The passport/driving licence stuff was enhanced by Oprah's dramatic reaction. She was hamming it up all the way through.

Gwrach · 13/11/2021 12:38

The passport thing was nothing but a victim narrative to make out she was held captive.

I was married to a high commissioners son of another commonwealth country and held a diplomatic passport. To be honest I never fucking saw the thing. The PA's had them all (good job really I loose everything) I never even held a boarding pass for some international flights. I went car - lounge - boarding.
Then off flight - walked through VIP lounge - VIP passport control and then out of the airport in to a car.

You aren't held captive 😂

Gwrach. Presumably you soon got up to speed about how it all worked?

StormzyinaTCup · 13/11/2021 12:44

I would love a to have been a fly on the wall in the meetings (and to have access to the texts) between Oprah and MM!

It so happens that two of my siblings have diplomatic passports. They always have them to themselves, and give them over when making work related trips and then get them back again. They book their own personal trips. They still use the diplomatic passports with the children etc. They go in their own entrance at check in and queue etc. But they DO keep their own passports.
SnottyLottie · 13/11/2021 12:52

I suppose the act of having to ask for your passport to go and visit your family and friends would be grating. Especially if you are used to flying about at your own leisure previously. And would she have to justify it? I’m sure I remember a few articles popping up about how much she flies around (eg the baby shower trip etc) and how the Firm questioned why she was doing this or that. It must be frustrating for a fully grown and independent woman having to rely on all these other people when previously she booked her own flights and just headed to the airport with her own bags and passport.

Once she was married and a “working” royal I think it’s fair enough that she’d have to run it by someone. Not justify it exactly, but make them aware and check that they’ve not scheduled her in to open a children’s centre that day or something. And I think that would be the case regardless of who had her passport. You can’t have her team not knowing when she’s planning on being away.
rubicscubicle · 13/11/2021 13:01

@Aspiringmatriarch

Agree *@rubicscubicle*. On the one hand you have a single comment from Harry and on the other, the revolting behaviour of Thomas and Samantha and I believe another member of the Markle clan as well. How you could even compare the two is just beyond me.

And to repeat myself: for anyone who feels the letter Meghan wrote was cynical, how would you suggest dealing with emotional abuse from a close family member conducted via the tabloids?

I agree.

I cannot see the letter as particularly cynical. Good on her for anticipating deceit and she was correct.

I just saw TM now on GBN interview, and he claims he wants reconciliation, while going on and on about MM. Most of what he says is untrue and just gaslightling. He is just clearly full of hate if anything. He was talking to Dan Wootton who was beaming with cruelty and spite.

Papyrus · 13/11/2021 13:09

I think part of the issue is that yes, Meghan was used to travelling freely all the time, and maybe expected that to continue. But possibly hadn't factored in that as a member of the RF she how had police protection officers providing security 24/7 and this is incredibly expensive when a royal travels abroad.

So the palace are going to want an overview, and maybe try to limit what they might see as unnecessary travel.

I agree with the poster who said Oprah was hamming it up.

Serenster · 13/11/2021 13:13

Seeing someone who had been married for around 3yrs, doing their own thing a handful of times, is hardly a gotcha moment

Actually only 19 months between her wedding and leaving. She racked up nine personal trips that we know of in that time, so once every two months on average. Given that she also went on three official tours in that time, and was of course she was heavily pregnant and then recuperating from the birth, her real opportunities to travel were also reduced. She really does come across as being under any restrictions in her personal travel.

——————

Following their May 2018 wedding the couple honeymooned at a mystery location described by sources as somewhere “in the sun.” They were rumored to have flown to the Seychelles.

The couple also visited Italy twice, including once in August 2018, when actor George Clooney sent a private jet to pick them up.

In August 2018 she travelled to Toronto to visit Jessica Mulroney.

In February 2019, the Duchess of Sussex was in New York for her baby shower.

From Aug. 6 to Aug. 12, 2019, the couple traveled to Spain by private jet for Markle’s 38th birthday.

Later that month, the Sussexes also went on a trip to Nice, France, on Elton John’s private jet.

In September 2019 she traveled to watch the US Open.

Late in 2019 they travelled to Canada for a break.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex also went on three official royal tours in which they visited Morocco, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Tonga and Fiji.

Applesonthelawn · 13/11/2021 13:15

I thought the letter was written for public consumption from the first reading because of the way it over-explained every situation in a way that would be unnecessary if you were discussing ongoing situations with someone who already knew their own side of it. There were no short cuts in the communication, no assumption that he already knew things that he clearly did already know. It was written for the benefit of people who did not know the history. Of course it would be mortifying to receive such a devious letter from your own daughter.

EdithWeston · 13/11/2021 13:15

I doubt the Palace would seek to limit it - look at the habits of many of the Royals (from Princess Margaret onwards)

But yes, the security team would want to check each proposed trip, make a risk assessment and decide what level of protection is required. And if that includes sending a team with them, then they need to be on the same flight (possibly an advance party as well)

That must seem very strange when you first encounter it - especially as it would also cover just nipping out in Londion etc.

But presumably she is well used to it, and appreciative of it now, as they have retained it

Serenster · 13/11/2021 13:16

Also, if Meghan chafed at her staff holding her passport for safekeeping and administrative ease, she may well want to rethink her presidential ambitions. They don’t even get to spend their own money:

Wow, a full 9 times in a year and a half. What a lot of travelling ! lol.

Most of it reported by the rags mind you.

The same ones who told us that her security is 20M, then later toned it down to 2M.

BTW, MM produced a 21 page defence and again, media and on here skimming over tiara gate.

Well, I wouldn’t have played him at his own game and aired my dirty laundry on TV for a start. Nor would I expect my friends to release private and confidential details to the media. If they did they would no longer be my friends.

Serenster · 13/11/2021 13:23

Maybe not by your standards Rubicscubicle, but it is laughable to suggest a personal trip overseas roughly every two months in a short period where you also had a baby and travelled extensively for work means you are in any way restricted in your ability to travel.

SpidersAreShitheads · 13/11/2021 13:30

@tasmaniandevil

Rubicscubicle many posters on this thread with more patience than I have spent time correcting your so called facts.

But like many of Megan's defenders who push the conspiracy theory of William and Kate uniting to bring her down, you will never accept she is the mistress of her own demise.

This in a nutshell.

If you're a big fan of Meghan then totally fine, we all have our own idea of what we think is acceptable behaviour. But the mental contortions some go through to excuse her repeated lies makes it utterly pointless even having a conversation.

Honestly too I think she might have been better served by telling the palace staff right from the outset that her family was a nightmare, she didn’t want them at the wedding, and could they help her in best managing this. I think she had a lot of deserved sympathy over their antics that’s easily could have been harnessed to explain the situation.

It came across like there was a lot of head in the sand going on - the half siblings didn’t know that they weren’t going to be invited until they didn’t receive invitations, Thomas assumed he’d be walking her down the aisle etc - it came across like they’d stored up some bombs to explode at a later date by not wanting to admit the issues.

And you can apply the same logic for anti Meghan people too.

loislovesstewie · 13/11/2021 13:37

I wish I could take a break abroad every other month.

MrsFin · 13/11/2021 13:38

I would say it is pretty emotionally abusive when Harry spoke about his family being the family she never had. How did the Markles feel about that. That didn't work out too well in the end.

Meghan doesn't have a lot of family though, does she. Harry has a sibling and loads of cousins all close in age, and just close. He has grand parents, aunts and uncles, great aunts and uncles, nephews, niece, first cousins once removed etc.
Meghan has her mum, her dad and a couple of much older half siblings.

rubicscubicle · 13/11/2021 13:39

Once more, how do you know they were a nightmare before Harry. TM featured on the Tig. There were no reports regarding MM other relationships. Why are you so sure they were always a nightmare?

Thomas was invited to walk her down the isle. She had not seen the siblings in over a decade, no report of them at previous wedding either.
