How do you feel about the RF and monarchy?

Has it changed, do you support more or less

I had a thought that the Queen’s passing might lessen it for me but opposite has happened. I appreciate the historical significance and process

Also if you’re part of Commonwealth (I’m Aus too so am interested) what’s the general vibe about monarchy v republic

So many of these threads now 😂

You know I put this in the royal family section so people who were fed up could ignore it.

no one made you seek it out and respond 😂

hide the board if it irritates you. Easy solution.

I feel they’re a very positive thing for our country.
It seems many people and heads of state around the world respected the Queen and this in turn gave us, as a country a greater standing on the world stage.

Even if our PM (whoever they maybe) isn’t well liked by others the Queen was always much loved and respected. That’s why I feel it’s important we have a non political, decent person for a Head of State.
I’m optimistic about Charles, he seems a genuine person with people’s interests at heart and has done a massive amount for charity and young people.

Precipice · 12/09/2022 14:54

I was an ardent republican before and remain an ardent republican now.

ShandaLear · 12/09/2022 14:58

I’m blah about them. I think they’re unnecessary. They’re really just posh celebrities now, but the peasants enjoy a bit of pageantry and forelock tugging now and again and they give us something to talk about when we’re bored talking of talking about the weather. Benign and expensive.

There's a lot of media spin going on atm in the UK IMO. Initially I was surprised how muted people's responses were to the Queen's death, but that ship has now sailed

Pugdogmom · 13/09/2022 08:34

I didn't mind the Queen as a person. Absolutely no time for rest of them, apart from Princess Anne.
Certainly time IMO to relook at the Monarchy.

Hawkins001 · 13/09/2022 08:36

They are apart of Britain's identity, culture and history.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 13/09/2022 08:42

yes, part of the identify of great britain, all over the world

purplethings · 13/09/2022 08:43

I'm astonished at the level of fawning, sycophantic hysteria around a family who are super privileged, have lives of extraordinary luxury all funded by the tax payers,
whilst we have food banks and homeless, NHS on its knees and an energy crisis, not to mention impending catastrophic global warming and a government intent on investment in fossil fuels. Yet the country has to grind to a halt because the queen dies at 96 and any disent risks arrest.
It actually makes me very angry.

Snugglemonkey · 13/09/2022 08:44

I am a republican and always will be.

bellinisurge · 13/09/2022 08:46

We need to adopt the Irish model of Head of State. Same kind of role as the UK Sovereign without the palava and expense. Highly revered person at a time of uncertainty and division in Ireland. We could have that.
Not some Trump/Macron/Putin wannabe.

SaltyCrisp · 13/09/2022 09:14

I'm ambivalent.
I love the pomp and pageantry.
But ....How can the Queen/King sit comfortably in their castles and palaces when so many of their subjects struggle.

I adore Kate.
But ... the sight of W&K taking their beautiful children to their £50k a year school (surely not each?!) turned my stomach.

I think Charles is going to have to be careful or he'll piss people off.

Mothership4two · 13/09/2022 09:15

So were the Kray twins

Pearock · 13/09/2022 09:17

I like the history and ceremony and really liked the Queen, not fussed on the rest of them bar Anne, Kate and Zara though. I do feel like unless Charles does something magnificent soon support for them will dwindle and they'll trundle on but never make the same impact again. I can't imagine people being as excited to meet anyone as some were for the Queen and some of the luxury does seem disgraceful now.

PAFMO · 13/09/2022 11:31

I liked them before. I like them more now, if possible.
I'm of the generation to have grown up with the older branches, the Kents, the Gloucesters etc.
It's all very interesting.

Mother4two I don’t understand this sentence. Do you mean you thought there was little response to the Queen’s death? What ship has sailed?

HilarityEnsues · 13/09/2022 11:37

I think there will be a honeymoon period for King Charles, orchestrated by the media, but then, as always, they will turn on them. I felt negative before about everyone except the Queen and I feel like that now. Her death hasn't changed anything for me, and I'm amazed it has for so many people.

nancydroo · 13/09/2022 11:50

Fan of Charles camilla William and Kate. Not interested in reading about any of the others and what they are up to.

Farmerazza · 13/09/2022 11:55

I feel they need to change many things if they are to last and remain wanted and popular.
I don't know a single person in my circle who is interested in them or wishes to celebrate any of their events.

StolenWillowTree · 13/09/2022 12:29

Vile and evil. We should get rid of the whole lot asap.

What method do you propose for their removal? Referendum or storming the palace? If the latter, maybe wait a bit as security is heavy round royal residence right now.

MelodyPondsMum · 13/09/2022 12:59

I dislike hereditary privilege but, the last few years with Covid, Boris, the PPE contracts and scandals, etc, mean I have absolutely no faith in the public to elect a head of state or to be able to even keep our assets and contracts in the UK.

On that basis, I've reluctantly decided I'd rather have a monarch. However, I would streamline the monarchy and redistribute most of their wealth and assets. I just don't trust the Tories to redistribute it fairly so I'd rather wait till they're out of power before having these discussions.

you worded it far more politely than I would have. I admire your restraint.
