Charles has just created William Prince of Wales from today. So one question answered. Good decision.

I think you're right, @SpinCityBlues.
He was the voice of unity and conciliation.

I agree, I've met him and had an actual discussion with him, his voice is something I noticed, even in general discussion it's quite a reassuring voice but it's still an air of authority about it.

He's very good at engaging people too and he's rather funny, he likes to crack a joke.

I'm nothing special though I don't have like a big important job or anything 😂, he came to visit a building I was managing and it was a grade 1 listed building and he wanted to talk about the buildings history and the restoration work we were doing at the time that's all.

darmaka · 10/09/2022 11:32

Kate should not use this title in respect for Diana.

It wasn't Diana's title. It is the title of the wife of the Prince of Wales.

Diana has been dead over 20 years! You must know that she knew her son William would become prince of Wales one day and his wife princess. She would have wanted it. It's her son's destiny.

It’s the voice of rich people. They usually have an air of authority and self confidence. It’s very noticeable in private schools v state schools.

Maireas · 10/09/2022 11:36

Yes, Diana was an aristocrat to her finger tips. Also a monarchist.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 10/09/2022 11:37

Diana was never the only princess of wales

It's been a quarter of a century.

Time to move on.

Exactly - her mother in law. Camilla did not use it out of respect. I imagine Kate isn't the same.

Let Diana rest now. The title is Catherine's. We're many years on.

Haha don't ruin it for me 😭😂

I've not met many "rich" people so couldn't draw a comparison. If someone wins £500 at the local bingo night that's seen as wealth in this area 😂

This. It’s time to put the past where it belongs and look to the future. I like the idea of a new Princess of Wales.

Narcheska · 10/09/2022 11:50

But Camilla didn’t use it because she was the OW and knew it would be viewed as disrespectful to use it. Unless I’m mistaken Kate hasn’t shagged Charles so I can’t understand why it would be disrespectful to a title that is rightfully hers as the wife of Diana’s beloved son 🤯

FoggyCrumpet · 10/09/2022 12:04

Even if Diana was still alive there'd have been a shuffling around of titles, maybe Dowager would be in there somewhere, Prince William would be the new Prince of Wales and Catherine the new Princess of Wales.

Diana was no longer THE Princess of Wales, she was Diana, Princess of Wales.
There's a difference.

I don't think she would have been 'dowager' as that only applies to a widow. As far as I know, the divorced wife of someone with a title simply retains the title unless she marries again. If the title holder marries before his ex-wife, both wife and ex wife have the title.

Before Diana died, there was talk of her being Queen even though divorced - that was where the 'Queen of Hearts' thing sprung from - she was asked in the famous interview if she wanted to be queen and she replied 'I want to be Queen of Hearts ... Queen of people's hearts'.

I think in all probability she would have remarried by now, had she lived. I can't imagine Charles would have wanted her as Queen alongside Camilla, so she might have been allowed to retain 'Diana, Princess of Wales' as a courtesy title, or she could always have reverted to 'Lady Diana'.

WinnieTheW0rm · 10/09/2022 12:13

She would have remained Diana, Princess of Wales for life - that was settled at the time of her divorce.

It would only have changed if she had remarried, and which point she would have become Lady Diana Mrs Bloggs or taken the spousely version of her new husband's title if he had one

IcedPurple · 10/09/2022 12:14

Not exactly.

If Charles had married Camilla during Diana's lifetime, she would have been HRH The Princess of Wales, whether or not she chose to use it. Whereas Diana would have been Diana, Princess of Wales. Not 'the' Princess of Wales. Subtle but important difference.

SenecaFallsRedux · 10/09/2022 12:41

Regarding the Scottish titles, didn't Charles also hold the title "Lord of the Isles"? I love that one.

I agree. If I were Kate, I would want to go around calling myself "Lady of the Isles."

As for the title Princess of Wales; it is Catherine's now, and she should certainly use it.

SenecaFallsRedux · 10/09/2022 12:44

I have often thought that if Diana had lived, on William's accession, he might have considered making her a princess of the UK, so she would have been HRH Princess Diana. That would have been a way of elevating her and removing Princess of Wales title at the same time.

That's an interesting thought, Seneca. I would think she would have remarried and been Lady Diana Khan (or whatever). However, I do think, with time, there would have been some sort of rapprochement with Charles and Diana.

I think it was Paul Burrell who quoted the young William saying, when Diana lost her HRH, 'Don't worry, mummy, when I am King I will give it back to you' - so he clearly intended to when he was a child.

Dowager would only have applied if she had been widowed.

Had she stayed alive and not remarried she’d have stayed as Diana, Princess of Wales until her death.

We all say things when we are children without knowing the implications and complications of them. Quoting a child’s words thirty years later is really not relevant.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 10/09/2022 12:58

Queen Caroline became Queen Consort, even though they were estranged, but fell ill and died, a divorced not being allowed.

Well, you might just as well argue the whole discussion is 'not relevant' as Diana died 25 years ago. It's a conversation, not a statement of policy.
