A positive and non-bashing thread about Meghan and Harry

I have rejoined Mumsnet after leaving a few times. The first time I left was because I was concerned about the coverage and uncomfortable undertone of the commentary on Meghan Markle after the engagement was announced, before she had said a word, and before she had married into the Royal Family.

I came back around the time she and Harry left the UK, to be stunned by the pages and pages upon pages of virulent threads. At that time Mumsnet actually banned all threads about Meghan, it had become so toxic.

They have now made their lives in Montecito, but still the virulence continues. Yes, she speaks in a mix of therapy plus corporate gobbledegook, yes, she is occasionally vapid and irritating.

But who is she actually harming that she deserves all this virulence?

Yesterday, when the new UK Prime Minister was elected, the coverage in the Super Tory Daily Mail was all about a seven minute speech to a bunch of young people. Article after article after article. Body language experts. Counting the number of times she said "I" in a speech in which she sought to inspire young people by attempting to relate to them. Before that, 18 articles were devoted to the first podcast by the Daily Mail alone. 18!

Same with her podcasts. The series is about HER and HER take on labels, and she discusses HER take with HER guests.

It's all very anodyne, even vanilla. It does not deserve any of the vitriol sent her way.

SO:

As the next twelve weeks are going to be wall to wall Meghan, and the Meghan haters and detractors have several threads here that fill up rapidly with bile, scorn and mockery, I have started this thread, reminiscent of previous " positive" threads, to talk about what some of us like, enjoy, find amusing and even (gasp) admire, in the next few Meghan rich weeks.

If you don't have anything positive to say, that's okay, you can keep to the existing threads.

Looking forward to a bile-free discussion of everything Meghan!

I agree with @OneFootintheRave @Fishpawsandchips and @Roussette

I think she delivered on the brief last night: One Young World is essentially the Davos World Economic Forum for youngsters, its all about global networking and "inspirational" inner power and visualising gobleydegook and on that score, she delivered with a well-intentioned speech, "you are the moment, the moment is now", etc. I think she connected well with her "girl from Suits" comment, like I said, I am fascinated when women talk of their own experiences of imposter syndrome.

And yes she looked elegant and chic.

There's a Daily Mail headline being mocked on Twitter saying Meghan "PILED on the jewellery". Translation: "woman wore earrings and a ring!!"

It's utterly psychopathic that the Meghan bashers are so fixated on hating some random celeb they'll never meet that they simply cannot tolerate anyone having a positive or even neutral opinion on her, but feel driven to seek out anyone being positive about her to forcibly re-educate them.

I can't imagine letting obsessive hate rule my whole life like that.

Nor me.

I've said many a time... there are a couple of famous people I just cannot abide. They pop up on threads on MN from time to time. I deliberately swerve them, I don't post about them, I don't take much notice of the press about them. They just don't interest me at best... at worst they really annoy me. So I avoid.

However... for those that like that particular person, or are not averse to them at all, I would not post for years trying to make them hate that person. Because I do.

I do think Meghan is bullied in the press, on here, everywhere basically. Do I think she should not be criticised? No. Sometimes he and she are tone deaf and don't get it right at all. But are they bad people? No. Do they deserve the vile slurs thrown at them every minute of the day? No.

notanotheroneagain · 06/09/2022 12:47

Oh hello OP.
Thanks for opening up a supportive thread.
I will be here a lot when I have time. Ignore the hateful ones who want to derail. Happy to see people come on and show their support though.

Iamacatslave · 06/09/2022 13:09

@MrsMaxDeWinter I say it about every royal thread.

notanotheroneagain · 06/09/2022 13:14

All this concentrated bashing of one woman is not a good look for the UK. Nor for MN who are supposed to be a mum support space.
The British press makes sure not to publicise all the good work H&M do and will instead pick apart anything.

In Germany the crowds are waiting, and I will go listen to the podcast.

They have arrived in Germany.

From 20-23mins is when they arrive. Chants from the crowd 'Harry'. Lovely to see other countries not being so bitter.

Meghan has achieved so much in her life, through sheer grit, determination and talent. She is a role model for working mothers all over the world, as she has demonstrated how to juggle parenthood with a full-time challenging career. She is thoughtful, kind and caring to everyone she comes into contact with, and she has a fantastic loving relationship with her family including her in-laws. She values the important things in life (friends, family, nature) and has no time for the superficial and material. She values her privacy and avoids self-promotion, there are many a charity that have benefited from her hard work and we will never hear about them. As a committed environmental activist, she lives by example and does not needlessly waste the planet's resources on expensive travel, large residences and an extensive wardrobe. Instead she lives a simple but meaningful life and is an inspiration to us all.

I hope this is in the spirit of this thread.

Roussette · 06/09/2022 13:38

Pathetic post.

Maybe look to the RF who we do pay for?

HillyBillyBumkin · 06/09/2022 13:40

It is nice to have a space that is more positive and accepting. Whatever your thoughts on Harry and Meghan they should be able to live their life without being harassed. And I should be able to read about what they are up to without any damaging bias. So thanks for this thread. It's a breath of fresh air.

This made me howl with laughter, .

I take my last comment back. This place isn't going to be a calm space is it?

This is so sad .

Well I’m a negative Nancy in that I dislike both the RF and Meghan.

The RF because I think the idea of ‘royalty’ is ridiculous in 2022 for a plethora of reasons.

Meghan because she’s a giant hypocrite who spent a huge quantity of our cash then buggered off without so much as a nice knowing you.

Wouldloveanother · 06/09/2022 14:32

Oh and the Mandela comment was cringingly awful

Cameleongirl · 06/09/2022 14:33

The problem with selling your soul to the corporate devil is that you have to keep creating new noise to justify the payout. He who pays the piper calls the tune.

This is the dilemma, isn’t it. They’ve signed various deals and it’s become obvious that any dirt they can dish on the RF is what sells. So they have to keep dishing. I wish them well and I hope they can move on from the memoirs and talk of journals.
It’ll be much better for them.

darmaka · 06/09/2022 14:35

Soontobe60 · 06/09/2022 08:06

Do you really think people dislike her because she’s ‘female and mixed race’? Do you think everyone who dislikes her is right wing? Maybe everyday regular people who are NOT racist misogynistic right wing voters just dislike the facade she wears.

Yes that is the MAIN reason. As a foreign and brown person - I can attest to this. Sad but true.

lemmein · 06/09/2022 15:12

Agree with you OP. I genuinely don't understand the hate directed at them. There's plenty of people in the public eye I don't particularly like, but then I don't read stories about them, or listen to their speeches/interviews - but Meghan haters seem to seek her out to pick apart every tiny detail - I don't get it.

I also don't understand why she has so much stick for not getting on with the IL's - on MUMSNET of all places! Of course she's going to bite back if shit is leaked to the press by her husbands family, why on earth wouldn't she? If she was a MN poster people would've told her to go NC from the get-go, but because it's the royals she's expected to put up and shut up (and curtsy 🙄)

The main thing that concerns me about the Meghan hate though is it epitomises how much influence the tabloids have in this country. They have swathes of people hating on one woman for....well, what? Being a bit annoying? It's relentless and toxic AF. There's no point having elections in the UK; might as well cut out the expense and let Murdoch unilaterally decide.

So what if they use their titles? So what if they get zillions off Netflix? So.fucking.what? 🥱

Both of them in Germany. I absolutely love her outfit. Peach palazzo silky pants and high necked cut away top.
Harry is not long away from having to deal with his hair, he looks a lot more balding.
They seemed to be getting a really warm reception

Roussette · 06/09/2022 15:17

I have said this before on MN and have had my arse handed to me on a plate for daring to suggest such a thing. It's true about her ghastly father and half sister too

Cameleongirl · 06/09/2022 15:28

I don’t care if they make zillions

I am not particularly interested in Harry and Meghan as I am a republican but I really am uncomfortable when anyone (not just Meghan - it was Emily Maitlis a week or so ago) is subjected to harsh and seemingly endless criticism in the right wing press. I don't know much about her articles or podcasts as I haven't read or listened to them but I think something is very wrong when one person is singled out for constant criticism which is out of proportion to their activities. Especially when that person is (a,) female and (b) mixed race. There is a tipping point which at a certain moment swings from fair and reasonable comment to bullying and that point has already been reached imho.

I totally agree with this.

ScarlettnotOHara · 06/09/2022 15:36

Must be awful for poor Meghan to cope sat in one of many luxury homes ! She knew the score before she married into the royal family. Telling tales to make money , nothing else! Have some sympathy for people struggling to feed and clothe their children, not her!

Sympathy is not a finite quantity in most people. It's possible to have sympathy for the poor, but also for others. Well it is for me, anyway.

Normandy144 · 06/09/2022 15:43

I like Meghan. I think she's had a very hard time by the press and I'm not quite sure when it all turned on her. The daily mail is awful - such double standards in the way they talk about Kate/William in comparison to her and Harry is shameful. We've allowed ourselves to be manipulated into disliking her.
