Presumably as this will coincide with the May Day bank holiday week? Going to be a busy time in London.

@EndlessMagpies my memory was that it was brought in as an official bank holiday by Michael Foot in the 1980s ? I'm off to google now (I do know mayday is a historic day and has been for thousands of years, but the question was why the Tories hated it?)

Giving the peasants an extra day off was probably what they didn't like!

Is it not highly likely they would have checked with Harry?

Genuine question, but why?

It can’t be that day, it’s Archie’s 4th birthday and we have a Build A Bear party planned

Oh okay, I’ll tell everyone this massive state and public event will have to shift”.

Is not a conversation I can realistically imagine happening. I am sure key calendars of the most important people there would have been consulted, but on a “any genuine problem” rather than “any clash?” basis. Once they have a date that suits, bar a vey few key people, you either make it or you don’t.

(By the by, but William had a longstanding engagement to present the FA Cup on the day Harry and Meghan selected fro their wedding. He skipped it to be at the wedding. The Queen couldn’t make Louis’ christening as she had too much on around the chosen date)They have busy diaries - clashes are inevitable).

antelopevalley · 12/10/2022 15:16

Bloody hell who do they have to move bank holidays at this stage! Do they not realise plebs plan holidays way in advance ffs.

antelopevalley · 12/10/2022 15:17

They will not have thought of Archie's birthday. I doubt it crossed their mind. I wonder if Charles even knows the date without checking.

Maireas · 12/10/2022 17:02

I don't think Charles made the decision - wasn't it parliament?

AnApparitionQuipped · 12/10/2022 17:03

BBC saying it hasn't been ruled out:

They always say the government decided even if the Royal Family have made their views known to the government.

Maireas · 12/10/2022 17:15

The government made the decision.

antelopevalley · 12/10/2022 17:45

@ma You really think the government decided without getting the views of the Royal Family?

Maireas · 12/10/2022 17:53

Maybe, antelope. I don't really think it matters. What I understand is that it was not the King's decision alone.

PolkaDotMankini · 12/10/2022 18:26

Calendar printers will be tearing their hair out. A decision needs to be made PDQ.

Nah, they just print them anyway and sell them with the wrong date marked as the holiday. Remember, it was belatedly changed in 2019 to May 8 2020, so we could have all those heady celebrations, mass parties and parades sit at home watching telly in lockdown for the 75th anniversary of VE Day?

Which date do you think it should have been, that wouldn't have messed up the holiday plans of the plebs.

Possibly there are some plebs who would have grumbled, whatever date had been chosen.

gogohmm · 12/10/2022 18:46

It was a matter of balancing lots of things including football of all things. For whatever reason the Saturday before wasn't suitable

Mosaic123 · 12/10/2022 18:53

I don't think the Chief Rabbi or any religious Jewish people will be able to attend on a Saturday. No travel except for walking is allowed.

It seems ill judged to pick the Jewish Sabbath day.

Could they travel the day before and stay within walking distance of the abbey?

LondonWolf · 12/10/2022 20:05

Harry played polo on Archie's birthday this year.

Maybe it's why it's only an hour long, so they can all troop back to Frogmore for pass the parcel and musical chairs later?

Coucous · 12/10/2022 20:48

TrashyPanda · 11/10/2022 18:19

And it’s Archie’s 4th birthday

It's actually pretty pathetic when a whole grown man who is a King of a country competes with a 4 year old's Birthday.

I don’t know, but so could the football maybe to do with police officers available?
There’s always extra police when matches are on round here

Floweryflora · 12/10/2022 21:27

I think he’s shafted us. I’d have went for June July Aug sept and given the population and additional bank holiday. It’s not like we don’t need some cheer.

I think it’s the right call.
People we’re fuming about the cost of the one for the funeral.
The state of the economy, interest rates, cost of living etc I heard so many varying numbers about the cost of it for us all, and I can’t be put through that again 🤣

Is he having a larger real bouncy castle and more balloons than Archie?

llareggub · 12/10/2022 23:58

It’s an excellent way to keep the local election results out of the press.

toomuchlaundry · 13/10/2022 00:23

@flowerycurtain is that the real reason, DC’s private school don’t recognise that bank holiday but assumed it is because they have boarders and all other bank holidays fall within school holidays
