Charles and that “bloody” pen

The clip of Charles with the leaking pen is an interesting insight into how the royals behave and how they are treated by their seemingly very obsequious staff. Is Charles’ behaviour reasonable or do you think he’s kicking up an unnecessary fuss? Interested to hear other people’s perspectives really because I’ve never seen a clip like this before.

Are we sure it isn’t a deep fake? Vanilla’s face is hidden by a hat and awful lot.

What’s a deep fake?

Agree he should just use a good old Bic Biro!!

I actually liked seeing the human side of him. He's doing an amazing job and how he's holding it together is just incredible.

The people who are taking potshots at him would do so regardless of what he said or did.

IdiotCreatures · 13/09/2022 21:49

What Horcruxe said.
Or someone should get him one of these for Christmas;

I'd be irritated also.

He's got an incredibly hectic schedule at a time of great loss.

Ink on your hands doesn't seem like a big thing until you remember he's going to be shaking hands/be photographed with other people again very shortly and then attend his mothers funeral. Bear in mind he also has an inflammatory hand condition so having to scrub his hands clean isn't a small thing.

Asking for a functional pen that's not going to cover your (and your wife's hands) in ink in the circumstances isn't a big ask.

In different circumstances he might well have had a different reaction.

I'm definitely not judging him for this one.

hattie43 · 13/09/2022 21:50

Give him a break .
The man has lost his mother and has a punishing schedule with doubtless little sleep . I'm sure most people his age are retired and he has to embark on probably the most intense period of his life .

Novella4 · 13/09/2022 21:52

@Cupofteaonesugar

This is the problem with the UK monarchy .
They set themselves up as the embodiment of the state , so they must sign the papers , wear the crown , etc etc
Normally this works very much in their favour as they can say 'it's not my money it's the 'crown's' when wanting not to pay tax or not have law apply.
Then , when they get caught in a scandal, they can be just a little old man , just like everyone else

2DemisSVP · 13/09/2022 21:53

I wish he hadn’t reacted like that, would be ace if he was unflappable. But when I think of my own much loved father, and how he got angry when he was stressed or nervous, and how the moment would pass and he’d regret his panic , then actually I just feel sympathy for a man who is going through a life changing event at a relatively advanced age. He probably wants everything to be perfect, is aware of the inevitable comparisons , and is just hugely stressed. And in the British Tabloids too. I wouldn’t want to be in his shoes.

Good point, a lot of people are reducing hours etc at that age

Celticandco · 13/09/2022 21:54

Poor man should be at home crying and going over old photo albums in his comfies surrounded by the people he loves right now

😞 so true

Cupofteaonesugar · 13/09/2022 21:54

@daysayso simple as that ey 🙈

BringOnAutumn · 13/09/2022 21:55

Non event. People are looking for anything to criticise.

ParasiticMicrowasp · 13/09/2022 21:56

To be fair, I'd be pissed off if I'd forked out for a Montblanc and it spaffed ink all over me.

Choopi · 13/09/2022 21:56

daysayso · 13/09/2022 21:40

Then he shouldn't accept the role as long, simple

I think he's acting like a twat and it's an embarrassment

Perhaps the people whose job it was to provide a working pen shouldn't be in the role they are in. What an embarrassment to not even be able to provide a pen that works to the King a few days after his mother has died. Seriously poor form on their behalf.

OnTheRunWithMannyMontana · 13/09/2022 21:56

This is a man who has:

Lost his mother less than a week ago

Not been given any time to grieve privately but instead been thrust into the new role immediately

Traveled up and down the country when he is 73 years old and probably just wants to stop and take stock of what's happened in the last few days.

I would probably be pissed off by my new pen leaking on me too.

florenceandthemac · 13/09/2022 21:57

He hasn't stopped since the day his mum died. He is doing every formality that is expected of him. I assume he has people around him to sort out the admin side of things, feed him, have his clothes ready etc while he goes from event to event. Including making sure he has a working pen.
If not, it's not the end of the world. But I suppose he's exhausted

YorkshireIndie · 13/09/2022 21:58

Just watched it and it shows a man who is tired and is stressed and I would get hacked off if my pen was leaking. He is not getting angry at anyone in particular just irritated

Please show me someone who has lost their mother, working from morning till night, touring the country and attending what must feel like a million events and not get pushed over the edge by what is a small thing???

Why was it published?

RosalindsAFuckingNightmare · 13/09/2022 22:00

The paper he signed is a historic document and he was probably annoyed that it may have been spoilt. And having got the date wrong and being told by Camilla he got the date wrong on a document he signed earlier, I think it's quite understandable that he was annoyed. And that's before you bring grief and exhaustion into the equation.

smilesy · 13/09/2022 22:01

When you are tired and stressed as the Kong must be at the moment, little annoyances take on disproportionate significance. Completely understandable. Poor bloke needs a break.

smilesy · 13/09/2022 22:02

King* 😂😂

ZenNudist · 13/09/2022 22:02

If my pen leaked all over my hand and I had to go and shake hands with a bunch of dignitaries and the general public I'd stress out.

Anyone remember the Pope snatching his hand away from the woman who was trying to kiss his ring? Unfortunately people in power are not always serene and perfect. QE2 had years to train for the role. Charles can probably never measure up.

Veeragall · 13/09/2022 22:05

The poor man must be exhausted. His mum died less than a week ago. He's been paraded in public ever since with a gruelling schedule. He's permanently in front of cameras. He's 73 years old.

I know how seismic it was for me when my parents died. Life altering. Heartbreaking. I can't believe so many people have so little sympathy.

Discwriter · 13/09/2022 22:05

I'd probably be drop kicking that pen if it was me. He wasn't angry at a person, his schedule the last couple of days, not even including the immeasurable loss of his mother, is insane. You could see his grief and sadness in St Giles yesterday. He was always a bit more emotive and that's perhaps not bad - I think he's doing great. And I never thought I'd say that about Charles!

Hugasauras · 13/09/2022 22:08

He is not his mother. Nor does he have to be 🤷‍♀️ He was annoyed at a leaky pen. He wasn't rude to anyone or unpleasant to anyone, he just voiced frustration at the pen. I think after so long with the very steady queen and her careful control of her personality so that we never really saw much of it, it's just going to take time to get used to a king who wears his emotions on his sleeve a lot more and always has done.

TheVanguardSix · 13/09/2022 22:09

It’s ridiculous that this is even being circulated.
The poor man deserves more than a free pass. If I had to do what he’s been doing these past few days, there’d be a double funeral. I’d voluntarily climb into my own casket, covered with my hand embroidered FTS flag.
I think he’s bloody amazing.

2pinkginsplease · 13/09/2022 22:10

Why do people feel the need to be nasty and pick up on silly things like this, the poor man has lost his mum, had one day of private mourning and the rest of the time he has been in front of the media, he is 73 and probably frustrated that he hasn’t had a minute to himself.

for what it’s worth I hate Shitty leaky pens too,

give the man a break!
