Presumably as this will coincide with the May Day bank holiday week? Going to be a busy time in London.

Not sure why it had to be on Archie's birthday? I'd be a bit annoyed if I were his parents tbh.

I suspect it will be a considerably scaled-back version, and not on the scale of QEII's coronation.

I suspect so too, as that is what Charles has repeatedly explicitly said.

StillNotWarm · 11/10/2022 20:17

I'd heard the 7th June mentioned, and just thought "what about the GCSE's if they put an extra bank holiday in". So guess its an improvement on that!

Maybe it was intentional and meant as an inclusive gesture - the King did make a point of including H&M in his speech the day after the Queen died.

I thought the 1st May was traditionally a European holiday that was introduced when we joined the EU .

No, it was introduced in 1978 - we'd been in the EEC as it was then since 1973.

Not in the UK it isn't.

I think you'll find it goes back a good few thousand years before that.

It was a Bank Holiday in Scotland since 1871 (when the first laws on bank hols were introduced)

In rest of UK it was introduced in 1978, by then then Labour government and despite criticism from the Conservative opposition based on it being international Labour Day (instituted 1890)

FFS! I don't work Fridays. That's three years on the trot I've had one of my bank holidays moved to a day I don't work 🙄😆

buggeredmyleg · 11/10/2022 20:30

Thanks for the clarification on the date. I had it in my head it was 1989/81

Don't you get the hours back? Where I work, all the bank holiday hours are added to your annual leave, but only deducted if they fall on a day you'd normally be working.

There's been no information about a Bank Holiday on the Friday yet.

FirstnameSuesecondnamePerb · 11/10/2022 20:48

I bet they will move the May Day holiday to the 5th, which will cause consternation local to me and the May Day festival.

limitededitionbarbie · 11/10/2022 20:56

Runnerduck34 · 11/10/2022 19:32

Well I'm really disappointed it looks like we won't be getting an extra bank holiday!
It's about the only thing the royal family are good for, the occasional extra bank holiday and the pomp and pageantry of a big royal event. Looks like we will be short changed on both counts!

I feel the same

They will be annoyed anyway probably about something. The birthday, where they are sitting.

Although the Year 6 SATs start on Monday 8th so a BH on Friday 5th would be a nightmare for Y6 teachers!

shinynewapple22 · 11/10/2022 21:15

Maybe we'll get a BH on the 1at and the 5th - could do a week holiday only using 3 days AL then!

Kocakolakazza · 11/10/2022 21:20

Soon as I heard it announced I thought they're going to move the bank holiday. Which is bloody annoying because it's mine and DS birthday thar week and we will need to change our plans if it does move.

CaveMum · 11/10/2022 21:24

The rumours of 3rd June were causing much consternation in the horseracing industry (where I work) as that would be a clash with Derby Day! As it stands 6th May is a clash with the first Classic race of the year, the 2,000 Guineas, so there will be a lot of hurried meetings in the coming weeks to figure out whether to move the race or keep it on the day and hope people still want to come! Moving high profile races around is a very complicated business!

flowerycurtain · 11/10/2022 21:28

some private schools don't have the early May bank holiday because of it being brought in by a Labour government!

Calmdown14 · 11/10/2022 21:35

If they move the bank holiday my kids will be missing school.

Booked a weekend away based on the calendar provided at the start of the year.

Quveas · 11/10/2022 21:37

Aww, what a shame. Utterly devastated. I will be in another country and will miss it all. If only I had had the foresight to be elsewhere a month ago...

She was a stubborn taurus

Is that the same as a steady, reliable, faithful Taurus?

PicturesOfDogs · 12/10/2022 11:48

Maybe I’m being cynical, but it being Archie’s birthday might be to give H&M the excuse not to go.
They were always very positive about the Queen, Charles and William - not so much.

Wouldn’t Harry have to swear fealty to the King or something?
It might be to avoid drama?

Serenster · 12/10/2022 12:46

It might just be because when you have factor in the availability of the King, the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Prime Minister, the police force to protect London and not clash with other high profile events going on in spring and early summer (The FA Cup in June, for example) the dates you can pick are fairly limited, and the birthday of a 4 year old family member really isn’t a factor?

AnApparitionQuipped · 12/10/2022 12:48

Is it not highly likely they would have checked with Harry?
