Who will be watching it?

I met Jonathon Pryce once -asked him if I could take a chair from his table!

@mummyh2016 Season 5 is the last season

It's not, they're filming series 6 at the moment.

RandomPenguinHouse · 10/10/2022 18:20

Thanks for answering @Ohnonevermind and @jeffgoldblum !

I saw Matt Smith on stage before he was famous and was even on TV and he was a firecracker - I knew he would become famous. I've only seen him on TV in small parts, not having watched either The Crown or Dr Who. I wonder if he's an actor that 'translates' better on stage.

I always thought Olivia Coleman was an odd choice for the Queen. Her amazing strength IMO from a casting point of view has always been that she is an everywoman, and portrays the mundane and also passive aggression really well. I can't see this as a fit for the Queen. Claire Foy in contrast has an ethereal quality about her which works better. I think Imelda Staunton might be very good.

jeffgoldblum · 10/10/2022 18:23

I'm afraid rather shallowly , I can't look at Imelda Staunton without seeing her awful Harry Potter character! , I've forgotten every else she's ever done!

Coucous · 10/10/2022 18:28

Then the Courtiers threads should be moved to other sections for reading / fiction. There’s no proof anything in it is factual.
Why do people want to police everything?

We know it’s TV series and not all factual - Harry himself said it isn’t but close enough.

I don’t watch the Crown, I’d rather Bridgerton or something more exciting so I won’t contribute much to this thread but will read.

jeffgoldblum · 10/10/2022 18:30

True , archetypes would also have to be moved as a podcast, you could say the same for many threads!

ImAvingOops · 10/10/2022 18:33

I think the leap from Claire Foy to Olivia Coleman was too stark - OC might look more like the real Queen but she doesn't look like an aged Foy!
Matt Smith was brilliant as Phillip - I like Tobias Menzies too by the first 2 seasons had better stories for Phillip.

I thought Keeley Hawes would have been a good choice. She looks like Claire Foy's older sister!

I thought Olivia Colman was dreadful in the role. She looked totally uncomfortable, especially in season 3. I agree with @RandomPenguinHouse that she's much better suited to 'everywoman' type roles, but I generally think she's a massively overrated actress. She's the same character in everything.

ImAvingOops · 10/10/2022 18:45

Yes, Keeley Hawes would have been great

Ohnonevermind · 10/10/2022 18:47

Helena BC was great, and her contrast made the Queen even more dull ? by comparison. I don’t think the queen is as staid as she was portrayed. We’ve seen videos, her hands trailing over grandkids hair as they walked past whispering to them, video’s of her running through the royal box to see horses. You couldn’t imagine Olivia’s character doing that.

Loved Gillian Anderson as Margaret Thatcher.

Having lived in Brixton when I lived in London, I wonder if they will show the riots and the football disasters at Heysel and Hillsborough too.

Ohnonevermind · 10/10/2022 18:48

@Coucous

There will be a thread in telly addicts as it’s such a popular series so will have 2 threads on the same topic 🤷‍♀️

Ohnonevermind · 10/10/2022 18:51

Jennifer Ehle might have made a better Queen for me. I’ve liked her in everything I’ve seen

Totally agree about the leap from Claire Foy to Olivia Coleman being too stark.
Part of that is because despite their real ages, Claire Foy looks much younger than she actually is and 'plays' younger, whilst Olivia plays her age and older.

Ohnonevermind · 10/10/2022 19:05

My brother loves Imelda Staunton (gypsy and sweeney Todd) so a little different to the Queen 🤣

I normally really like Gillian Anderson, but she was dreadful as Thatcher. She played her like a little old lady when she was only in her 50s, the same age as Anderson herself, at the time. Seems being Peter Morgan's girlfriend had some benefits.

I also didn't rate Helena Bonham Carter. I think, like Olivia Colman, she is really overrated and always plays a version of the same character. She had none of the subtlety or nuance of Vanessa Kirby.

RandomPenguinHouse · 10/10/2022 19:11

Oh Anderson is Peter Morgan's girlfriend... I'd completely forgotten that!

I completely agree with you about Helena Bonham Carter and Olivia Colman always playing a version of the same character.

Ohnonevermind · 10/10/2022 19:16

Vanessa Kirby and Claire Foy were such a great pairing.

The balmoral scenes with MT and Denis were funny though fictional - ditto the POTUS Johnson ones too.

ajandjjmum · 10/10/2022 19:19

I am looking forward to seeing the new series.

I am only sorry that some people are stupid/ignorant/naive enough to believe that it's a true record.

Glad to see the back of Olivia Coleman in that role.

TheRubyRedshoes · 10/10/2022 19:24

Definitely watching.

Just re watching it with DD and it's absolutely brilliant.
Amazing in every way, just as a drama without the royals angle.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 10/10/2022 21:46

The media said the Royal Family had made that (fiction warning) request

The media say a lot of things, but that doesn't necessarily make them true - doubly so when what they're really seeking is more viewers/clicks

And what does "pretty factual" mean? I'd say that surely it either is or it isn't, but then some also treat Twitter as a source of reliable information, so ...

Margaret Thatcher's ex-private secretary said the tone was right.

Keeled Hawes actually played Claire Foy’s sister in the remake of Upstairs Downstairs before Claire Foy did Wolf Hall - that’s a great shout casting wise! Jennifer Ehle would have been good too

I didn't know that! They really do look alike. Same fine features and 'English rose' look.

There was always going to be a bit of a 'jolt' with the transition to the new cast in the 3rd series, but Colman's queen seemed like a completely different character to Claire Foy's portrayal. She was really miscast. I think she gets a lot of roles just because she's Olivia Colman, and not because she's the right actress for the part.

ExcaliburBaby · 11/10/2022 07:35

@IcedPurple i agree. I love OC and think shes a brilliant actress - but I do think she was miscast in this. The difference between CF and her was just really jarring. Matt Smith to Tobias Menzies was much better casting.
