With another podcast set for release this week, The Sunday Times has a piece addressing Harry and Meghan's apparent strategy:

Courtiers are bemused by the Sussexes’ determination to rage against the past. As Davis observed of Meghan in her article: “She has taken a hardship and turned it into content.” A source who knows the Sussexes questions why Meghan “is constantly looking back at how awful it was to briefly be a royal. What does success look like, is it a number in the bank? Is it that they’ve killed off the monarchy?” Another Palace source says: “Ultimately they are bashing the institution that has put them in the position they’re in, the longevity of that strategy is not sustainable.”

www.thetimes.co.uk/article/harry-and-meghan-keep-bashing-the-monarchy-because-its-good-business-royals-believe-nq29p6g7z

I'm curious about their strategy, too. They seem to think that criticizing the royal makes them look better - it really doesn't. Instead, it just makes them look petty and increasingly irrelevant.

We don’t have any employees who earn over £60k
I’m trying to bring in extra funding to give my staff an increase to help with cost of living crisis at present

Thanks - I’m sure I must have missed something…

Apparently they pay their CEO £326,000 and her daughter £166,050.
Almost half a million out of an income of less than £2million.

'Charity begins at home' is fairly apt it would appear.

Actually I think he does really adore her and he doesn’t begrudge her the attention- I think he just hates having to do all this fake docuseries filming to earn a living. But who knows.

Yes I think that’s right actually

NoName2223 · 05/09/2022 23:23

I’m definitely too old for all this shite but it seems to be this kind of a biz model:

  • charge young people a fortune to attend an event
  • organise the event and rope in some big names as speakers
  • at least one of the speakers will use the fact that they are a speaker as key content for their own product (Netflix docu) for which they are paid millions, so it’s of huge benefit to them to volunteer their time
  • the attendees - having paid thousands - then get to bask in the praise of said speaker who tells them they are amazing and they are the present future tense or some such guff
  • everyone goes home happy in the knowledge that they have born witness to embracing global change and their time is now (or was then or something)
  • no one gets drunk or has a laugh as that would not be cool as everyone is too busy having a positive impact on the global community (although at 3k a pop I’d be expecting champagne myself)
  • nothing changes for actual poor people
God help us all.

I suspect this outing is designed to appear in the documentary as the redemption moment when all the mean people realise what they lost.

I think so too

Puzzledandpissedoff · 05/09/2022 23:26

“The price per Delegate place is £3,150.00, this includes physical (in-person), remote (in-person at a satellite location), or virtual attendance (by online broadcast). The price is £4,210.00 for physical (in-person) attendance with private accommodation. All prices are subject to the local taxes of the city hosting the Summit (“Host City”), and all payments must be made in Great British Pounds (GBP). The price does not include any flights or other transportation to or from the Summit, which You must arrange at Your own cost.”

Bloody hell Shock Shock

For that I'd have wanted to hear a bit more actual content and less word salad, but I realise it's fashionable and the presentation was excellent (though TBF she was an actress ...)

bitachey · 05/09/2022 23:31

Wow that’s sickening if that’s right. Something wrong there.

Also I only saw excerpts but she doesn’t half talk about herself a lot. She’s only famous through marriage. Surely she should be talking about the young people not herself (again!) Self promoting all the time.

Do you think Harry ever has moments where he thinks “oh fuck”, about this circus.

ArcaneLana · 05/09/2022 23:34

I find it very hard to believe that the that Nelson Mandela and Kofi Annan as well as many others would be a part of an organization that doesn’t do anything to benefit young people from
all over the world.

What do they do then? Not snipping just generally curious. I mean if they just hold events its a certain type of engagement.

HeddaGarbled · 05/09/2022 23:45

This was just the keynote speech. There’ll be educational workshops and networking events as well. The attendees will be being sponsored, not paying the costs themselves.

If you’re a young person doing good work in your own country, it could be a really special thing to be sent to something like this where you get to meet other young activists and get access to workshops etc to support you with the work you’re doing at home.

I don’t begrudge them a little taste of foreign travel and glamour and excitement and praise. I think it’s a good thing. It’s acknowledging what they do and helping them to be more effective and perhaps not give up when it gets hard.

Whether the bosses should be taking such a large cut of the income is a different matter and I don’t know enough about what’s normal in the charity sector and what they have to do to earn that salary to comment.

ArcaneLana · 05/09/2022 23:47

Just a quick look at their website I notice they provide different scholarships
and provided funds to young people during the corona virus pandemic . I actually admire how the organization being young people from different cultures together as seen today.

NoName2223 · 05/09/2022 23:49

The charity doesn’t provide the scholarships - they rely on others (corporates etc) to do that. So the charity makes 3k per attendee regardless. It’s all there on their own website.

Thanks for explaining it better. I agree that it’s a great opportunity for many young people attending to network as well as have experience of different host countries.

It says it's for young leaders but anyone can pay to go. They pay to attend where they get mentored. And then their attendance makes them an Ambassador. Maybe it's just me but it all seems content light and empty business phrases. It just networking.

We are One Young World, empowering and developing young leaders to build a fair, sustainable future for all.

Our annual One Young World Summit brings together young leaders representing 190+ countries and 250+ organisations, to confront the biggest challenges facing humanity.

Delegates spend four life-changing days of networking, and knowledge-sharing. Together we raise the bar for what social impact we can make individually and as a community.

Throughout the Summit, Delegates are counselled by influential political, business, and humanitarian leaders such as Justin Trudeau, Ariana Huffington and Professor Muhammad Yunus, among many other global figures.

But this is just the start. Every leader who attends our Summit becomes a One Young World Ambassador and a valued member of our global community. This is a lifelong membership to one of the most incredible networks in the world, with access to mentorship, events, speaking engagements and funding opportunities.

We are the global community for young leaders. Together, we are One Young World.

It claims they get counselled by these amazing people. But actually they don't counsel, they just give a talk and "share insights".

Counsellor: a world-renowned leader, or high profile individual who speaks at our Summit, sharing their insights and using their spotlight to inspire our Community to take action. Counsellors include Justin Trudeau, Meghan Markle, Professor Muhammad Yunus and the late Kofi Annan.

However it does seem that they do worthy projects but what does "generate social value" mean?

Ambassador projects have directly impacted over 35.8 million people since 2010. In 2021 alone they generated over $558 million social value.

I'm sort of disappointed. I just posted that I thought that leadership projects are ideal.for them because the pair of them seem to appeal to young people. But is this just seems like an expensive networking opportunity.

Unfortunately it seems to be par for the course for lots of “foundations” and charities these days. There is huge! money being passed around but it’s not like charities of old where the goal was to get help to the most needy. It’s all fluff and insta and profile and word salad and big salaries and media deals. Real charity work isn’t glamourous.

Ommommomm · 05/09/2022 23:59

I find Meghan’s voice too cultivated and fake.

she tries too hard.

No, it until. I used to work for a charity. I used to rattle a box and sell old clothes. The money was earmarked for desperate stuff nd practically spent before we'd even raised it. Lots of people volunteered and they do such valuable abd valued work.
Our aims were clear as was where the money was spent.
I just don't get what this organisation does or how it judges its success. What is $558m social value? What does it mean in practical terms?

I have no idea either. It shouldn’t be that hard for them to explain what they do.

Ommommomm · 06/09/2022 00:31

Watching the footage of Meghan’s speech and Harry’s reaction I think he is beginning to twig that she is pure cringe

MarshaMelrose · 06/09/2022 00:43

I can't agree. I think Harry really loves her. I don't think he's always into her wanting to touch him all the time. But he's put his whole world into being with her and whatever he might feel in the future, I believe he genuinely loves her at this point in time. And for his children's sake, I hope, as I would for any family, that it stays that way.

MarshaMelrose · 06/09/2022 00:56

I found this explanation for social value. I think the UK govt now requires it as part of their tendering process.

Leaders deploy a wide range of actions which make a real difference to people’s lives. This might include awarding contracts to local suppliers, donating to public realm projects, providing staff to volunteer for good causes, hiring apprentices, or giving prisoners work experience for a second chance at life.

So it's a bit like my local co-op giving to local causes. But how does this charity trace it back to themselves? It's very interesting. They're registered in London so they're genuine and will be audited by the Charity Commission. They started in 2010. I'd never heard of them. I guess that's the point of MM. Because I have now! Lol. Good for them.

I agree. I can't watch/listen to more than a minute or two of her, she makes me cringe and I suspect that's a big part of why she is disliked so much by so many. She just seems so contrived. I absolutely loved the idea of her right up till I watched the engagement interview.

Luckily you don't have to then! I thought she was great and she received rapturous applause (said the news I watched,)

She was amongst good company..

Other counsellors addressing the summit included: Sir Bob Geldof, who spoke about the dangers of nationalism; the former Irish president Mary Robinson, who spoke on leadership; and the Greater Manchester mayor, Andy Burnham.
