A positive and non-bashing thread about Meghan and Harry

I have rejoined Mumsnet after leaving a few times. The first time I left was because I was concerned about the coverage and uncomfortable undertone of the commentary on Meghan Markle after the engagement was announced, before she had said a word, and before she had married into the Royal Family.

I came back around the time she and Harry left the UK, to be stunned by the pages and pages upon pages of virulent threads. At that time Mumsnet actually banned all threads about Meghan, it had become so toxic.

They have now made their lives in Montecito, but still the virulence continues. Yes, she speaks in a mix of therapy plus corporate gobbledegook, yes, she is occasionally vapid and irritating.

But who is she actually harming that she deserves all this virulence?

Yesterday, when the new UK Prime Minister was elected, the coverage in the Super Tory Daily Mail was all about a seven minute speech to a bunch of young people. Article after article after article. Body language experts. Counting the number of times she said "I" in a speech in which she sought to inspire young people by attempting to relate to them. Before that, 18 articles were devoted to the first podcast by the Daily Mail alone. 18!

Same with her podcasts. The series is about HER and HER take on labels, and she discusses HER take with HER guests.

It's all very anodyne, even vanilla. It does not deserve any of the vitriol sent her way.

As the next twelve weeks are going to be wall to wall Meghan, and the Meghan haters and detractors have several threads here that fill up rapidly with bile, scorn and mockery, I have started this thread, reminiscent of previous " positive" threads, to talk about what some of us like, enjoy, find amusing and even (gasp) admire, in the next few Meghan rich weeks.

If you don't have anything positive to say, that's okay, you can keep to the existing threads.

Looking forward to a bile-free discussion of everything Meghan!

Strange that you say it was attacks on individuals

I see it as attacks on the whole corrupt system .
Funny how royals are individuals when it suits.

They are both - individuals and systems. H & M used this conflation selectively to, at various times, attack both the individual (the Queen may be the racist one) and the 'system' (the whole country and institutions over which you preside are racist). They did this to become celebrities and make money. They did not do it because they care about the actual debate. If they truly cared about racism, they would not have chosen a talk show to deliver their message. They would have sought out other outlets for this debate where it will be taken seriously. As it is, they knew that they could hide behind the conflation of individualism and institutionalism that the RF represents in order to take pot shots at them one by one under the guise of 'shining a light' on a system. Issues of identity that go into making up inequality are a game to them, to be used for their own ends.

My point about being individuals when it suits and this invented 'sovereign' when it suits them ( clue : it changes when tax or law may be applied to them) applies to the whole rotten corrupt system - as well you know . It's been highlighted enough on other threads

As for H and Meghan
-they haven't said much at all yet.

I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt . The fear and hatred that they provoke in royalists does make me hopeful however

I find your post pretty sick actually. Not 24 hours has gone by since the Queen died and you can't let up with the constant attacks on a member of her family.
You are using her death as a means to do that.

If that's correct, I wonder if William, Andrew and Edward made it in time.
It's said they touched down at Aberdeen around 3pm, and with the onward journey to Balmoral it would have been tight, so maybe they just held off informing the PM until all the siblings were there

They’re not responsible for her death, but they did cause grief while alive (and they were not alone in that), but I think she was always trying to find a way back for them into the family.
