The royal family

Charles and that “bloody” pen

The clip of Charles with the leaking pen is an interesting insight into how the royals behave and how they are treated by their seemingly very obsequious staff. Is Charles’ behaviour reasonable or do you think he’s kicking up an unnecessary fuss? Interested to hear other people’s perspectives really because I’ve never seen a clip like this before.

@Honeyroar I am so sorry about your dad.
If someone had filmed me lots after my mum and dad died in a car crash this year they would have filmed me looking tearful and distracted, but no they would not have filmed me being impatient or angry at small things. Normal irritants seemed supremely unimportant suddenly. Things that wound other people up around me just washed over me.

I'm so sorry for your horrific loss.

We are all very different on how we react. I was super calm and happy to listen to everyone else's problems etc throughout my late DH's illness. But after he died, I had a lot more in common with the King with regard to my reaction to the tiniest of irritants. And I wasn't subject to being on show all the time, thank goodness.

People were kind enough to give me a pass when I over reacted. So I'm going to hold fire on my perception of the new King for now.

Dinoteeth · 17/09/2022 13:34

That's brilliant with the crowd giving him a pen.

Its must be such a mental mind twist as well, trying to appear being happy celebrating becoming king doing walkabouts one minute and then down doing funeral mourning stuff the next.

ladydoris · 17/09/2022 14:17

Why wasn't it a proper Meistertuck ? Or a good old british pen? Like a good Lamy? That would have been good advertisement for the industry, rather this is a failed moment for the king and for the staff and it's going down history. I hope he has better moments.

ladydoris · 17/09/2022 14:19

It should not have been on TV reruns tbh. Like they do not have enough coverage already.

peridito · 17/09/2022 16:48

Do we know what type of pen it was ?

Perhaps the people whose job it was to provide a working pen shouldn't be in the role they are in. What an embarrassment to not even be able to provide a pen that works to the King a few days after his mother has died. Seriously poor form on their behalf.

Totally agree. If I was in charge of the pen, you’d better believe that would be the best, most high functioning pen I could get my hands on.

peridito · 17/09/2022 17:13

I think it was Charles' own pen . The clip shows him with it in his hand as he approaches the table and before he sits down .

Dinoteeth · 17/09/2022 21:35

I think it was his own pen too, obviously of some sentimental value, but it's probably in the bin now as it's obviously leaked on him before with the statement "every stinking time"

peridito · 18/09/2022 08:19

Yes ,he pockets the pen he uses to sign the Oath at St James'Palace . Didn't seem to leak then .

Thought the way he got his handkerchief out and smartly wiped his hands ,ignoring his wife who was actually the one who got leaked on ,was a charming gesture of old fashioned courtesy .

Charles is well known for his tantrums when things don’t go his way. Camilla has her work cut out, I’d say! In fact, that is why their relationship works because she has the patience of a saint.

@Serenster
We've been over this a lot

Regardless of how cluttered the table was he could have lifted items himself or politely asked

Instead he flapped his hands rudely and childishly at people , bared his teeth ridiculously .
It was clearly habitual behaviour

It was very damaging

Exactly! He also hits the roof if the bath plug isn’t in its correct position and he gets someone to iron his shoelaces every day.

Diana was criticised for the way that she would make toast for royal staff but I think that sort of thing made her more likeable.

JamSandle · 18/09/2022 13:19

He's human. Everyone gets irritated especially when under extreme stress.

How do you know that? Do you have a link to that information?

It’s in his biographies.

Ah. I googled. I don't consider Paul Burrell to be a reliable source at all. The claim about the toothpaste had already been debunked, as only happening when he had an fracture, and wasn't able to use both hands.
Obviously most of us would try to do it anyway and just make a mess, but still, it's not his normal routine.

(And I'm not a royalist, I just dislike fake news and prefer it not to be spread any further than it has to be, even if it's about someone I dislike)

It’s not fake news LMAO. There are a lot of biographies about him and his unusual and fussy behaviour is well known about by many people, not just PB. Paul Burrell worked for him so I can’t see why he would tell lies about him.

Antarcticant · 18/09/2022 14:48

The toothpaste squeezing isn't mentioned by Burrell, but Burrell did describe Charles as shouting and throwing a book across the library during a row about Diana finding out when the Parker Bowles family had been at Highgrove. According to Burrell's account, Charles wholeheartedly apologised to him shortly afterwards.

bellac11 · 18/09/2022 17:00

Im wondering if it will be refreshing to have someone who shows some human foibles and emotions?

notanotheroneagain · 18/09/2022 17:08

The toothpaste and other stories are in a documentary too .

I prefer to have someone with actual emotions.
Not just stiff all the time.
To be honest that's what the queen seemed like a lot to me

Novella4 · 18/09/2022 18:23

That's not emotion

That's spoilt entitlement . HTH

TizerorFizz · 18/09/2022 23:11

I think he’s always been for being spoilt. He charms his way out of situations. No one will want a King who has temper tantrums. No wonder Camilla keeps her own house!

elizaregina · 18/09/2022 23:18

That pen was definitely a bit of a ,"rotter".

What make is it? Pen enthusiast's must surely recognise it?

I only know of mont blanc and cross.

elizaregina · 18/09/2022 23:20

@purpleme12
. same!

Very stiff.
I don't blame her she was of that generation but I'm already warming to Charles a great deal. I might even watch the Xmas lunch address! I find him far more open and accessible..

elizaregina · 18/09/2022 23:21

Bellac ,yes.

I loved that he had a good laugh over the pen when almelme handed him one.
