The last thread filled up during a particularly chatty morning.

^Well, yes, it does.
That's how puzzles work; they're intended to be misleading.
In this case, it relies on people expecting surgeons to be male.
My point being that there was a stronger bias back in the day, so it seemed trickier.
These days most people would see immediately that the surgeon was the child's mother and find the premise sexist in the extreme.
So, no: I didn't overlook that.^

@LaMarschallin You haven’t understood my point, which is: the wording is misleading in ways beyond relying on people expecting surgeons to be male.

Having the main subjects of the riddle be both male manipulates the listener/reader by suggestion to be thinking ‘male’. If the child was a daughter, it would be far less likely to trip up the subset of people who aren’t so patriarchally biased and are well aware there are female surgeons.

And obviously the “how is this possible?” at the end is meant to make the listener/reader question themselves and focus on the father and son.

Isn’t that partly the point of the question though, as it highlights how unconscious internalised misogyny happens in the first place.

You realise that the phrasing used in the question steers you to thinking only a male answer is relevant. This then, potentially, starts to make you aware how things are phrased to you/present to you as a child has your subconscious mind conditioned to accept misogyny (and other -isms) that your conscious mind would not accept.

RandomPenguinHouse · 03/10/2022 16:01

You would hope so @Arucanafeather but given what @LaMarschallin was saying about how old the ‘puzzle’ is, I suspect there’s no nuance to it and it was considered a big shock for a woman to be a surgeon!

Thank you, Arucanafeather, that's exactly what I wanted to say but wouldn't have put it half so well.

By the way, do you keep hens? Just wondering because of the name. I used to have various sorts of bantams but, sadly, no longer.

RandomPenguinHouse

I don't want to derail the thread with my original post, which was meant to be just a small contribution to the misogyny discussion.

A small request: I prefer not to be "@-ed" in general (unless I'm asking a question or something) and I return the favour. It's a nuisance getting the email only to see it's something pretty trivial. Be assured, I usually catch up with threads I've posted on eventually, so will see replies.

RandomPenguinHouse · 03/10/2022 16:25

LaMarschallin

Oh the thread has been derailed so much so many times that I’ve personally given up on trying to stop derails. Yours is the first I’ve joined in!

But good on you not wanting to derail. Although with respect, I’ve noticed along the way that most of your posts on her and the last have been derails of some sort.

I note your request not to be @ed. Why don’t you change your settings not to get emailed if you’re tagged? Much easier than trying to control posters’ use of a forum function. I will try and remember that you don’t like being tagged whereas nearly everyone else hasn’t expressed a preference. Bit like having having to remember individuals’ preferred pronouns…

RandomPenguinHouse

Thanks. And it really wasn't a derail - I joined in a discussion that had already started and hadn't expected to get so many replies.

I'm amazed I've posted enough for anyone to notice my posts. I often tend, if I do post, to put something lighthearted (well, it's intended to be!) and don't expect much in the way of replies.

I won't change my settings. Generally it's quite rare for me to be @-ed but three occasions in a fairly short space of time (one just to include me in a reply to another poster) was getting quite irritating.

Don't worry if you forget; I can always remind you.

RandomPenguinHouse · 03/10/2022 16:51

Oh I remember your name LaMarschallin because you were matey with a poster, TheMustressMhor, you were on her Robbing Butcher her threads.

She was famous round these parts because she was a a repeatedly banned poster who was a bit racist, started loads of H&M threads, got deleted repeatedly, tried to encourage everyone to go to this new forum (MumsChat) and apparently boasted about how many accounts she’d created on MN after being banned each time.

So as you were one of her MN muckers, your name always stands out for me.

OP posts:
RandomPenguinHouse · 03/10/2022 16:55

Oh and I use the @ function to ensure I get a poster’s name correct without having to scroll back and copy + paste. I have ADHD so I will forget things. No bother with you reminding me as long as you’re polite and not entitled.

OP posts:
LaMarschallin · 03/10/2022 16:59

I remember MistressMhor.
It was quite soon after I joined MN and she was friendly to me. I remember the Robbing Butcher threads and the square sausage.
And, yes, like others I heard about the banning and the alternative forum.

I certainly wouldn't describe myself as "one of her MN muckers", with all that implies, because I wasn't.

LaMarschallin · 03/10/2022 17:00

Thanks! I'd like to think I'm always polite.

RandomPenguinHouse · 03/10/2022 17:29

What I meant by that LaMarschallin is that her robbing butcher threads were chat threads amongst a small-ish group of posters who met on the Meghan and Harry, which were centred round her and her tales; they were ‘chummy’. (Others might say cliquey but I think that would be unfair.)

You were on all her robbing butcher threads for several months until she was banned for the umpteenth time and moved to another forum so I think calling you one of her MN muckers is fair and factual.

Yes. As I've already explained, I posted it to show how attitudes have changed.
I didn't expect anybody nowadays to pop up with the answer saying "It's obvious!".
Of course it's obvious; that was my point.
And it wasn't obvious up to the 80s, amazingly, when I was part of a project looking at attitudes to female surgeons.

Actually you’re overlooking something else that’s highly relevant and rather obvious:

the details, wording and phrasing deliberately manipulates the responder towards having a male bias.

Well, yes, it does.
That's how puzzles work; they're intended to be misleading.

PS Is anyone else having trouble quoting a post by the OP? I wanted to use the quote function here but had to c&p because only the "See all" and "bookmark" options were available, whereas other posts had the "quote" button too.
Not sure if it's an MN glitch or trouble on my side.

The “Quote “ button disappeared for me too ,so likely a glitch.

RandomPenguinHouse · 03/10/2022 17:31

Should obvs be ‘met on the Meghan & Harry THREADS’ Grin

”Met on the Meghan & Harry” sounds like a bingo call or Cockney Rhyming Slang. For what, I don’t know. Answers on a post card.

Cockney rhyming slang.

Yes I remember that poster. IIRC she posted a lot of Islamaphobic stuff.

MissMarpleRocks · 03/10/2022 18:17

Quick question
I used to put @ in then delete @ & add * at before & after name so i wouldn’t have to the put the name. Anyone know if you can still do that thanks

RandomPenguinHouse · 03/10/2022 18:25

I don’t remember the Islamophobia specifically Gilmorehill but I’m not surprised given the racist undertone of sone of MustressMhor’s other posts. Although I thought Mhor seemed sweet and mildly amusing at first, it quickly became apparent she was trolling and unpleasant beneath the veneer of light-heartedness.

Which is why I side-eye all those who stayed on her chat threads until she got kicked off, particularly those who present themselves as intelligent and ostensibly should have known better.

Well, I can't stop you calling me that any more than I can stop you @-ing me if you want to. I can say that I don't agree.

Posting on someone's threads doesn't mean I share their views. I would say her "muckers" were people who joined her on the other forum and, possibly, shared some of her views.
People will just have to judge me on my posts.
This may end up being a derail, so I'd best not post any more about it.

My dh and dcs are muslim so I would be more alert to the islamaphobia. I found her very nasty.

I know the one you mean. And for the same reasons. It’s why the ref Harry made to ‘ragheads’ told me all there is to know about him.

@MissMarpleRocks no you can’t delete the @ from the name, I used to do the same and have tried to do so with your name here, but it just deleted the whole name.

Hence why I use it. It’s a function designed to be helpful, and it is. When I came back from my weekend away there were over 150 posts. I didn’t have time to read them all but the notifications showed me the one I was tagged in, so I didn’t miss it. Handy.

Funnily enough, the post I was tagged in was by a poster who is a ‘Mhor MN mucker’ and is the only other person on this thread besides LeMar I’ve seen complain about being @ed. Coincidence or conspiracy? Grin

Coincidence.
Yes, I said I say no more - and I realise it's pointless to go on posting about this - but I have to say that I'm starting to feel bullied myself.

RandomPenguinHouse · 03/10/2022 19:09
Hmm

bullied? because I disagreed with you LaMar and corrected you and responded to your comment about why your name stuck out to me, then responded to your replies to my posts? Hmm

Well I don’t want anyone to make anyone feel like that so let’s move on. I’m not sure if you’ve said yet what you think of the extracts and the book (what we know of ‘Courtiers’). Thoughts?

Yes I agree with that about Harry, particularly as his ‘raghead’ comment wasn’t the only one of its kind that he made.

I thought H and M might lie low for a wee while in the hope that KC would make a favourable announcement about A and L’s titles but I see they have had official photos published .
Slightly overshadowing Sophie’s important visit to the DRC and C and C’s first joint official visit .
