Prince Harry's Memoir: A World Publishing Phenomenon

There will likely be several bashing threads on Harry's memoir before it is published, but I am interested in discussing with anyone who is interested in the very interesting marketing choices of the publishers and their approach.

English language editions of SPARE will be published on 10 January 2023 in EIGHT territories: the US, the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, India, South Africa and Canada.

The book will also be published in translation in 15 additional languages:

SPANISH Plaza & Janés/Penguin Random House Grupo Editorial
GERMAN Penguin Verlag/Penguin Random House Verlagsgruppe GmbH, PORTUGUESE BRAZIL Objetiva/Grupo Companhia das Letras
PORTUGUESE PORTUGAL Objectiva/Penguin Random House Grupo Editorial, SIMPLIFIED CHINESE Penguin Random House China
DANISH Politikens Forlag
DUTCH Hollands Diep, an imprint of Overamstel
FINNISH Otava Publishing Company Ltd
FRENCH Éditions Fayard
GREEK Pedio Books
HUNGARIAN Corvina Kiadó
ITALIAN Mondadori,
POLISH Wydawnictwo Marginesy,
ROMANIAN Nemira Publishing House,
SWEDISH Albert Bonniers Förlag.

This is absolutely sensational as it means it will be simultaneously published in 23 territories on the same day.

There are not many books where simultaneous release occurs in different markets. From this, I would say that the book will more than earn its advance, just from the foreign sales alone.

They also chose a banger of a title as it puts focus on the troubling notion of the Spare in a system based on primogeniture, and one that imbues both intrinsic and extrinsic value based on a person's birth order.

Imagine growing up knowing that no matter how loved you may be, your constitutional role is ultimately to be the spare to the heir.

Can't wait to read it!

Routinely USES that should say. A book published just this year by Sarah, Duchess of York.
Another one due next year

Sarah isn’t trashing the royal family as a way to make money though.

Roussette · 13/11/2022 20:00

What?

I'm not backing down from anything thanks.

I'm glad they've got their titles and hope they keep them. Certainly whilst his Uncle's ex wife of 25 years routinely used her titles

Just jog on with your 'wide eyed innocennt' twaddle

Harry will always be royal by the fact he's the King's son.

And insists people defer to that and use his title, despite his criticisms of the institution of royalty

Which is why I say he is a hypocrite.

She has done in the past. See her book My Story.

She can't now. As I said without the RF and taxpayer funding her, she'd be financially compromised greatly. She knows she has to shut up. How can she criticise the RF or the institution whilst living in 98 acre Royal Lodge

Well, various monarchies are re-defining who is considered 'royal'.

The Danish Queen has taken away the designation of 'royal' from 4 of her grandchildren.

The Dutch King removed some cousins once he ascended the throne.

George V took away various 'HRH' titles, and restricted others.

Being 'royal' is in the gift of the monarch. It changes every so often to reflect societal views of 'royal'. Just as any other weird and anachronistic title changes over time.

Just as Henry VIII was lining up his illegitimate but adult son the Duke of Richmond to become 'royal' and his heir.

Sigma33 · 13/11/2022 20:28

I mean, I could insist I am 'royal'. That I be addressed as the Duchess of Parving-Major. I could even change my name officially to 'Duchess of Parving-Major'.It is meaningless.

Being the 'Duke and Duchess of Sussex' is meaningless, unless they believe in its meaning.

You could insist on anything you like.

you aren’t a monarch so your insistence is pretty meaningless.

unless you have evidence that Charles is about to cast out his own son from the Royal family, I’m not entirely sure what your point is.
Harry and Meghan are Royals

Sigma33 · 13/11/2022 20:38

Well, if you reject the concept of monarchy, reject the concept of titles bestowed by monarchy.

If you believe in monarchy, then accept the second born is not as important as the first born and is the 'spare'

She told the tribunal at Reading, Berkshire: "I assumed I had been asked to do this because Prince Harry was a weak student."

So your statement "he got a teacher to cheat for him" is incorrect.

😂

Oh a Sunday evening game of chess is always nice (even if it is with a feathered opponent) 😉

Sigma33 · 13/11/2022 21:12

H&M can insist (issue statements) about whatever they like. Being 'royal' is meaningless, and in the gift of the sovereign.

If you reject the power of the monarch to decide who gets what title you reject their power to give you a title. So stop using the title...

Croque · 13/11/2022 21:12

All hail, Harry! Hail to thee, Duke Of Sussex!
All hail, Harry! Hail to thee, Earl of Dumbarton!
All hail, Harry, that shalt be king hereafter!

Their entertainment value (that's all it ever was) is diminishing by the week.

TBF They were show stoppers in lockdown when the world had nothing else to do or gawp at but like the proverbial two-edged sword lockdown simultaneously prevented their gravy train gaining momentum.

Whole thing's been a comedy of bad timing.

It will be interesting to see how well the book sells - the publisher must think it’s going to sell well

Well it's already been reduced to an alleged half price in multiple outlets. Surely cynical moi can't be the only one scenting a marketing stunt downwind...

MaulPerton · 13/11/2022 21:40

a marketing stunt downwind...

Marketing has been strange throughout. Lead-in is too long. Won't everyone be fed up of hearing about the book by the time it finally makes an appearance? Also, why release it immediately after Christmas when everyone is in a low January mood and has no money to spend on much of anything never mind books?

They’re probably hoping loads of people get Amazon vouchers for Christmas, and spend them on Harry’s book in January?

milti · 13/11/2022 23:06

I think penguin, Netflix and Spotify are thoroughly fed up with them - they’ll release their products and then not touch them with a sticky one again

milti · 13/11/2022 23:07

Hollywood won’t touch them - they are too indiscreet and discretion is all

Grantanow · 13/11/2022 23:10

Bet this is in the remainder section pretty quickly.

Harry comparing himself to children who lost a parent in the fields of war is a new take.

When did he do that? If so that’s disgusting

ThighMistress · 14/11/2022 09:47

bizarre to defend Harry’s A Level shenanigans. Obviously Art is in a separate category (along with other practical subjects) but this demonstrates why continuous assessment for most subjects was binned. Do you really think, Roussette, that a candidate is blameless if their mother wrote an essay or the teacher - with the student’s knowledge - improved it? What if it were one of Boris’s dcs who had done this or a Mnetter posting about helping their own dc - is it all fine and dandy? Confused Weird view of public examinations when you seem to approve of submitting material that is not all your own work .

Jaffacakeorisitabiscuit · 14/11/2022 10:01

Actually, Prince Harry and Meghan haven't covered themselves in glory over this period. They also 'shared a photo' taken by their wedding photographer Hmm of them honouring service personnel but also listing in detail the veterans and armed forces charities they support. Nuffink like making it all about them........

Morestrangethings · 14/11/2022 10:05

Harrys letter to the children:

“We share a bond even without ever meeting one another, because we share in having lost a parent. I know first-hand the pain and grief that comes with loss and want you to know that you are not alone."

He continued, "While difficult feelings will come up today as we pay tribute to heroes like your mum or dad, I hope you can find comfort and strength in knowing that their love for you lives and shines on. Whenever you need a reminder of this, I encourage you to lean into your friends at Scotty's Little Soldiers. One of the ways I've learned to cope has been through community and talking about my grief, and I couldn't be more grateful and relieved that you have amazing people walking beside you throughout your journey. We all know some days are harder than others, but together those days are made easier."

"Today and every day, I admire and respect all the men and women who have given their lives in service of us — especially those in your family," Harry said. "I am also incredibly proud of you for being the best example in remembering them."

On Sunday, 55 members of the Scotty's Little Soldiers and their parents marched in the National Service of Remembrance parade in London, sporting yellow and black scarves.

"When you march together in today's parade, wearing your yellow and black scarves, I know it will be hard, but equally important to do," Prince Harry wrote. "Today you will bring new awareness to young people, just like you, who will benefit from this community of support. I salute you for serving others in need, in the most honourable memory of your parent."

He signed the letter, "With my deepest respect, Harry."
