Meghan's long-awaited podcast has launched. Sorry if there's a thread about this already. Has anyone listened to it yet? Thoughts?

The comment Meghan made was in no way a comparison to what Serena went through, it was to get a dig in about the royal family.

Gilmorehill · 27/08/2022 22:57

Exactly. She is very bitter.

themessygarden · 27/08/2022 22:57

MarshaMelrose · 27/08/2022 19:23

Do you mean this...

Serena: “How did you not bring him?”

Meghan: “I was like, Can you just tell people what happened? And so much, I think, optically. The focus ends up being on how it looks instead of how it feels. And part of the humanizing and the breaking through of these labels and these archetypes and these boxes that we’re put into is having some understanding on the human moments behind the scenes that people might not have any awareness of and to give each other a break.

Bizarre response that makes no sense what so ever.

CauliflowerCheese30 · 27/08/2022 22:58

Bitter, yet the platform she now has is because she married into them.

Precisely

SilverLiningPlaybook · 27/08/2022 23:06

It’s the combination of the ‘housing unit’ with ‘they made me’ or words to that effect. Bitter, vengeful and entitled.
I do think she suffers from delusions of grandeur.

What does she want

I agree and it will be interesting to see if this was a one off or a theme that is going to run through the entire series. If it does continue then she is going to blow herself wide open. Not great for her or Sunshine Sachs but probably will work out ok $$ for Spotify.

Ohnonevermind · 27/08/2022 23:34

Meghan’s response was complete world salad. Do people really speak to each other like that in California 🤣

I think she wanted to be treated like the Queen!

I read that all episodes have already been recorded. I predict emergency production/editing meetings.

But this is not really scrutiny...and any way, who scrutinises podcasts anyway?

MNers do. 🙂

There is footage going around of a time Charles was in Australia and someone fired a gun at him at close range. It was blanks but no-one knew that. It must have been terrifying. Yet he continued with the engagement and the visit. This is the unwritten contract that Meghan doesn't understand. In return for the jewels, money, global fame etc the royals are meant to project calm, interest and trust in their hosts. Meghan has annoyed so many people in South Africa because she has shown a lack of trust in them as her hosts.

“New money accommodations are much more comfortable than old ones and “housing unit” in American parlance means substandard”

No, “housing unit” really doesn’t mean substandard. I use that term n relation to condominiums, where a old house is subdivided into units. And these are often very nice, old houses on the East Coast.

The substandard bit is a heater that was unsafe and I think we would all agree with that.

Someone in real estate agent dealing with condos and apartments may call them “units” but I’ve never heard anyone say “housing unit” in this way.

I listened to it. Would have preferred to hear more from serena Williams. It was like a lot of podcasts - too much personal stuff from the host. Annoying when the guest is so amazing and would have had so much to say in your the hands of a skilled interviewer.

I was a bit surprised by her comments about the accommodation in South Africa, she did come across as a bit rude.

I might listen again depending on the guest. Not interested in Mariah Carey but Margaret Cho would be interesting.

This post gets to the heart of why we are all here. M's behaviour is unusual in that it deviates from shared scripts, usual conventions and collective expectations, and we all want to know why!

There have been several examples of that now - and she goes against the norm every time. When the expectation is to be grateful, she isn't. When the expectation is to praise your hosts, she doesn't. When the expectation is to keep quiet, she cant. She is out of step with cultural norms and societal mores, many of them universal (not insulting your hosts is one of the first rules that children learn everywhere). This is the reason why people want to discuss M. Whether M's particular brand of bucking convention will be rewarding for her remains to be seen.

That’s an insightful and thought provoking post.
I find the way that they both operate fascinating on a psychological level. Their shared dynamic and the way that they apparently see the world
is so strange it generates discussion and scrutiny. I am actually beginning to wonder if M is doing it all deliberately to focus attention on herself. Whether that is positive or negative attention doesn’t seem to matter to her.

I think this is absolutely on the nail.

MissMarpleRocks · 28/08/2022 07:33

I agree with pp - a thought provoking post MaulPerton. It’s expected of everyone isn’t it? I’d never thought of that before.

Societal norms.

You go to someone’s for party/dinner. You say thank you for a lovely evening even if it was boring. Well at least I do.

I’ve not had a chance to listen to the podcast & probably won’t for a while, but when I’ve heard Meghan speak before I've found her soothing. Her voice is lovely. I should imagine that she will improve as an interviewer over time as she gains more experience.

SmileyFaces12 · 28/08/2022 08:42

Spot on @MaulPerton . We’re probably hardwired to suss out those in society not playing by the rules .
What I don’t understand is that she made it to the very top echelon of society. You would think any fool would be clever enough to recognise that and protect their position .

I completely agree however I am sure someone will come along praising MM for “ being authentic”
