Meghan's long-awaited podcast has launched. Sorry if there's a thread about this already. Has anyone listened to it yet? Thoughts?

People get offended by all sorts of things, innocuous and not.

@NanaNelly In the US as housing unit refers to government subsidized housing. I asked my husband (who say who? If I say Meghan) to define housing unit and he said the same.

if I google “housing unit” here’s the first news article that comes up. I’m nowhere near California.

www.gov.ca.gov/2022/08/24/in-los-angeles-governor-newsom-announces-694-million-in-homekey-awards-to-create-more-than-2500-new-homeless-housing-units-statewide/

It not a term I’ve heard anyone from the US would use to mean anything else.

Thank you. It’s exactly what I thought.

Cococushion · 27/08/2022 20:49

really do you think Mm was saying

“Archie was not safe because they put us in subsidised govt housing aka a slum”

or

“Archie was not safe because we were in a separate accommodation and no one living in the main building would notice if there was smoke/fire in his room”

.

There are a few posters who come across as histrionic and unhinged and have done a great job of silencing over the years - you can see them escalate into even more high pitched histrionics as these threads go on
My suggestion is not to reward bad behaviour - just don’t engage with them and fail on down their rabbit hole derailing trap
Just continue rational debate and discussion above their heads ignoring their posts - much like you would if you were out for coffee with a friend and a tedious toddler was screaming and shouting for attention from another table

Superb advice, DFOD ...

"Never play chess with a pigeon
The pigeon just knocks all the pieces over
Then shits all over the board
Then struts around like it won"

This is exactly the tactic here.

@DFOD

It seems that some posters want to censor and silence any rational discussion on H&M and they do this by deliberately agitating and disproportionately amplifying with polarising, histrionics and inflammatory accusations of bullying and racism by other posters…..which derails the original easy going discussion

Except no-one is trying to silence the discussion - simply giving their perspective - it’s an open forum.

I’m not sure that many people would disagree that MM was bullied by the tabloids and on social media and that racism played its part. You only had to read the comments online about her race and colour to see that. That’s not personal to posters on this thread who may or may not have been part of it.

I remain unconvinced that obsessive analysis of her every word on this forum comes across as rational. In fact, disproportionate amplification and inflammatory accusations are apt characterisations of the criticism.

I agree that she has been and is the victim of horrendous racism and misogyny in the press and social media.

And of course that is vile and reprehensible.

However her gender and ethnicity doesn’t preclude her from debate, discussion or scrutiny and nor should they.

Someone can be a woman of colour and a PITA.

Cococushion · 27/08/2022 21:02

But this is not really scrutiny...and any way, who scrutinises podcasts anyway?

you either enjoy them or you don’t. You agree with some of the stuff said and disagree with other stuff and let it go. You certainly don’t pick over each word. And assign a negative meaning. ..that’s just weird.

unname · 27/08/2022 21:12

If a friend of mine said this, I would think they found the accommodations substandard. I would say “Oh was it that bad?”

I just think she expected everything to be nicer and more glamorous and comfortable than what she encountered. Old money vs new money. She’s used to LA, not dust old piles.

It’s not a crime, but you can’t be shocked that her saying this to a global audience, in any context, would offend her hosts.

I do disagree with that. Scrutiny is simply to look at something carefully or intently, to analyse and dissect.

I watch a lot of history, science and politics podcasts and they are discussed online and sometimes I join in, if it's about a subject I'm particularly interested in and feel that I know something about.

I also occasionally enjoy watching the 'Behavior Panel' on You Tube (former FBI and military behavioural experts) who will pick apart anyone saying anything in the public eye. Fascinating.

Everything in the public domain is open to scrutiny.

I think this whole podcast / Netflix deal has been a mis-step, to be honest.

unname · 27/08/2022 21:30

It’s a thread about a podcast. People are going to talk about it.

and words mean things. This is an American podcast and they are using American terms. They have a shared understanding of these terms already, no one needs to assign meaning to them. If Serena didn’t know what she meant, she would have asked.

Cococushion · 27/08/2022 21:32

I also don’t get that old money is somehow superior to new money.

new money is recently earned and hopefully by the ding of one’s own hard work. Old money is inherited, and not a reflection of your own efforts.

And in terms of housing, nothing wrong with new over old. I would prefer a modern well insulated, energy efficient house (and it would align with my eco values) to an old pile with dodgy electrics and single glaze windows that is entirely energy inefficient.

I prefer simplicity and frugality to avarice and hoarding... but that’s not anything to do with old money or new money.

in fact many of the simple eco friendly people have no money at all.

a long winded way of saying that American new money is just as good (or bad ) as UK old money. Preferring ‘old money’ and somehow assigning it to any virtues is just a hang up and justification of a feudal and class system.

Cococushion · 27/08/2022 21:34

“and words mean things. This is an American podcast and they are using American terms. They have a shared understanding of these terms already, no one needs to assign meaning to them. If Serena didn’t know what she meant, she would have asked”

of course, but why do you think MM and Serena think that staying in a separate housing unit within a larger residence means a shit-hole?

unname · 27/08/2022 21:43

New money accommodations are much more comfortable than old ones and “housing unit” in American parlance means substandard.

IrisVersicolor · 27/08/2022 21:44

I’m not buying listening to stuff on history/politics/science etc as justification of poring over minor podcast. It seems a complete non sequitur.

Luckily for you (and Meghan, of she shared your tastes) the High Commissioner’s Cape Town Residence was gutted by a fire in 1999. It was rebuilt, so the interior was indeed modern and up to date

Serenster · 27/08/2022 21:49

And as people keep telling us, this isn’t a “minor podcast”. Numerous screenshots have been posted pointing out how it’s top of the charts world wide. You can’t have it both ways.

Cococushion · 27/08/2022 21:50

“New money accommodations are much more comfortable than old ones and “housing unit” in American parlance means substandard”

No, “housing unit” really doesn’t mean substandard. I use that term n relation to condominiums, where a old house is subdivided into units. And these are often very nice, old houses on the East Coast.

The substandard bit is a heater that was unsafe and I think we would all agree with that.

Isn’t she referring to podcasts of this ilk? Ie inconsequential chat.

SpinCityBlues · 27/08/2022 21:54

I don't know. It appears to have to have become Schrödinger's Podcast.

derxa · 27/08/2022 21:56

of course, but why do you think MM and Serena think that staying in a separate housing unit within a larger residence means a shit-hole? Irritating word twisting There were no 'housing units'

Cococushion · 27/08/2022 22:04

Yes, I meant chatty podcasts. these are hardly meant to be scientific, academic discussions! She is talking with SW and Mariah Carey. Not Mary Beard or Brian Cox.

it is fine to say the host talked too much or had an irritating voice or whatever.

but nitpicking over words and then calling someone a liar or repeatedly berating them because they use phrases that you are not familiar with...is just odd!

I studied linguistics and phonetics for 5 years. Analysis of language use was my bread and butter for years.

Meghan has made it very clear that she takes her own interpretations of words very seriously and if she finds something offensive she will call it out. Sometimes to the whole world, and with no right of reply. She’s been praised for this by posters here. Surely she (and her fans) must expect that other people are entitled to take the same approach to her?

Puzzledandpissedoff · 27/08/2022 22:47

I give you the following, IrisVedrsicolor:

"Several of them have been identified and hopefully will be taken down. A prolific one from you tube as well hopefully MN comes next"
