The royal family

Why did Harry and Meghan walk in alone?

I have had a very busy weekend so have only been able to catch snippets of the jubilee weekend events but noticed how Harry and Meghan walked into the service together, seemingly after everybody else, including those sitting in front and behind them?
Why was this? I understand why they didn't walk in with the serving royals but it seemed strange that their entrance stood out so much.

I think the other royals arrived in a coach but they were driven in a car. Not sure if this was the reason though.

QuebecBagnet · 05/06/2022 07:15

Dunno. Apparently they went back to frogmore cottage by themselves after and everyone else went to a reception. So maybe from a logistics pov the coach was going to one place afterwards and they were going somewhere else. But why they weren’t going to the reception I don’t know. I assume their choice ?

Snog · 05/06/2022 08:15

Maybe to avoid uncomfortable public interactions with other royals as this would be heavily reported on by the media and detract from the Queen's Jubilee?

mdh2020 · 05/06/2022 09:17

The Times says they were given their ‘moment’. The whole weekend has been geared to putting Charles and William, as future kings, front and centre. Megan and Harry are a sideshow and a distraction. No one wants them anyway

francesfrankenfurter · 05/06/2022 09:18

The queen apparently wanted them to have their own entrance.

Circumferences · 05/06/2022 09:19

They aren't working royals anymore so they rightly shouldn't have been going along with the royals who are legitimate.

Wrong. Do not speak for anyone but yourself, I was happy to see them there.

sashagabadon · 05/06/2022 09:23

I think they came in a car and the others Zara etc Eugenie came in a minibus together. I imagine they would not have wanted to be in the minibus?

Westfacing · 05/06/2022 09:24

Maybe because despite not being 'front line' royals Harry is still Charles' son, so is still senior to those who were seated in that section and it would be right that he arrives last?

It's the way the RF do things!

Classicblunder · 05/06/2022 09:25

I think to avoid photos of other royals glaring at them like the ones from just before they left with Kate and William looking daggers

Parkperson00 · 05/06/2022 09:29

I know it was their daughter's birthday yesterday but I was surprised not to see them at the concert. Are they going's to any other jubilee events or are they going back to the States straight away?

GoingOnce · 05/06/2022 09:35

Something must have veered from plan though because M&H had to climb over people to get to their seats. These things are very carefully orchestrated and there is no way that was meant to happen. I think they were supposed to get to their seats before the York girls but delayed at the back of the church and subsequently caused confusion in the pews.

francesfrankenfurter · 05/06/2022 09:39

But there is no way they would have got to their seats before Eugenia and Beatrice based on when people arrived.
You are right that these things are coordinated.

cottagegardenflower · 05/06/2022 10:07

They are not working royals any longer and not resident here so could not be part of the royal party. However they were too important to lump in with the crowd of visitors, hence in their own.

@emuloc I agree with you. Thank you. 💐

It's very sweet to see how much the Queen loves and supports Harry and Meghan, that it was arranged for them to have their own "moment in the spotlight."

Clearly that would not have happened if the Queen did not want it to happen.

Considering the loud cheering the royalist crowd gave Harry and Meghan when they arrived (so different from the boos for Boris Johnson) it was clearly the right choice.

So nice to see confirmation that the hatred online is just a handful of bitter obsessives.

SenecaFallsRedux · 05/06/2022 15:17

They arrived according to royal protocol; people arrive in reverse order of precedence. The York princesses and husbands arrived by car before Harry and Meghan. They were not on the bus.

Princess Anne also did not attend the event at the Guildhall after the service; she headed off to Edinburgh for an engagement.

Parkperson00 · 05/06/2022 15:17

@JemimaPuddlegoose I think 'Hate' for them is far too strong a word but all the YouGov surveys show that support for the Sussexs has massively declined. At one time, straight after their wedding they were at the top of the chart of most popular royals but since the decision to no longer be working royals, since the 'interview', since Harry's misjudged remarks about him checking in on the Queen to make sure she is surrounded by the right type of people, their popularity has disappeared.
There are so many comments about the Queen having been here for the country over the past seventy years. The Sussexs make no secret of their preference for a life in sunny California. A lot of people in the UK felt abandoned by them and very, very hurt by their actions since then.
Meghan would have been a brilliant addition to the Royal Family. She had so much to offer but she chose to reject the RF and the UK. Her choice but she cannot expect people to love her for those choices.

Parkperson00 · 05/06/2022 15:30

In my opinion she will regret the 'interview'. It was poorly advised. Lots of influential people have avoided them since then. I thought it was wonderful that Michelle Obama appeared in the interview praising the Queen and the warm welcome they received at the Palace. Notably, Michelle and Barack did not invite the Sussexs to Barack's significant Birthday party. I suspect she is now seen as a loose cannon. Fall out with with Meghan and there is a fear that she will go public.
The Queen is above all a diplomat. As she said, 'Recollections may vary'. She will be pleased at the public reconciliation but her praise and 'Could not be more proud' remarks last night were reserved for Charles and William.
All the Queen can do is to accept the Sussexs departure from the Royal family with grace and civility. They have made their choice.

roarfeckingroarr · 05/06/2022 15:37

Because no one in the RF likes Meghan? I certainly wouldn't want to walk with someone who caused a shit storm then insulted and lied about my family to the world's media

ArcaneLana · 05/06/2022 15:45

Michelle and Meghan were never close , they were never friends. I doubt they even know each other well as not all high profile black / POC know each other. Meghan has never claimed her Michelle , and Barack were friends. So them not getting an invitation to the party was a UK tabloid thing. I think it’s sad when Michelle is used as a stick to beat Meghan up with. I suspect Michelle would recognize all the racist tabloid commentary Meghan faced and I don’t think she would appreciate being used as a ‘good black’ because she faced the same onslaught of racist abuse if not more. Michelle and Barack are totally different black people from Meghan, they have never been on the same level as her, they were president and First Lady. I thought their message appreciating the Queen as a head of State who gave them a warm welcome was nice. It had nothing to do with Meghan just as Daniel Craig etc etc messages had nothing to do with anyone except the queen.

Swayingpalmtrees · 05/06/2022 15:48

I assume it was to ensure there was no way they could end up walking at the same time as William, given the two are still not talking.

I would imagine the rest of the royal family, aides and friends etc are feeling cautious too, with the book looming and goodness knows what Harry is prepared to 'sell' for another few million. Yes, quite rightly this has all been managed very carefully.

Comments like this always amaze me. The level of assumptions, and stating as fact, in regards to what members of the royal family do/think has reached ridiculous levels in recent years. People just make up their own little storylines, usually as dramatic as possible, and go with it. It's fascinating to see!

Swayingpalmtrees · 05/06/2022 15:56

I expect everyone will be breathing a very big sigh of relief as they leave.

Parkperson00 · 05/06/2022 16:16

@ArcaneLana and @JudyRudy . Michelle and the Obamas do have a relationship or did. She attended Northwestern University in Chicago and volunteered in the Democrat Headquarters as part of the campaign nearly twenty years ago to elect Barack Obama as a Senator. Barack and Michelle have been loyal to their supporters from that time and a friend of ours who worked alongside Meghan on the campaign was sent a handwritten congratulatory note when she married. Meghan was very involved in that campaign.
