and thinks Camilla is a great choice for him?

I think he's okay. He seems kind and friendly and tolerant and I like that he'd very much in touch with nature a d the environment. I think him and Camilla make a perfect couple.
I can't believe people here are still going on about his split with Diana and holding that against him. That was a quarter of a century ago and Diana was no angel herself. In any case, couple make mistakes, they split and they move on with life. How many people here have had failed marriages and moved on. We don't define everyone by their first failed marriage so why is Charles still held to it. Sure he has his own regrets.

Topseyt123 · 12/05/2022 09:58

I do like him, and thankfully we will have him as our next monarch rather than his horrendous younger brother Andrew!

Camilla has been very good for him and I think is the person he should have been allowed to marry when still a young man. Instead, his tone deaf parents and grandmother steered him into an ultimately disastrous marriage to Diana.

Of course, the good to come out of the marriage to Diana was William and Harry (yes, I do like Harry too). The rest is now history.

I am more than happy that Camilla will be Queen (Consort) and that we will have a king who might try to hold governments to account on stuff like climate change.

I know that it is an overdone discussion which has never produced a consensus.

Of course she would have been completely out of her depth in the beginning - she was a teenager FFS. Even her own perception of being control of any aspect of the situation would have been flawed at that age. The passage of time does not change poor character in the sense of letting bygones be bygones (unless C & C have had extensive therapy since they behaved in that way over an extended period of time - I cannot quite see it).

Really cannot get past that he wants to be a tampon, treated Diana like dirt.

Oh, but it was the first eco-friendly tampon!

diamondpony80 · 12/05/2022 10:51

I like him. And Camilla too.

IcedPurple · 12/05/2022 10:53

I'm not too sure if I would go as far as to say I like Charles, but I don't mind him. I think he will make a decent king. Whether the monarchy itself is a worthy institution is another question.

Camilla, however, seems like a blast. I would love to spend an evening with her and a few bottles of vino.

waltzingparrot · 12/05/2022 11:08

I have a new found respect for him. I used to think he was a big wet lettuce but his Prince's Trust work is inspirational and to be commended - his PR should promote it more.

Legoninjago1 · 12/05/2022 11:11

I like both of them Smile

I do find it interesting that people think it is acceptable to continue to humiliate a victim of hacking because of the content of their lawful private conversations.

sashagabadon · 12/05/2022 12:39

I like him!

IncompleteSenten · 12/05/2022 12:44

I don't know him. I have no idea what he is actually like, I only know his public persona.

I am fundamentally opposed to the monarchy and I think he and the rest of them lead such privileged lives they genuinely have no idea what life is like for ordinary people.

I also think they could put their huge personal wealths to good use. Since they think we are their 'subjects' they could at least feed the hungry and house the homeless.

But yeah, wanging on about the climate and shit while they jet round the world is fine.

people are now seriously questioning the value of the Royal Family.

Only on MN threads. I have literally heard nothing anti-monarchy of note outside of this forum.

Really?!

It is literally everywhere I look. But then... I am on Twitter and Reddit so maybe that's why.
But whatever.... it certainly is not confined to MN! Far louder voices outside of MN.

cabansunset · 12/05/2022 13:35

I like them both, they seem very happy and devoted to each other.

Doesn’t that depend on who you follow on Twitter? So you will see views that correspond with your own?

I am on Twitter and have not had that experience

Really? I'm not sure I know anyone in real life under the age of 75 who likes the monarchy! It's hardly a new sentiment.

Yes of course. The poster does not see anything anti-monarchy. It doesn't mean to say it's not out there though.

I don't follow any particular anti monarchy accounts at all. It still pops up in response to news articles.
For instance, the many articles on the Queen's Speech. If you read the comments, it is much so.

So I don't think you have to follow accounts to see it.

And yes, I agree with @PailOfOdo especially among younger people, there is no pro RF that I know of.

I am very happy that the prime minister will have a mandatory weekly meeting with a king who is just going to pester him about the environment and climate change

How will that work when he himself is a huge contributor to these? Will he swap his unecessary gas-guzzling helicopter, Bentley (9 miles to the gallon, I think?) and private jet journeys for a Boris Bike?

Because if you insist on waiting for a person of utmost purity before you allow any advocacy for the environment then this planet is fucked. An imperfect advocate is better than no advocate at all.

sashagabadon · 12/05/2022 16:57

I think people can become more pro monarchy as they age ( not everyone of course). I was a pro republican until I hit about 30 , then I didn’t care either way for about a decade and now I am swayed by pro monarchy arguments. My dh too. He prides himself on not giving a shit when Diana died whereas I went up to Kensington palace to pay my respects ( as my sister was going) . My (former) republican dh suggested the other day going up to the mall jubilee weekend to see what’s happening and wave a flag about for a bit and then declared Camilla would be an ok Queen which I would never have predicted and I was 🤔

Badger1970 · 11/05/2022 20:17

I have a lot of respect for him - he's very passionate about sustainable farming, planning and architecture. And his work with the Princes Trust has made a huge difference to many young people starting out.

I just feel a bit sorry for him that he's getting a tainted legacy - I sadly think HM has made some very poor decisions of late and people are now seriously questioning the value of the Royal Family.

Tbh his "passionate" approach to architecture is precisely what makes it very hard to muster anything approaching respect for him - pig-ignorant yet so full of his own importance he expects to bully public decision-making in a subject he has zero expertise in. If he were just your average Joe Bloggs voicing his philistine views at the pub, more power to him, but his very real abuse of his public position is outrageous.

Isn't he pushing sugar pills as well? Same same.

Joystir59 · 12/05/2022 17:07

Yep. You're the only one. Don't like the royal family. Want them all to fade out when the Queen dies.

ImJustMadAboutSaffron · 12/05/2022 17:08

I like Camilla, and Charlie is OK. The only royals I can't stand are Princess Michaela and Air Miles Andy. Meghan Markle I don't count as royal tbh.

Cliftontherocks · 12/05/2022 17:10

LeftFootForward · 11/05/2022 22:13

I don't have problem with him at all. He was decades ahead of many in his support for the the natural environment and really mocked for it which was a disgrace.

I don't have an issue with Camilla either. In fact I think she appears to be one of the more normal, if that's the right word, members of the royal family. I suspect she's a woman with balls of steel too which I always admire.

Imo, being a member of the Royal family is a pretty rubbish role in life. I certainly wouldn't want to be on show everytime I stepped outside. I have alot of sympathy for them as a family.

Ha ha he converted his car to run on the rubbish bits of cheese and things we should all do the same - he is beyond clueless as to most people and what they live like

He does sod all. No money no donation and very very little time to give unless it is a project he is interested in. It’s the ground volunteers and paid staff that do the hard work he does pretty much fuck all

ChildDLA · 12/05/2022 17:31

I remember the Grauniad’s campaign to have the ‘black spider’ letters published. The only thing that stuck out were the replies from various ministers, which ended ‘your most humble and obedient servant…’ I remember being disgusted at the sycophancy shown towards Charles.

I’m completely pro republican so my feelings towards Charles have nothing to do with Diana, Camilla, etc .

As for his plans to streamline the monarchy, does that mean that the Sovereign Grant will be reduced, or will it stay the same percentage as now so fewer Royals get more?

Also Charles has had several undesirable friendships - most notably JS and PB. I do wonder if there’s more to come out regarding this, and the investigation into the cash for honours scandal. He’s not a particularly intelligent man yet surrounded by people who hang on his every word.
