The royal family

Why is Andrew allegedly the Queen's "favourite son"?

I have read this a few times over the years and yesterday mentioned in most media outlets.
The Queen seems like a sensible sort with good judgement, and he has this reputation as a sleazy lazy twonk.
Of course I know from mn about the golden child syndrome who is actually pretty useless, but surely the Queen is above such things?
If anyone has any ideas on this I'd love to know because I'm stumped! (I'm also procrastinating because I'm on a deadline)

I had read that personality wise, he was closer to his father (sporty, outgoing, popular socially when younger), so perhaps easier to get along with than serious and not very sporty Charles? Not the oldest boy so perhaps over compensating for being "the spare".

Theres having favourites, and then there's just getting on better with one child because their company is "easier" to you with shared hobbies and interests etc.

@Sarahlou63

Hmmm. Looking at photos of Lord Porchester and Andrew there does seem to be a resemblance. There again, Harry is the spit of James Hewitt.
Harry looks like a young Prince Phillip. The only think he and Hewitt share is red hair (although a different shade). The press always choose photos where it's an angle that makes them alike!

I also read years ago that at some point in the 70s the Queen banned monopoly from Royal residences. I do wonder how heated that game got...

@Stiffcondomhat

Oh goodness I'd forgotten about the fake sheik biz. I clearly need to brush up on my Royals.
I would also suggest you don't google 'it's a royal knockout' and the subsequent press conference

No, Harry looks like Charles and Phillip, there's a photo of the Duke of Edinburgh on the cover of Paris Match in uniform from way back, he has reddish hair and beard, it really is the image of Harry, I can't link it but go and take a look...

He supposedly has a very jocular personality and a great sense of humour (something Fergie has also said about him - and they remain great friends).

He probably makes the queen laugh (something I doubt Charles and Edward do!)

@CoolShoeshine

I once heard on the tv it was because he had a different dad. Confused
That old chestnut 🥱

This shows a real resemblance to Andrew imo.

Theunamedcat · 14/01/2022 17:30

He is the harry of his generation

It would take a disaster for him to be king
He was rumoured to have a different father
There have been scandals
He is the party Prince

Theunamedcat · 14/01/2022 17:31

And Harry was rumoured to be his mums favourite too

notacooldad · 14/01/2022 17:36

He wasn't just indulged. He was rude and really horrible to staff at various royal residences and nothing was done to rein him in. I agree it's contributed to his greater sense of arrogance but who's to blame ? Oh, that would be his mother for not dealing with it
I didnt say he was indulged. I was following on from this comment Because parents who indulge useless golden children tend to be dicks, and she doesn't seem like a dick

I do get the impression, and I know that I could be wrong , that he is indulged by his close friends and people that in the past wanted to e associated with him for who he was and his position. I dont think many would tell him no to something.
As for reeling him in, who knows. I'm not putting the blame anywhere.🤷‍♀️
He may just have arrogant prick syndrome and would have behaved like that even if he was brought up in a totally different environment
I'm sure we all have come across a bolshy middle aged man who think the world is theirs!

Have you heard the phrase "damning with faint praise"?

NiceShrubbery · 14/01/2022 18:35

@Stiffcondomhat

Because parents who indulge useless golden children tend to be dicks, and she doesn't seem like a dick.
They're all useless by definition but Andrew fought in the Falklands so superficially legitimized the RF's existence for a few years, which is more than her other offspring have done.

She isn't a dick, but is extremely self-interested and so is Andrew. She sees the best of herself in him.

KeepingAnOpenMind · 14/01/2022 18:40

The Queen and Prince Philip were third cousins.
Both of them pretty extraordinary people… but their kids?
Don’t marry your cousins folks!

sadpapercourtesan · 14/01/2022 18:43

That smarmy sleazy charm that he's used on young girls all his adult life probably looked quite different on a young child.

I have always had the impression that the Queen was quite a cold and distant mother, though, so I don't know how much truth there is in the idea that he was her favourite.

He really isn’t. Same colour hair and that’s it, but also the same colour hair as Diana’s brother. He looks very much like Charles , much more so than William does.
RandomUsernameHere · 14/01/2022 18:54

I very much doubt it's still the case Grin

Stiffcondomhat · 14/01/2022 18:55

Oh to be a fly on the wall at that meeting!

Juicy. Where is it said she is extremely self interested? Its probably true. She probably grew up being told she was a superior being to all mankind, the rest of the RF are told the same presumably.
I think she's certainly extremely interested in keeping reign and the existence of a monarchy.

LondonWolf · 14/01/2022 19:35

You mean his wife, Sophie 'Fake Sheikh' Wessex ? The one who was trying to cash in on her position ?

Over twenty years ago now - two decades, exemplary, dutiful behaviour ever since as far as I know. Are people never to be forgiven? Are they to be judged on stupid shit they did years ago - where no one was hurt, forever?

EdithWeston · 14/01/2022 19:51

Yes, it took the Wessexes a good couple of decades of turning up and doing the Stuff before they were rehabilitated.

I think the work that the Countess does internationally on VAWG is sadly under-reported here.

CPL593H · 14/01/2022 20:01

God, I'm glad I'm not royal. Speculating wildly about the previous sexual morality of a 95 year old woman who none of us know, when there is zero, really zero, evidence she was ever interested in anyone other than her late husband (from her early teens) let alone having children by them.

I think Andrew came along when she was able to be at home and spend time with him as a baby/toddler. Maybe he is thus more bothered about her, consequently. Other than that, search me.

I think they're a good example of what Harry and Megan could (have been) be. Stepped out of line, got bollocked, took a bit of time but then got heads down and worked hard to represent the Queen.
EmmaPaella · 14/01/2022 20:26

Edward was Phillip's favourite. Andrew the Queen's because she had him after a long break, got to be a present mother and was more relaxed.

I may have googled this.

ancientgran · 14/01/2022 20:37

Charles and Anne were very young (3 and 1 I think) when the King died and their mother became Queen. She was young and probably grieving for her father and coming to terms with her role. When she had Andrew she had been Queen for a few years, 8 I think, and she was older and probably more confident to do things her way. I remember at the time there were photos of her working at her desk and Prince Andrew crawling round so I think his early years were a bit less formal than Charles and Anne's.

I have no idea if he is her favourite but I think the early stories about how happy she was with this new baby started the story.

His service in the Falklands war might have added to it, nothing quite like the imminent risk of your child dying to make you realise how much you love them.

Like the Queen I have 4 adult children, 3 boys and 1 girl, I probably always have a favourite but they take it in turns and I bet the Queen is the same.
