could not believe it when I saw the advert for it last night. so PW is presenting this thing. the same Prince who flies all over the world.
obviously won't be watching as him and DA lecturing people about climate change is so hypocritical.

I don’t think anyone said that Samcro, we just had some people questioning who Chris Packham was who clearly had no idea 🤣

derxa · 10/10/2021 14:40

@Aspiringmatriarch

You just used the phrase yourself! It means increasing biodiversity, basically.
It means different things to different people. Explain how you would rewild the Highlands?
Aspiringmatriarch · 10/10/2021 17:04

I'm sure there are lots of experts who could answer that question better than me, and I'm equally sure you could Google them. There are lots of different approaches such as fencing certain areas off from deers for a time, to allow regeneration of native trees. Anyway, just because you may disagree with something doesn't make CP a charlatan. He's a very passionate campaigner and rubs some people up the wrong way, so what. Not really the point of the thread and a bit rich from someone who complained about posters being 'mean spirited' towards William and Kate.

Roussette · 10/10/2021 17:16

CP's petition about rewilding was supported by many scientists, they signed it, and would understand the subject.

He's a man with a passion and I like that. He's been harrassed, abused, intimidated and now his Land Rover outside his house set on fire. This is an interesting interview with him.

Why should, for instance, all Balmoral's 27,000 acres purely be used for grouse and stag shooting? Why can't they give some up for rewilding, fenced off areas. It would count in William's favour with his Earthshot if he made this happen.
Of course it won't though, the RF are far too protective of their land.

Explain how you would rewild the Highlands?
Nowhere have I read that he is asking for all the Highlands to be rewilded! The link above explains a lot.

Here's a description of some rewilded areas in Europe. Really compelling.

derxa · 10/10/2021 17:29

There are lots of different approaches such as fencing certain areas off from deers for a time, to allow regeneration of native trees No it means killing deer.

Roussette · 10/10/2021 17:33

For you derxa, within that website is Affric Highlands, Scotland.

Really worth a read especially the click through under Rewilding Vision. Lots of local landowners are on board.

Do you know of local opposition?

smilesy · 10/10/2021 17:34

The Earthshot programmes, if anyone bothered to watch them, did indeed talk about re- wilding, so it will be interesting to see what, if any, action the RF take. Chris Packham thinks it may have been hunt supporters that set fire to a car and burnt down his gate (I’m not sure it was his Land Rover) It happened before the petition was presented. But obviously carried out by morons. There was an interesting article on the BBC news feed today that talked about how most of our biodiversity in the UK was lost during the Industrial Revolution, but that ours is pretty stable at the moment. Increasing it would, of course, be a really good thing.

derxa · 10/10/2021 17:44

Here's a description of some rewilded areas in Europe. Really compelling. It's all very vague.
Look I have an endless fight against people trying to get planning permission to build houses next to my fields. I don't drain my boggy field. I don't use fertiliser on my fields. We've got badgers, foxes and a huge range of birdlife. Ironically enough this present government is obsessed with rewilding and Carrie Johnson has the PM's ear (and other bits of his anatomy)

Rewilding is a trendy word which means whatever agenda you have. In this case hatred of the monarchy.

Roussette · 10/10/2021 17:47

Chris Packham hates the Monarchy? No, I just think he's a man with a passion for conservation.
Well done for your natural habitat, good to hear.

smilesy · 10/10/2021 18:06

YesI think you might have slightly the wrong idea here, derxa. Like I said, Earthshot talks about re- wilding as one area to help bio diversity. Chris Packham is just singling them out as a large landowner. As I also said, I believe that Charles is already changing some of the habitat at Sandringham to increase biodiversity, so who knows what they might do in the future 🤷‍♀️ I’m really glad to hear about the wildlife you have and that you are a defender of the countryside but it is true that a more global effort is needed. Not sure it’s just a trendy thing, it is a real solution to a problem. It has become more prominent lately though, you are right.

YesI think you might have slightly the wrong idea here, derxa
No I'm perfectly clear in my understanding of the whole business.

smilesy · 10/10/2021 18:16

I meant about Chris Packham, derxa. Sorry I want clear.

derxa · 10/10/2021 18:22

@smilesy

Ok no problem.

@upinaballoon

I've got b---- grey squirrels.
🤣🤣
CathyorClaire · 10/10/2021 21:43

Late to this party but Wills parading alleged environmental credentials is as laughable as his Papa doing it.

Until he stops shooting for fun and indoctrinating his eight year old into doing the same he's inevitably talking to the hand.

I'd quite like to see wolves at Anmer though...

derxa · 10/10/2021 21:48

I'd quite like to see wolves at Anmer though...
I know this is supposed to be a hilarious joke but people actually want wolves to reappear in Scotland. It's a sort of cultural imperialism

julieca · 10/10/2021 21:54

The RF own more land than the land taken up by every single house in Britain.
And too much of that land is grouse moors. Great if you want to shoot grouse, but terrible for biodiversity.

upinaballoon · 10/10/2021 22:28

I wish I still had a relative who shot pheasants. I must go look in my local farm shop. Thank you for reminding me. I haven't ever eaten squirrel. Do they taste like rat?

Don't any members of the Royal Family ever eat pheasant or venison?

I went to a rural part of the USA several years ago and hunting elk was something done there--I think it was elk.

If members of the RF are called bird-murderers, I think people who work in slaughterhouses, but we have to nimby-pimbly call them meat processing plants, are pig-murderers and sheep-murderers.

julieca · 10/10/2021 23:14

There is nothing wrong with eating pheasant. There is something wrong that 6% of the UK land mass is occupied with grouse moors. It is terrible for biodiversity.

Samcro · 11/10/2021 09:41

its weird that people will get upset about pheasants dying, yet eat chicken,
Disclaimer, I don't eat pheasant as I don't like it, but country lad dh does.

OP posts:
julieca · 11/10/2021 09:53

Who does that refer to?
I have eaten pheasant. No issues with pheasants dying.
But 6% of the landmass covered by grouse moors is dreadful for biodiversity.
The RF clearly do not give a stuff about the environment.

smilesy · 11/10/2021 13:38

@julieca. You are correct in saying that an excess and mismanagement of grouse moors is dreadful for biodiversity. However, your figure applies to the whole of the UK, not the RF’s private estates (Balmoral and Sandringham) ,so I’m not sure it is entirely the RF’s fault as you seem to imply in your rather sweeping statement. I agree that they need to be seen to do as much as they can, but the 6% (actually I read that it was 8%) figure is not all within their private estates.

julieca · 11/10/2021 13:51

No it is not all within their private estates and I never said it was. But they do have large grouse moors within their estate. They are private shooting ranges. They could land the manage much better to promote biodiversity. They won't.
