The royal family

Why is Andrew allegedly the Queen's "favourite son"?

I have read this a few times over the years and yesterday mentioned in most media outlets.
The Queen seems like a sensible sort with good judgement, and he has this reputation as a sleazy lazy twonk.
Of course I know from mn about the golden child syndrome who is actually pretty useless, but surely the Queen is above such things?
If anyone has any ideas on this I'd love to know because I'm stumped! (I'm also procrastinating because I'm on a deadline)

God, I'm glad I'm not royal. Speculating wildly about the previous sexual morality of a 95 year old woman who none of us know, when there is zero, really zero, evidence she was ever interested in anyone other than her late husband (from her early teens) let alone having children by them.

I totally agree. There are some deeply unpleasant posters on MN. I doubt they would welcome this sort of speculation on their own lives, but when it comes to royals, celebrities, or the rich it's open slather.

Harry looks like a young Prince Philip.

There's a strong resemblance here.

Of course people speculate. The Royal Family presents itself as the perfect family to the public to get our money. They publicise weddings, births, christenings, weddings, clothes, etc etc. Are we all simply supposed to swallow all the RF stories and never question anything?

You put yourself out there for money and some people will judge or speculate.

SantaHat · 15/01/2022 00:15

The whole Harry/Hewitt thing is particularly ridiculous considering Diana didn't even meet Hewitt until 2 years after Harry was born.
Just shows what a shameless number the tabloids do on the general public.

YourVagesty · 15/01/2022 00:34

I'm not sold on Hewitt/Harry but I definitely think Andrew looks like Porchester.

I'd not heard that rumour until now. Fascinating!

SantaClausIsAtTheDoorMum · 15/01/2022 00:38

@sadpapercourtesan

Why the hell would the Queen be "above such things"? Confused
She’s only human!!!!
Babyroobs · 15/01/2022 00:46

@Sarahlou63

Hmmm. Looking at photos of Lord Porchester and Andrew there does seem to be a resemblance. There again, Harry is the spit of James Hewitt.
Gosh the Porchie link that was posted earlier - the black and white photo in that article, Porchie looks just like prince William ? Maybe Porchie is Charles's dad too?

@EmmaPaella

Edward was Phillip's favourite. Andrew the Queen's because she had him after a long break, got to be a present mother and was more relaxed.

I may have googled this.

How did she get to be a present mother when she had Andrew? She was The Queen by that point. Surely she didn’t get much “maternity leave.” What was she doing after Charles was born? Why couldn’t she be present for him?
AllThePogs · 15/01/2022 01:02

@WithANameLikeDaniCalifornia she was not going on various foreign tours and did spend more time with Andrew and Edward.

oviraptor21 · 15/01/2022 01:06

From the Elle link it seems to be that it's William that takes after Prince Phillip.
Harry does seem to share Hewitt's nose but I thought that rumour had been discredited a long time ago.

Andrew is the second son, fated never to be king, bound to slide down the order of succession, sure to be resentful of his older brother and of the restrictions a royal lives with. The Queen may have tried to make it up to him by assuring him he was special to her in spite of the fact that he came second to Charles.

There are photographs of Harry and Charles side by side which show how alike they are. Harry's colouring deceives people but look at their eyes, very slightly too close together, the tilt of the jaw. It is cruel to harp on about his paternity when it is patently not in doubt.
PopOfNothing · 15/01/2022 02:13

All these 'favourites' (sons, grandsons, granddaughters etc) of the Queen is just rubbish made up by the press. The only one I am inclined to believe is that Sophie is the favourite daughter-in-law but then again when her only competition is Camilla or exiled Fergie its hardly surprising.

JustLyra · 15/01/2022 02:17

@EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall

I thought Andrew was the spare? It wasn't until Kate was pregnant the last time that the queen changed it so succession didn't skip the females . Or so I thought

Andrew obviously hasn't always been a sleazy adult tosspot. I guess he could have been a really nice kid, maybe

Andrew was only the spare until William was born.
immersivereader · 15/01/2022 02:17

Charlie was hot when he was younger, crikey I'd have gone for him. Like a goofy mick jagger almost

noodlezoodle · 15/01/2022 02:18

@KeepingAnOpenMind

The Queen and Prince Philip were third cousins. Both of them pretty extraordinary people… but their kids? Don’t marry your cousins folks!
To be fair, third cousins is a relatively distant link. I bet you don't know your third cousins - you might even be married to one Grin

@MargosKaftan

I also read years ago that at some point in the 70s the Queen banned monopoly from Royal residences. I do wonder how heated that game got...
To be fair, if I was the Queen I'd ban Monopoly from the whole country.
Pixxie7 · 15/01/2022 04:58

When Charles and Anne were young she missed a lot of their childhood due to her royal duties so when Andrew came along she was more settled and was able to spend more time with him. Hence the rationale for him being her favourite.

nettie434 · 15/01/2022 05:04

I'm old enough to remember that when Prince Andrew was younger he dated an actor/photographer called Koo Stark. They eventually split up and media coverage was divided between those who said Andrew was put under pressure by the Queen because Koo had been in a film depicting lesbian bondage with a bit of SM (something like that anyway, definitely racy for the time) and those who said the relationship ended because of the huge media attention they received.

I think that the younger son role has always been very difficult for all monarchies. Prince Charles and Prince William both do the 'uneasy lies the head that wears the crown' thing but how do you prepare someone to be the 'spare' when there is a remote chance they might be needed to accede to the throne? I don't know what happens in other countries, especially those where girls were always equal to boys in the line of succession but I have a vague impression that not all the Monaco royal family are very dutiful.

There have always been media reports that Prince Andrew is very conscious of his status - for instance wanting to wear Rear Admiral dress at the Duke of Edinburgh's funeral - but at the same time feels very hard done by. The does fit in a bit with the idea that he has been indulged by the Queen, if not the wider royal family.

I am useless at seeing resemblances - I looked at Lord Porchester and thought he looked more like William - clearly impossible - but it was quite sad seeing all the photos of Lord Porchester and the Queen cheering at the races when the last few years have been more difficult for her.

I do find the posts criticising people for commenting on the life of a celebrity/royal a bit tiresome. It's clear from the thread titles what they are going to be about so there's no need to read them. It's different if individual comments are offensive or discriminatory but most are not.

A reminder that after the warming pan scandal (in which James was accused of smuggling a baby into Mary of Modena's bedchamber to ensure a Catholic would succeed the throne, the Home Secretary had to attend royal births to ensure there was no trickery. The last time that happened was for the birth of the Queen. Now that IS unnecessary scrutiny!

Self-Indulgent fuckwits are usually Mummy’s boys

Stephthegreat · 15/01/2022 05:41

Yes I’m confused why he’s the favourite. He seems to have gotten away with too much, not a good thing.

Stephthegreat · 15/01/2022 05:43

Just had a look at a pic of Lord Porchestor and, yes, there’s a real similarity between him and Andrew.

Joinedforthis22 · 15/01/2022 06:32

In that picture he looks like William, which is probably because all the aristocracy will have some shared recent(ish) ancestory! Harry meanwhile has a very strong resemblance to Diane's brother.

JustJam4Tea · 15/01/2022 06:34

Prince Philip was widely rumoured to have have had an affair, a long running one and a daughter. So why not the Queen?

BashStreetKid · 15/01/2022 07:12

@LondonWolf

You mean his wife, Sophie 'Fake Sheikh' Wessex ? The one who was trying to cash in on her position ?

Over twenty years ago now - two decades, exemplary, dutiful behaviour ever since as far as I know. Are people never to be forgiven? Are they to be judged on stupid shit they did years ago - where no one was hurt, forever?

This. How many people can say they've never done one stupid thing that still makes them break into a cold sweat occasionally?
