someone's says Harry and Meghan only travel by private jet. And then use stock footage of someone else entirely climbing onto a private jet. Do you think that would be a fair use of stock footage. I mean it doesn't need to be literal does it.

Indeed . Or someone claiming that MM is a bully and use footage of someone else shouting and berating a member of staff .

JustSouthofSaltzburg · 07/12/2022 09:25

@Readinginthesun that is a better example. If a documentary was produced with that footage, you can guarantee they would sue.

Serenster · 07/12/2022 09:37

Yes. If a Netflix documentary by an American director for a largely American audience wants to cover the press treatment of Katie Price, then it will be a fair use. Somehow, however, I don’t think that is terribly likely. 😀

AutumnCrow · 07/12/2022 09:38

Why Katie Price though as a comparator? She’s one of the most derided women in the UK, about a whisker away from doing prison time.

What was the message? ‘Oh here’s poor Katie on her way in for her latest drink driving hearing at Crawley magistrates’. Weird.

MaulPerton · 07/12/2022 09:39

StormzyinaTCup · 07/12/2022 09:01

Well you sound like a parody yourself, because the award is by public vote.

As you said upthread , the public can be effing stupid about H&M Wink

It may not even be 'the public'. These questions are worth considering -"Most awards are a rare thing and yet H & M have won about 27 in the space of a few months "Quick, dial back on the awards. Too obvous" I wonder why?", or, "I will never have access to those numbers on which the award is based so how do I really know that the numbers have not been manipulated to suit a purpose?.

The answer, of course, is that we don't know and never will, but having some introspection about exactly what we have to ignore or bracket in order to carry on believing is a worthwhile exercise. A healthy scepticism is a good guide.

StormzyinaTCup · 07/12/2022 09:44

Probably the same reason they went with a stock photo of the Harry Potter premier, they input into a Google search 'Katie+media' instead of 'Kate' and got Katie Price stock photos Smile.

queenofarles · 07/12/2022 09:53

What was the message? ‘Oh here’s poor Katie on her way in for her latest drink driving hearing at Crawley magistrates’. Weird.
someone had a plausible explanation for that, the lazy people responsible for doing the search typed Sussex And paparazzi and the image of Katie’s price court case at crawley came up ,
I don’t think Americans know who Katie is ,😁

Sweetpeasaremadeforbees · 07/12/2022 10:00

Netflix is doing what Netflix does, make money. And they will do whatever they can for the end goal.

^ This. Netflix couldn't give a toss whether the trailer is accurate or not, in fact the more controversy the better, I bet they're absolutely loving all the comments under the YouTube channel trailer. With their subscriptions dropping all they care about is ratings. Personally if I were Harry I wouldn't touch them with a bargepole knowing that they're going to rehash the Panorama interview but that's up to him. I wonder if their subscriptions will go up this month.

AutumnCrow · 07/12/2022 10:03

Thank you very much for the Katie-based explanatory theories!

I wonder if the US market now does have a better idea of who Katie Price is - I certainly googled Michael Cohen, so I wonder if my equivalent in Idaho did the same for Katie?

I did Harry+paparazzi** and got Harry Styles. That poor sod was harassment-papped outside his house to the point of restraining orders and a court case, and then an agreement was reached. He and his lawyers set out a good road map in the end.

**My work for today is not as interesting as this, clearly Grin

sashagabadon · 07/12/2022 10:23

Actually just thinking if the trailers are AI produced then the odd choices of Harry Potter, Katie price and piers Morgan make a bit more sense as you can understand a computer thinking they are good choices when a human might go hang on a minute!
it doesn’t explain the trump lawyer choice though?
but it doesn’t explain the lack of paparazzi chasing Meghan and Harry photos ( unless they don’t exist which I think is likely) or the cropping of balcony photos.
and even if AI did pick some of the footage why didn’t a human review it and didn’t H and M get to see the trailer/s before it was released? And did they not question it?

it is a mystery! I am a fan of the Netflix not caring what it looks like / trolling m and h theory / all publicity is good publicity theory

CathyorClaire · 07/12/2022 10:48

He doesn’t seem to spend a lot on clothes and grooming

Made me laugh to see him sporting his usual brown Hush Puppies in the 'jumping for joy by the sea' shot but I am shallow.

At least we were spared the sight of his bare hooves for once 😀

Now that such glaringly misjudged used of stock imagery has been so widely highlighted, the documentary will received even more attention for inaccuracies and dubious misrepresentations. Because its come to the attention of even normally uninterested people, such as those who don't particularly 'follow' the RF, but do click on stories in the main BBC news site.

Whatever the practice on other productions, this one is noteworthy, because its a case of 'hoist by own petard' - it's just wrong to insinuate this was the level of uninvited press intrusion (when it's not that) when its a programme that is in part all about press antics and how they mislead to big things up.

Making a fuss, deriding the action, criticising the decisions - these are all forms of lobbying. They all tell the companies that better standards are required. Especially for programmes which are expected to be making a stand against that kind of thing.

queenofarles · 07/12/2022 11:09

but it doesn’t explain the lack of paparazzi chasing Meghan and Harry photos

the only sea of photographers we ever see these days is at things like weddings and at the lindo wing door step for example,

we never see any of these chasing cars type of photographers anymore,

all engagements are invite only to a handful of agencies .
so on official engagements it’s only a certain group of photographers , you can’t just rock up with your camera ,

So it not the sort of impact Netflix is after , but it’s very misleading . They want drama and chasing and frenzy .

I think someone mentioned on here that there are pictures so many private pictures Catherine and her children on SM that are never published in the papers , but if one gets published it’s because it was approved by their office.

not even a company as big as Netflix understands the dynamics of the press in the U.K.

Readinginthesun · 07/12/2022 09:22

Why do I get a feeling that all you both just said has been done before. 😁

I do know that the DM said MM flew private to US, and let that sit and stew. Then a few weeks later released a pic of MM going on a commercial flight !

Anyway, you haters are clawing on to all sorts of things.

Travelyst is not against private flying, but they do insist that you do your carbon offset. That is what H was telling those billionaires at the google summit. Elton John tried to explain this, but he was shut down, so the narrative can always be ' but they use private jets' despite the fact they need security?. Nonsense.

Strangely enough. I don't follow Katie at all. She is a human being (probably led to drink by the hounding, tbh).
I do know however that she (and Gemma, Kerry Katona etc.) have been trolled wayyyyy more than necessary.

These people don't make any decisions that affect our lives, they don't even have the wealth (and therefore employment/weath clout etc) to mean anything.

Remember when Hancock was caught cheating? Who was hounded? Right, his wife!

AutumnCrow · 07/12/2022 11:22

@sashagabadon No I can't work out the logic or even the accidental choice of using the image of Michael Cohen, Trump's lawyer who worked for the now criminally convicted Trump Organization, on his way to surrender himself to jail time.

Is it because he turned on and bit the hand that was feeding him? Because 'message-wise', having googled the guy to refresh my crap memory, I just see a bent bastard who did a deal with the DA to minimise his own jail sentence.

Answers please on a postcard.

Don't even go there Hmm
Good luck then, trying to explain it's normal practice to use stock footage against the shrieks of "hatred", "racism" and the rest

I have seen posts saying how much millions they make out of the hate. (MM lawyers asked for those profits to be given in the case they won).

Well, yes, so you pick a side that you think will improve life. People have access to different information, think differently, view the world from different perspectives. There isn't a right or wrong. Some people want the RF while others want whatever it is that H & M are offering. One thing is certain, though. Whichever way you jump, the stakes are, indeed, high.

It’s a dirty game indeed

Serenster · 07/12/2022 11:33

Quite, MaulPerton. Surely it’s obvious that that is exactly the market Meghan and Harry are operating in themselves, too, to make their money.

sashagabadon · 07/12/2022 11:37

I completely agree “hate” against mm and also the royal family drives income for lots of people and I think netflix are completely playing them both. It is a “dirty business “
my view is that the royal family tried to protect m and h from the vultures out to prey on them as they did need protecting and Harry in particular is/ was naive but they threw this protection away in January 2020.
like bashir preying on Diana’s paranoia with fake documents and telling her she could trust no one but him, h and m are also media playthings now.
I am back to feeling sorry for Harry now as I think he is being completely taken advantage of and probably doesn’t even realise.

AutumnCrow · 07/12/2022 11:43

I thought it was odd (in an illuminating way) what Harry said last night at the award thingy. He made a joke about not really knowing why he was there, that he thought he was going on a 'date night' with Meghan and then said 'We don't get out much these days'.

Yeah, I think they're being taken for a ride now.
