The royal family

If you were as fearful for your family's safety as Harry is....

...why would you want to have them participate in a really high-profile public bash?

Particularly one to celebrate an institution you have walked away from.

Genuinely puzzled.

I knew it was a mis-type... lordy me, we all do them sometimes!

LittleBearPad · 17/01/2022 20:44

@Roussette

I never look at the DFail LittleBear

I see different. A lot of support for Harry wanting to pay to protect his family.

I specifically said not only in the Mail. That’s what’s always thrown back in terms of BTL comments. It’s true of other newspapers too.
ancientgran · 17/01/2022 20:44

But saying someone is the son of the future monarch would surely mean you think one of their parents is the future monarch. I'm not sure what else it could mean. I mean it's not like a spelling mistake which yes everyone does.

An obvious statement to someone who does not know who Harry and Archie are. Which most posters on here know, surely Well I know Archie is Harry's son and I know it is highly unlikely that Harry is the future monarch so to me it was obvious that it was wrong.

ancientgran · 17/01/2022 20:48

One job my husband had involved us living in a police property nextdoor to a cabinet minister. We had police protection officers in what should have been our garden. I don't remember any of them being particularly dishy, maybe they save the lookers for royalty. I parked my car next to their little booth where they were stationed. I've never thought my car was safer.

The sussexes do not need popularity and certainly not in the UK

The RF need popularity, loud and enthusiastic. And they need it in the UK and the commonwealth. The approach to the sussexes is not received the same way in the commonwealth.

Maybe the RF no longer care about the commonwealth. I noticed it was Harry who was always sent to see the black majority countries of the commonwealth. I wonder who they will send in future

PenelopePitstop79 · 17/01/2022 21:01

@MaryAndGerryLivingInDerry

I don’t understand the need some have to constantly stick the boot into this man.
Yep. Absolutely. The man needs protection because there has been a public hate campaign whipped up against him & his family. Piers Morgan is the guiltiest. Can we not send Piers Morgan off to some other continent far away? Fed up with this mouthpiece whipping up hatred.

Support for becoming a republic is steady at around only one fifth of the population and has been so for decades. There's no mainstream political party talking about replacing the UK's system of constitutional monarchy. This is at the most ignominious time of the Queen's long reign, with one of her sons very likely to be on trial in the US, and there's still no significant movement for the monarchy to be replaced. I think they're fairly safely ensconced. Anything else is wishful thinking.

The move towards a more streamlined and scaled-back monarchy is exactly what's needed.

nottodaybatman · 17/01/2022 21:09

@dontsaythj

I think you are referencing the UK

The RF heads up a commonwealth that is 75% non white. The current PR is awful. While kicking the boot into the sussexes is fun and games, and covering up for Andrew because he is mummy's special soldier might be fine for the UK, its doesn't work well else where.

For true believers in the RF, surely they should want to preserve the RF everywhere and would he concerned at the non UK optics. Just a musing....

Oh Dan Wootton makes me laugh. I was listening to a current affairs podcast today where he unexpectedly turned up as one of the guests to breathlessly claim that MM was supposedly messaging Max George from The wanted and some bloke who was on X Factor around the same time she met Harry. Not to mention being best buddies with Lizzie Cundy and Millie McKintosh Grin. Everyone was dropped and ghosted immediately allegedly.

Roussette · 17/01/2022 21:17

Totally agree @nottodaybatman

It doesn't look good if you read foreign press.

RoseAndRose · 17/01/2022 21:20

I noticed it was Harry who was always sent to see the black majority countries of the commonwealth. I wonder who they will send in future

That's not terribly accurate - Harry (before and since marriage) has done about 14 such tours, William has done same (I say 'about' because I'm not terribly sure which countries are in the Commonwealth) - but it's pretty much the same.

The large numbers of visits by the Countess of Wessex and Princess Anne (especially with Save the Children) dwarf the younger generation, even if youbare only looking at the last decade

nottodaybatman · 17/01/2022 21:24

@Roussette

I find it fascinating. But I wonder what the end game is?...
The sussexs do not matter, they have gone.
Fast forward 5 to 10 years, Andrew is still lurking about, Charles and wife will not be doing long flights. The cambridges have let it be known repeatedly that family life precludes them from too heavy a schedule. Edward and Sophie will be have to pick up the slack... would not want to be them flying into the Caribbean.

Outside of the commonwealth we had articles for Kates big birthday mocking Queen letizia of Spain for her weight and Charlene of Monaco for her mental health issues. The US will not be kind after the Andrew debacle. The PR is so so so bad.

nottodaybatman · 17/01/2022 21:28

@RoseAndRose

They have all travelled overseas. But I always remember Harry in places like Jamaica etc engaging with the locals
I don't recall william being majority black countries... not sure how to check this though

Either way someone needs to go to these places and be engaging and charming... I am not sure who fits the bill.

dontsaythj · 17/01/2022 21:31

Certainly could be the case in the commonwealth. I know that support in Canada is falling. Obviously my interest is primarily the UK.

I'm not white myself and have criticised the Sussexes and their intention to sue for the right to buy police time. On a personal level, I find them insufferable. I don't see everything through the lens of race.

I'm not sure what arch-Monarchists believe. I certainly didn't detect desolation when Barbados became a republic; to the contrary I thought that there was almost uniformally an attitude of dispassionate respect of their right to self-determination, and a desire for their new arrangement to be a success.

I'm not a fan of the royal family in themselves, but I hope to see our system of constitutional monarchy continue long into the future. Firstly, because it has been proven to offer stability, and apart from that I simply can't think of any suitable British figure for decades who could have served as president of a republic, without the head of state becoming a partisan choice beholden to politics, transient fads and petty obsessions.

cleocleo81 · 17/01/2022 21:31

@LublinToDublin

Eh? He just wants to be able to return safely with his family to the country he was born in.

I have no understanding of the legal or security issues involved but his desire to protect his family in the uk is not unreasonable.

In that case come over whenever as a private citizen in a private capacity and stay at a private residence with no threats. Why does he need to come to the jubilee?
DeeCeeCherry · 17/01/2022 21:34

The questions are - WHY would you walk your family into a situation in which they are put at risk, when it is not necessary? And WHY would you draw press and pap attention to them, when you believe the press and paps are a credible threat to their safety?

& If they didnt attend you'd hasten onto MN to say they were snubbing event/royal family.

Amazing how many twists and turns haters of H&M will go through to find anything at all to moan and aim to whip up hate frenzy about, much of which is just so very silly.

nottodaybatman · 17/01/2022 21:37

I am Republican because I think RF are self interested and greedy. And I think the last 5 years have shown a general poisoning of social discourse on race, mental health and sexual abuse all to prop up the RF, aided and abetted by the ever chatty royal sources. I see and saw the racism. Just like Kpop, other people disagreeing is fine, that is my opinion and others are entitled to theirs.

I want a politician I can vote in and out.

I don't want to tell any child of mine that one family is inherently better that us irrespective of what they do.

Roussette · 17/01/2022 21:37

I think it'll be like a house people have half moved out. A shell of itself. I know it sounds depressing but we can't under estimate how the Queen has been the glue that holds the Monarchy together because of the longevity and lack of impropriety.

And that glue will be gone and we'll be left with Royals who have all been involved in murky stuff in some way or other, some more than most.

I just can't see Charles being the gorilla glue to stick it all back together when the Queen dies. He's talked of slimming down, well... I think it's going to need more than that.....

RoseAndRose · 17/01/2022 21:42

If you go beyond Europe and Aus/Can/US/NZ, William has visited officially: Bhutan, Botswana, China, India, Israel, Japan, Lesotho, Kenyax2, Kuwait, Malaysia, Namibia, Oman, Pakistan, Palestine, Singapore, Solomon Islands, South Africa, Tanzania, Tuvalu, Vietnam

Harry: Angola, Bahamas, Belize, Botswana, Brazil x2, Chile, a Carribean tour, Fiji, Jamaica, Japan, Lesotho x3, Malawi, Nepal, Oman, South Africa x2, UAEx2, Zambia, Tonga

Sorry, I added up wrong! Harry has done more (though a couple of the trips were for polo or rugby)

nottodaybatman · 17/01/2022 21:46

@Roussette

I think there are very few true believers left.
As you say, fans of the Queen will not automatically transfer that enthusiasm to Charles.

The reaction to the sussexes is public bear baiting. It isn't in defence of the RF. If it was the RF official events and articles would have the same if not more engagement. That is the true reason the tabloid write endlessly about the sussexes, no one cares as much about the rest as much. Not enough to watch or read their output - or generate those clicks. And thats the conundrum

StarbucksSmarterSister · 17/01/2022 21:47

Why does he need to come to the jubilee

Because it's considered a big deal, no monarch has reigned this long and if he doesn't, he'll be trashed and accused of dissing his granny.

nottodaybatman · 17/01/2022 21:49

@RoseAndRose

Well thank you for digging that out.
Either way william is a married man with young children. I think Richard Eden said recently that Kate would be doing less but higher quality events for the next 10 years or so while her children were young. I cannot imagine William being keen to leave his family for months on end.

So it begs the question who will go see those countries and lay on the charm

RoseAndRose · 17/01/2022 21:50

It's a great shame that the work done by the Countess of Wessex and Princess Anne gets so little coverage.

For example, the Countess was meeting displaced Afghani women in Qatar today, as a side event during a tour as a global ambassador for the prevention of blindness. Barely a word in the British press - other than the redtops talking about her clothes

nottodaybatman · 17/01/2022 21:54

Sophie has a young son, she cannot be set on the road while Kate and will get to stay home. And as you say, while she and Anne are diligent they are not interesting to the masses.

The RF needs stars to justify their cost, patronages and position. They are going to have issues
