Meghan's long-awaited podcast has launched. Sorry if there's a thread about this already. Has anyone listened to it yet? Thoughts?

Thing is Serena, Mariah and all the other interviewees are different from Meghan because they have huge global accomplishments and she really doesn't. There is a kind of narrative that Meghan is a global talent but her main achievement is actually marrying someone globally famous.

That is so bitchy. She was a fairly successful actress. Not A-list, but not someone who had done nothing with her life either.

And if you think that is a fair criticism why do you not say that about other women who have married into the Royal Family?

Ohnonevermind · 25/08/2022 11:31

i would love if Meghan interviewed Ivanka Trump as they’re both so similar. It soils be off the scale self importance

those met gala and Oscar rumours are the usual sunshine Sachs nonsense. Just like they were going to the Obama’s party. Keep their clients in the headlines.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 25/08/2022 11:36

Speaking of the Obamas, I did wonder if Michelle would be an interviewee given that they're supposed to be friends

Now that really would have been worth a listen, since among black women to admire she's up there with the best

zigzagzigzagz · 25/08/2022 11:40

Puzzledandpissedoff · 25/08/2022 11:19

With all this racism stuff surrounding her surely it was probably not a good idea to make fun of English accents?

Save your breath, ittakes2, unless you want a lecture about colonialism, privilege and all the rest

Personally I think it's a bit rude to mock anyone's accent, no matter where it's from, but then I also wondered about Harry choosing Serena's hair for comment.
Isn't that supposed to be risky territory when the subject's a black woman?

I have to say I thought this too. I’m sure if it had been anyone else MM would have called them out. Tbh I did think Serena sounded a bit unimpressed by it.

pieami · 25/08/2022 11:46

are Spotify really going to be able to recover the £15m they've spent on the deal with MM?

Ohnonevermind · 25/08/2022 11:57

It will be interesting to see how the podcast fares in the charts, how many additional people will listen over the next few weeks.

The rumours will then start about who is ‘desperate’ to appear on it to keep the podcasts in the news courtesy of the sunshine Sachs playbook

The podcast is not aimed at British people. It is aimed at Americans. From what I have seen in the press the Americans love this podcast.
Every product has a target market it is made for.
And cultural differences are very real.

I don’t know what press you are reading but everything I have read ( here and US) is scathing .

Agree - I would definitely listen to that . Or Hillary Clinton .

Ohnonevermind · 25/08/2022 12:26

@Readinginthesun

i just don’t know if Meghan would let Michelle speak though. Or keep turning the conversation back to her favourite subject ‘Meghan’ rather than exploring Michelle’s experiences in detail

garlicandsapphires · 25/08/2022 12:34

You seem quite invested @Ohnonevermind? Personally I find them a bit irritating but never understand the hatred shown towards them. It really brings out so much vitriol

MangshorJhol · 25/08/2022 12:40

@antelopevalley Maybe they talk about the royal family with you because you are British? Having lived here since the early 2000s the Royals are not that big a deal. Diana was. But neither William/Kate or Harry and Meghan are that big in celebrity terms.

As for their cache, it is important to them. Other than being a royal Harry hasn’t done much. He served one tour (this is a country whose soldiers have served multiple tours and where because of the screwed up health system many veterans are homeless- the guy who did one tour of Afghanistan and now lives in a mansion because his granny is Queen won’t get much sympathy). I know Harry has done stuff like the Invictus Games but that is all a product of his birth rather than any actual achievement. Meghan Markle was a B list star in one hit show. They do not individually have star power. What they have as a couple is this story of breaking free from the Royal family.
But at some point in order to be financially independent their narrative has to move beyond that. Being a philanthropist is not a job unless you have earned so much money and wealth that you can spend your time in philanthropy. You don’t finish college wanting to be a philanthropist. So they have an identity issue in a country where hard work and perseverance is highly highly prized.

(I am not suggesting any of the Royals work that hard btw- but none of the others are trying to make it big in the US).

The other women in the Royal family like Kate are perfectly happy to be the wife of the heir. I don’t think they are claiming to be global philanthropists or anything. I am not a fan of Kate per se (she seems like a devoted mother but that’s about it- she’s a very wealthy privileged woman). But she has never projected herself to be something she is not.

For those questioning the podcast and rubbishing it, or wondering how well it's doing. It's No. 1 in the US Top Podcasts.

Well done Meghan.

These podcasts need staying power to be successful wonder if this one has it. Or a one week wonder like the bench

I think I read that M had a bit of a girl crush on Invanka - posted about her on The Tig and praised her up. Also you can find photos of her wearing replica outfits which Ivanka had also worn previously. I should imagine she'd prefer not to dwell too much on that these days so I think it would be unlikely to happen.

I'd like to hear Meghan interview Princess Anne. She was an Olympian - plus a successful Eventer - lots of ambition, drive and determination there. She really broke the mold of expectations for Royal ladies. Plus the kidnapping story is extraordinary - I heard her account of it many years ago.

That would be good. I'd tune in for that one.

Michelle is also extremely fond of HM and the Royal Family, so I suspect would avoid!

I don’t think that’s a huge surprise . But will she be able to sustain that ? Time will tell . I do think she has a lovely speaking voice but the content was poor . I gave up after 10 minutes .

SueSaid · 25/08/2022 13:24

'will be interesting to see how the podcast fares in the charts, how many additional people will listen over the next few weeks.'

No 1 in the charts due to widespread derision. 'Housing units' and 'fires breaking out'. What planet do they actually live on.

I'm surprised Serena Williams took part surely the ambition of a world class athlete does not compare to someone who married a Prince.

I also think Kate was lazy and unaccomplished she's never had a real job just married well and produced children. Kate doesn't make podcasts comparing herself to independently successful people. Meghan was a c list actress with a supporting role on a cable TV show before she married Harry the fame is because of her marriage she needs to accept that.

ArcaneLana · 25/08/2022 13:42

Nobody knows how Michelle feels about Meghan or what she would do. Funnily Enough it’s only on mumsnet where she is constantly brought up and Megan compared unfavorably to her. There are other successful inspiring black women out there rumored to be featured in this podcast and many black women I’ve seen on Twitter are excited to hear from them. Issa Rae being one. Serena is Meghan’s friend it seemed from listening and instagram post that she is more than happy to support her friend.

Yes, time will tell. I think it caters more for the American market than us, but to topple Joe Rogan is quite something!

They're friends and speak warmly about each other, that's what friends do, no surprise she took part at all

❤️ Issa Rae. Insecure is the best so funny and clever. Kelli is my favourite. I'd get over myself and watch the podcast if IR was on it.

queenofarles · 25/08/2022 14:06

We have some truly global celebrities in the US. The new Netflix thing with Chelsea and Hillary- that’s big news, even among people who hate them. Do you mean Gutsy on Apple? I’ve seen some previews and it does look interesting , I confess I don’t know most of the people featured but I guess they are big in the US. i don’t listen to any podcasts , neither DH or anyone I know really , so docseries like this is something we might have a look at,

It’s quite interesting what you’ve said MangshorJhol i remember someone else on here , saying exactly the same thing , they are not that known in the US too, but we all forget just how big the US is, what’s big in California doesn’t equal the whole of the US,

Can't see Princess Anne signing up for that, but if she did I suspect it would be very interesting, but perhaps not for in the reasons some think....

Might be a popcorn required job...........

'They're friends and speak warmly about each other, that's what friends do, no surprise she took part at all'

Yes sorry, you're right. No surprise she took part they are friends true. What is surprising is she allowed MM to suggest ambition regarding marrying a Prince is anywhere close to ambition in elite athletics. Someone needs to challenge their guff occasionally, well obviously they did in the UK hence the flounce.
