Charles has just created William Prince of Wales from today. So one question answered. Good decision.

I also was really emotional listening to him speak of Camilla. His love for her was clear to see

TastesLikeFlavourlessFizz · 09/09/2022 19:25

On the Diana title point, I could be wrong but my understanding is that she/someone in her situation loses the THE when the her royal ex remarries. So when Charles married Camilla, she became Diana, Princess of Wales (and would have remained so unless she remarried) but Camilla became Camilla, THE Princess of Wales.

Charles’ speech was perfect. I think he’ll be great as king.

I agree that it makes sense to create William as POW now.

Does it mean anything that he didnt mention Harry's titles and just said he wished them the best with their life abroad?

Remember he also referred to William not using his title.

I have a feeling he wrote that speech, dont know if I've made this up but have always had the sense it had a touch of the spiritual poet about him

He’s always been very artistic, his writing, painting and as a member of the university drama group at Cambridge. He tried his hand at comedy too, riffing on a Goon Show sketch. He does a very good “Bluebottle”!

Viviennemary · 09/09/2022 19:28

I wondered if he woild mention Archie and Lilibet. Not sure if they can just start using the titles Prince and Princess for them. Or will they need the go ahead. Cant see the point of them having titles if they are to spend their lives in the USA. A country which doesnt have titles.

Another one in tears. I have always liked Charles. I think he is a good man at heart.
He did tremendously well to keep it together

MarshaMelrose · 09/09/2022 19:28

I think what Tierne meant is that Harry didn't get any new titles and no mention of titles for his children.
Sorry if that's not what you meant, Tierne.

Tierne · 09/09/2022 19:29

That is what I meant Marsha! But apparently PP says he doesnt get upgraded as he isnt an heir and is already a duke

TrashyPanda · 09/09/2022 19:29

Yes! He should do the CBeebies bedtime story. Also a Winnie the Pooh audiobook.

I think he recorded his own book, the Old Man of Lochnagar. Or read it on Jackanory.

He also said he loved them.

Charles didn't become Prince of Wales til he was 20. And he was 3 when the Queen became the Queen.

Charles became Prince of Wales in 1958. He was 20 when the investiture was held. It was the first in many, many years and isn’t an absolute necessity - you can have the title without the investiture.

FeatherBlower · 09/09/2022 19:33

Charles has long been my favourite royal for many reasons. I hope people give him a chance, I think many will find him a good monarch, possibly just as good as his mother, albeit his will be a much shorter reign. Hopefully this will also be an opportunity to mend some issues within the family.

People go on about the privilege that the royal family has, but it’s not a job I’d like. The scrutiny, the lack of freedom. Yes it has much luxury, but it also has many negatives that I’d not like. I’d rather have the little money I have and my freedom and privacy than their riches and life serving the public. I’m a socialist but I’m a royalist too. It’s time like these where they can show us what they can really do.

Blossomtoes · 09/09/2022 19:35

An amazing speech. How he got through that I’ll never know. What a tough day he’s had and how brilliantly he’s acquitted himself.

VladmirsPoutine · 09/09/2022 19:35

I feel like we were rushed into it. We didn't get to have a national debate about the future of the monarchy. We should have had a referendum about abolition.

Tierne · 09/09/2022 19:37

@VladmirsPoutine
Only a fifth of people want abolition, we arent going to have a referendum on a fringe view

Maltester71 · 09/09/2022 19:40

He’s totally won me over.

i felt so heartbroken for him. On many levels.

. . . really 🙄

theveg · 09/09/2022 19:41

@VladmirsPoutine there can't have been a vacuum or interregnum. It has to be seamless, that is the whole point of constitutional monarchy.

I think we are lucky to live in a country where such an event doesn't result in chaos and unrest.

Also don't you think we've had enough referendums in recent years to see how divisive and poisonous they are? I don't think we should ever be given a yes/no referendum again, it has torn us apart.

I agree- he addressed, subtly, the concerns about the monarchy being out of touch- a very well put together speech , delivered so well in the circumstances, Harry and Megan being mentioned was a nice touch.

And I bet an overwhelming majority would vote to keep it despite the republicans who are very vocal on mumsnet, it’s not popular to say you support the monarchy on here as you get name called as a sycophant so many keep quiet, but if it went to the polls the status quo would remain, in fact I think support for the monarchy would get stronger.

If that's case, I apologise but what I said still holds true. That he didn't automatically get the title when he became heir. He had to wait several years before it was given to him. (TBF, he was very little when he became heir. )

asblindasabat · 09/09/2022 19:44

Do we not get to call Camilla ‘Princess Camilla’ ?

Please God no! we had one referendum which completely divided the country and after the last three years and now losing the Queen the U.K. needs stability not another divisive referendum.

asblindasabat · 09/09/2022 19:45

Oh sorry, would it not be Queen Camilla? I was basing my last post on the fact Philip was Prince Philip and not King Philip.
