I've put the news on today for the first time since Friday. Had constant twitter / news notifications so heard what's happening.

This morning I've heard people say they saw the queen as a second grandmother. They are as upset as they would be if they lost their mum.

People queuing during their night with their primary age kids.

Just seems a bit mad no?

It is all absolute lunacy, like a mass hysteria

Benjispruce4 · 15/09/2022 17:19

Totally batshit! Astounding that so many are so willing to be lorded over by another human being . I was upset when Diana was ‘killed’ in a car accident as she was 37, taken before her time and had young children. Completely different.

Toddlerteaplease · 15/09/2022 17:19

My friend was preaching at the other funeral. Though I'm glad for the family's sake that there has been less media interest.

MarshaBradyo · 15/09/2022 17:19

1952 and 1932 that is

It is beyond farcical now.

How we'll feel by Monday morning with 3 more days of this, goodness knows

Benjispruce4 · 15/09/2022 17:20

The media has a lot to answer for. If people want to pay their respects, that’s absolutely fine but we don’t need wall to wall coverage every single day!!!

sunglassesonthetable · 15/09/2022 17:21

We’re not that different, there were probably people getting put out by the performative neighbours back then too

Twas ever thus 😁

Cornettoninja · 15/09/2022 17:24

is it? Show me a social structure that doesn’t elevate select people to the top with people willingly following them?

I’m not sure it was much better when the most people had was a regular newspaper tbh or even back in the days of word of mouth. We’ve just got more of it.

BorgQueen · 15/09/2022 17:27

DH wanted to go because he saw the Queen as his Boss when he was in the RAF, he did meet her, he also met Charles and Diana and we met Edward and Sophie a few years back at a do at St Pauls. He has a friend who got in the queue at Hms Belfast around 10.00 this morning and has just gone through so I think they are exaggerating the length of time it will take to keep people away. I can’t think of anything worse than shuffling along for 3 miles.

Still seems to be wall to wall football at my house, as always.

know how you feel.

I don't think it's the same as Diana though. The circumstances around her death were tragic, She died early, in a frightening way with a personal life that was bitter and unresolved, leaving two vulnerable young sons with warring relatives, and intrusive paparazzi etc. Everywhere you looked, it was tragic.

The queen lived a long, successful and fulfilled life with a successful partner relationship and most of her children in settled places, with grandchildren and great grandchildren. Everything to celebrate.

KnickerlessParsons · 15/09/2022 17:39

There are three people whose deaths have upset me: my father, Terry Wogan and The Queen.

ImJustMadAboutSaffron · 15/09/2022 17:49

Windowtea · 15/09/2022 09:45

Have you ever seen Evita?

There is a song in that called 'Oh what a circus'. Have a listen to that.

We are facing one of the hardest winters with people in financial dire straits and at risk of starving or freezing to death. Yet all we are talking about is a woman who had the economic and social privilege to allow her to live until 96.

We've all gone crazy
Mourning all day and mourning all night
Falling over ourselves to get all of the misery right ...

Antonio Banderas and David Essex sang that.

I'm really sad she's gone and I feel for the family. I was upset, but I can't imagine myself laying flowers or watching the coffin.

I aqree, this feels much more normal as the celebration of a long life. In the week following Diana's death there was a really tense atmosphere, everyone had an opinion and there was a lot of anger. All the leaving candles and candles etc at Palace gates was completely new (and there were mountains of them)

If MN had existed then I'm pretty sure anyone saying "all this is mad, why is anyone bothered" would have been eviscerated in type, much as people would deny it now.

It does show how powerful the media is and how easily people are influenced on a mass level.
I'm sure this is driven by social media as well as mainstream media.

Yes, this.

Cornettoninja · 15/09/2022 17:53

I must be missing something because I don’t see how QEII’s life isn’t being celebrated. All the coverage I’ve come across is talking about her life and memories. Of course it’s tinged with sadness because, well, she’s just died. That’s just the reaction dying provokes in people.

Diana was off the scale prostrate emotion and anger. The Queens mourning has been far more constrained within the context of her long, fortunate and mostly happy life.

CPL593H · 15/09/2022 17:53

*flowers and candles (etc)

3peassuit · 15/09/2022 17:53

It’s not something I understand but if other people want to mourn for her, that’s their choice.

Benjispruce4 · 15/09/2022 17:55

It is their choice but the media is not my choice. Enough now!

Benjispruce4 · 15/09/2022 17:56

For example why is Mumsnet now black? Totally ott.

MarshaBradyo · 15/09/2022 17:57

I found it hard at the beginning but I’ve managed to avoid it apart from the things I want to see - mainly the procession

I actually found PP harder as radio 6 kept playing dirge music over and over but seem to be more an option this time

Cornettoninja · 15/09/2022 17:58

OTT? They literally just changed the colour! 😂

It’s OTT to call that OTT! They’re not blacking out the website on Monday fgs.

Topseyt123 · 15/09/2022 17:58

I liked the Queen and I'll watch the funeral on Monday. I wish the new King well too.

I would not have any interest at all in queuing for hours to file past the coffin. Other people seem content to do that though and that is their choice.

The death of the Queen is sad, but not tragic in the same way the death of Diana was. At 96, the Queen was a very old lady who had simply come to her natural end. All of her children were grown up, with children and grandchildren of their own.

Diana was still a relatively young woman who met a traumatic and untimely death, leaving behind a 15 year old boy and his 12 year old brother. Big difference and totally opposing circumstances.

Benjispruce4 · 15/09/2022 17:58

@Cornettoninja The monarchy are unelected. No choice for the people.

Bretonbear · 15/09/2022 17:59

It's the amount of people who seem happy to be consider inferior to this woman and her family that is shocking me the most. Just happy to let someone live like that and not question it just because they were born. Crazy.
