Meghan's long-awaited podcast has launched. Sorry if there's a thread about this already. Has anyone listened to it yet? Thoughts?

@AdriannaP Yes I get that you think not "moaning" or "whinging" are high virtues.
I think treating people decently matters.

VivaMazVegas · 25/08/2022 10:07

Yikes, I just listened and have turned entirely inside out with cringing embarrassment. Have they no self awareness at all? Just awful. What on earth was Serena W thinking??

LondonWolf · 25/08/2022 10:08

antelopevalley · 25/08/2022 10:00

@LondonWolf The comment just above you? "PP did a lot of good . His attitudes were of his time and upbringing."
Absolutely does say he was of his time so it was fine.

He did come across as a nasty man. His racism and misogyny were incredibly blatant. And he was also incredibly rude time and time again. In my experience decent nice people do not behave in that way.

I think it only says it's "ok" if you want it to, which you obviously do. To me it's a possible explanation to some of his behaviours, nuance, looking beyond the blunt, dismissive one note assertion of "nasty racist!" Are we to pretend he didn't do more good than bad because he made some offensive comments and held outdated beliefs and individuals such as yourself don't like their fairly recently developed positions being challenged?

Personally I like, discussion, nuance and introducing new ideas and facts to a discussion to build a bigger picture, without that being dismissed as unquestioning sympathising or acceptance.

@antelopevalley

i don’t many decent people who wear Nazi costumes for laughs and use nasty racist names towards colleagues like Harry did ?

Ohnonevermind · 25/08/2022 10:10

Most people I know trust and care for their pets, Meghan’s dog hated Harry so instead of giving Harry his marching orders she dumped the dog.

I’m guessing she won’t be sharing that anecdote on her podcast, instead how she adopted a new dog called ‘mamma Mia’ which is such a great name because meghan is great

NorthernMountainCaribou · 25/08/2022 10:11

I listened to it. Was not as bad as I was expecting. In some way I always feel a little uncomfortable during her 'talks'. There is just something that feels inauthentic, like it is contrived.

It is the difference between watching acting and documentary, you can just tell the difference. That is the feeling I get. Maybe it is just trying too hard I don't know.

She would do far better focussing more on the guests than herself. Where she does focus on herself, it would come over better if she was more self deprecating (less self satisfied). Maybe though this is just the culture class others have talked about. In the US they welcome self aggrandisement - cheerleading for yourself.

I also thing the US loves 'earnestness' far more than the British - who typically find it cringeworthy.

Indeed. What a good thing Meghan managed to overcome such overt displays of racism and fall in love with and marry such a man. In fact what a good thing the majority of the public were able to overcome them and understand that he was young and foolish and likely damaged by his traumatic childhood and so were therefore able to continue to feel supportive and affectionate towards him.

What? 😆

Ohnonevermind · 25/08/2022 10:18

London - I’m guessing she won’t be talking about how her original dog bogart didn’t like Harry so she dumped the dog.

i’m guessing that anecdote won’t appear in her podcasts

Ohnonevermind · 25/08/2022 10:19

@LondonWolf

yes, she managed to overlook his racism, his wealth and title and connections
had nothing to do with it 🤣

LondonWolf · 25/08/2022 10:20

No, I understand, it was the Mamma Mia but I was laughing it. I hadn't heard about this.

AlexandriasWindmill · 25/08/2022 10:21

I related to MM's point about schooling encouraging you to aim high but then people in RL acting as though ambition is a negative for women. I think she has been criticised for being pushy and ambitious.

I was surprised SW said she wouldn't have gone to work if there was a minor fire on a different floor from her DC. I genuinely don't think she'd have missed a match in those circumstances.

My biggest issue is that no-one at Spotify or on the podcast seems to understand what 'archetype' actually means. I cringed every time it was used incorrectly in the publicity for this too. Fgs it's the name of the series - someone print out the dictionary definition and stick it to the wall.

Ohnonevermind · 25/08/2022 10:22

were these gems in finding freedom ?

’she was able to see the man behind the Prince’ 🤣🤣😜

she wasn’t interested in the man he was but the man he could become

AdriannaP · 25/08/2022 10:23

@antelopevalley I live in a Palace, have designer clothes and amazing jewellery, staff for every need, access to the best obstetricians and doctors for my needs, a husband who loves me but my SIL made ME cry at a dress fitting. Boohoo poor me, my life is awful, why is everyone so mean 😢 Oprah save me from the awful Brits who are all
so mean and racist.

AdriannaP · 25/08/2022 10:25

And have I mentioned that nobody asked ME how I was and how I was feeling? Why does nobody care about ME ME and ME

MangshorJhol · 25/08/2022 10:25

@antelopevalley So I have lived in the US since 2002. I live in a very large city. We are both middle class professionals. I am an academic, DH is a physician scientist. Literally no one in my friend/work circle has heard of the podcast or plans to listen to it. I was asking some of my students and most haven’t heard of them and this is not the kind of celebrity stuff they are into. (Tom and Zendaya, yes. Harry and Meghan, not so much). We have some truly global celebrities in the US. The new Netflix thing with Chelsea and Hillary- that’s big news, even among people who hate them. I think MM (and Harry) have a lot less cache in the US celebrity scene than people think. (Have they ever walked the red carpet at the Oscars or the Met Gala?).
I bet as a proportion of the population more people in Britain will listen to this podcast even if only because they want to mock it.

MangshorJhol · 25/08/2022 10:29

There is a sort of quaint interest in the BRF and lots of people watched the Oprah interview. Some felt sorry for her. Lots of people were baffled why Harry needed his dad’s money in his 40s. The ‘we are going to stand on our own two feet’ is not the dramatic declaration it is in the UK. I think the reaction was more of…’yes and?’

I like reading British news (I did my UG degree there) and you guys are significantly more into H&M than anyone in the US is…here they are one of many celebrities with ridiculous lives.

LondonWolf · 25/08/2022 10:53

We often seem to be living in post truth times. Perhaps this means that the definitions of words can be stretched and adapted to suit the user? "My Truth" and all that.

Ohnonevermind · 25/08/2022 10:58

@LondonWolf

i don’t want to live in post truth times. I want the real truth to matter.

Same.

Maireas · 25/08/2022 11:07

I'd like to hear Meghan interview Princess Anne. She was an Olympian - plus a successful Eventer - lots of ambition, drive and determination there. She really broke the mold of expectations for Royal ladies. Plus the kidnapping story is extraordinary - I heard her account of it many years ago.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 25/08/2022 11:19

With all this racism stuff surrounding her surely it was probably not a good idea to make fun of English accents?

Save your breath, ittakes2, unless you want a lecture about colonialism, privilege and all the rest

Personally I think it's a bit rude to mock anyone's accent, no matter where it's from, but then I also wondered about Harry choosing Serena's hair for comment.
Isn't that supposed to be risky territory when the subject's a black woman?

Puzzledandpissedoff · 25/08/2022 11:21

If only it did ...

StartupRepair · 25/08/2022 11:22

Thing is Serena, Mariah and all the other interviewees are different from Meghan because they have huge global accomplishments and she really doesn't. There is a kind of narrative that Meghan is a global talent but her main achievement is actually marrying someone globally famous.

Why would they be at the Oscars or Met Gala?
To be honest I really do not care how much cache they have or do not have. But I find my American friends and family care more about the Royal Family, including Harry and Meghan than my British family and friends do.
Outside of MN I speak to nobody British who cares about this kind of thing. If it is in the headlines they will know, so they saw Catherine's birthday photos, and they knew about the Oprah interview, but 99% of what we talk about on here passes them by.
Although the few family members who are a bit obsessive about twitter do know about some of the rumours as they trended.

Just googled and there are loads of news items that Harry and Meghan were invited to present an award at the Oscars but this was axed at the last minute. I do not know the truth and do not really care.
