The royal family

Camilla couldn’t give a fig about being Queen

Queen or Queen consort, please let’s not discuss that.

She has great involvement in issues that she’s bothered about like Osteoporosis, children reading, domestic violence.

Her services, at Local and national level, alone or with The King are regular and demanding for a lady of her age.

Her husband loves her. She loves him. She has made him more human

Queen (or whatever, is the last priority for her)

But other than a slimmed down monarchy, without a referendum, the public have no chance of getting closer to a republic at this time.

And we ain’t getting another referendum anytime soon Grin

Turnaroundandigone · 04/10/2022 17:36

I like Camilla. I'm not a royalist in any way, shape or form but I think she is great.

I feel for staunch republicans at the moment. They spent years saying loudly “Everything will change when the Queen dies, no one will want Charles as King”. And then the Queen dies, and Charles becomes King and actually people across the country are happy with that - engaged even - and the republicans have totally missed their big moment. I’m sure it will come again! Such is the nature of things. But for now there seems to be a lot of frustrations being taken out on threads like this.

It's very very early days. We can't judge a thing a matter of weeks into his reign

Novella4 · 04/10/2022 14:48

@smilesy lol!!!

That's their whole game !
It's old hat now and it's mostly only the elderly who believe it so I guess they'll have to come up with something soon

Just catching up. Have been at work.

I don’t quite understand what you are “lol” at and what is old hat. Which of my points are your referring to?

Also, this is at least the second ageist post that you have posted in recent days. If you’ll excuse the pun, it’s getting old now. Not everyone who is elderly as you put it is in favour of the RF but equally there are young people who are. You do not know everyone’s opinion on the matter. Neither do I, so I try and avoid sweeping generalisations.

Novella4 · 04/10/2022 19:31

@smilesy

I think you said something similar to 'why do the royal marriages have to be perfect' and that's what I was responding to .
I can't remember exactly .

Re m:you pointing out that I said royalists tend to be elderly - they do . The young ( and by that I mean under 35) don't want them . So their days are numbered .

I read something recently which profiled the typical royal supporter
-a woman

  • over 60
-right wing
  • pro brexit

I'm sure that's an over simplification!

Re all this talk of separate houses I saw someone on Twitter today say that H and M look like the only royal couple who share a bed 😄

Maireas · 04/10/2022 19:33

"I'm sure that's an oversimplification"
No shit.

Novella4 · 04/10/2022 19:34

It must be ...

SirChenjins · 04/10/2022 19:38

A recent survey would suggest it’s a bit more mixed

Ohnonevermind · 04/10/2022 19:42

As people age, they may change their mind which a snapshot survey is unable to measure, or some random person on mumsnet.

Rapidtango · 04/10/2022 19:47

'Re all this talk of separate houses I saw someone on Twitter today say that H and M look like the only royal couple who share a bed 😄'

Probably because we're so used to celebs and reality TV stars groping each other all the time we've forgotten people can have a lovely relationship with their spouse without resorting to nauseating public displays of affection.

Did you have a look at the photos posted of the crowds in Dunfermline? Plenty of young, old and everything in between, men, women, children, and as I remember, Scotland voted against Brexit so probably not all Brexit supporters either.

Ohnonevermind · 04/10/2022 19:54

I remember Tom Cruise used to paw his wives in a similar fashion, 😉 how did that work out

Dinoteeth · 04/10/2022 19:59

How many wife's did Mr Cruise have?
Did M paw her ex in same way?

smilesy · 04/10/2022 20:02

@Novella4
it’s so nice that you can’t remember exactly what you responded to. Maybe you could look at my post to jog your memory 🙄. I actually said that I don't remember the Royals ever setting themselves up as a perfect family. I certainly don’t think they are.
As for the ageism, you said elsewhere that only people over 60 believe the RF’s PR and overlook them controlling the press. You seem to be implying that older people have no capacity for critical thinking which I find unpleasant. I am not in the age group that you seem to dismiss out of hand as simpletons who believe what they are fed by the Royals, but I find your attitude to older people, and older women in particular, distasteful.

Ohnonevermind · 04/10/2022 20:55

@Dinoteeth

i just meant there can’t be any link between PDA’s and marriage happiness or Katie Holmes wouldn’t have run for the hills.

now if Harry gets a tattoo of Meghan anywhere we know they’re fecked 🤣

MarshaMelrose · 04/10/2022 20:57

No, when Meghan jumps on Oprahs settee, they're fecked!!!!

antelopevalley · 04/10/2022 21:06

You do not need PDAs to see whether a couple are into each other or not.

Rapidtango · 04/10/2022 21:12

Indeed you don't.

antelopevalley · 04/10/2022 22:45

Harry and Meghan
and Charles and Camilla look as if they are into each other.

In your opinion

MarshaMelrose · 04/10/2022 23:58

I think it's horrible picking over people's marriages. When C&C, W&C and H&M got married, it was clear that they loved each other very much and I haven't seen that change at all. All three couples seem very happy when they're with their spouses.
Just because people hold hands, it doesn't mean that they love each other more or have a happier marriage than those that don't. In fact, I've seen tapes of where Harry's tried not to hold Meghan's hand and has looked unhappy when she persisted. Equally, I've seen him reach for her hand so it obviously gives him succour and pleasure. I've seen both Charles and William hold their wives' hands in private but don't do it in work situations, which is what the Queen had clearly ruled. Also C&C and W&K have been in relationships for years and years. They're not recently met and married. Their relationships are tried and tested and don't need constant reassurance by holding hands.
Until one of the couples tells us differently, I think we should lay off implying any of them are unhappy in their marriages, and hope, for their sakes and for those of their children, that they carry on being happily married for a very long time. 💏

SilverLiningPlaybook · 05/10/2022 09:18

To me,
a need for constant displays of affection in public suggests an insecurity and a need to make things obvious in case of doubt. Those who are truly secure in their relationship don’t grab and stroke each other constantly. Especially when they are older and have been married before.

Ohnonevermind · 05/10/2022 09:27

@SilverLiningPlaybook

people whose relationships are in the spotlight respond differently. I wouldn’t judge anyone by what they do or don’t do (apart from Tom Cruise🤣)

MarshaMelrose · 05/10/2022 09:47

No judging Tom Cruise, please. He makes fab pictures and does his own stunts. He's allowed to jump on a settee or two. 💓

Ohnonevermind · 05/10/2022 10:27

@MarshaMelrose

he decided to play Jack reacher !! An iconic 6 foot 4/5 character who relies on his size in fights and who is much loved by fans in the Lee child books.

MarshaMelrose · 05/10/2022 10:36

I know. But his presence is so big, its like he's 6½ft! Hehe. Anyway, I've read some Jack Reacher books, and I think his brooding presence is more stressed than his height and TC got that right. I enjoyed both films although they didn't have to be Reacher films - I guess he wanted the plot lines. (I'm not a big Reacher fan to be fair. I've only read as many as I have because my sister raves about them. I've given up on them now. So maybe that's why I don't mind TC in the role. I love Tom.)
