Harry and Meghan statement on Afghanistan

Mummyoflittledragon · 17/08/2021 18:42

“The world is exceptionally fragile right now.
As we all feel the many layers of pain due to the situation in Afghanistan, we are left speechless.
As we all watch the growing humanitarian disaster in Haiti, snd the threat of it worsening after last weekend’s earthquake, we are left heartbroken.
And as we all witness the continuing global health crisis, exacerbated by the new variants and constant misinformation, we are left scared.
When any person or community suffers, a piece of each of us does so with them, whether we realise it or not. And though we are not meant to live in a state of suffering, we are as a people, being conditioned to accept it. It’s easy to find ourselves feeling powerless, but we can put our values into action - together.
To start, we encourage you to join us in supporting a number of organisations doing critical work. We also urge those in positions of global influence to rapidly advance the humanitarian dialogues that are expected to take place this fall at multilateral gatherings such as the U.N. General Assembly and the Leader’s Summit.
As an international community, it is the decisions we make now - to alleviate suffering among those we know and those we may never meet - that will prove our humanity.”

H&M are being criticised for making this about them and for not calling out Biden, notably the FLOTUS is report as being a personal friend of H.

Angelina Jolie joined Instagram to make a statement about Afghanistan, if someone wants to be taken seriously and not ridiculed this is a pretty good example of how to do it.

"I was on the border of Afghanistan two weeks before 9/11, where I met Afghan refugees who had fled the Taliban. This was twenty years ago.

It is sickening to watch Afghans being displaced yet again out of the fear and uncertainty that has gripped their country.

To spend so much time and money, to have blood shed and lives lost only to come to this, is a failure almost impossible to understand.

Watching for decades how Afghan refugees - some of the most capable people in the world - are treated like a burden is also sickening. Knowing that if they had the tools and respect, how much they would do for themselves. And meeting so many women and girls who not only wanted an education, but fought for it.

Like others who are committed, I will not turn away. I will continue to look for ways to help. And I hope you’ll join me."

Apparently there is trillions worth of minerals in Afghanistan - gold in particular being developed at the moment,. Between the Taliban and China and Russia - who will certainly get their mits in - the Afghans and everyone else don't stand a chance. I imagine they will want a stable country though, so they can export it for their use, whether that means by guns or other means time will tell.

Yes that's the way to do it, not issuing a mumbo jumbo statement full of awful overblown rhetoric. Angelina also has some person experience there , unlike M and H.
SwimmingUnderwater · 21/08/2021 10:47

@Dreamstate

God how pathetic the length people go to disect everything they do and say. Do you do this with other charities? Or other statements made by other famous people....

How sad! Meanwhile they are living their lives and your spending your time and energy on them lol

Unfortunately they aren't living their lives quietly. They seek the limelight constantly, putting out poorly worded statements that sound incredibly patronising. They are only interested in themselves and lining their own nest. They don't care who they hurt or what damage they do in their personal lives, yet bleat on about 'humanitarianism'. They are totally lacking in empathy. This is why the charity angle annoys me personally so much. Charity begins at home.
OverByYer · 21/08/2021 11:10

I’m not a huge fan of Angelina Jolie but that is how to write a statement. Personal abs impactive.

Mummyoflittledragon · 21/08/2021 11:19

That is a brilliant and impactful statement from Angelina Jolie.

BrilloPaddy · 21/08/2021 11:53

That's so well done by Angelina Jolie.

No pseudowords in sight.

Gilmorehill · 21/08/2021 12:20

Angelina Jolie has spent a lot of time on the ground with refugees in many countries and has shown a commitment to helping women’s development and empowerment. It’s only natural she should make a statement and she made an excellent one. She definitely deserves to be called a humanitarian.

Yes it is It’s not all about how she feels and how it’s affected her unlike certain other statements

The statement is all worded by Meghan, no input from Harry it seems. You can tell from the language.
Mummy194 · 22/08/2021 18:49

How on earth does Angelina Jolie have more right than a soldier who served in the Afghan war to speak about this situation.

What on earth has 5% got to do with H&M charities actually? Is that a thing now, go about on a which hunt, point out all the Americans who have foundations, charities etc. and call them out as crooked? Oh look over there, Buffet, Soros, etc. any American philanthropist, oh they are crooks aren't they, because they are based in the US. This is ridiculous

There are posters who bring this up in almost all the threads about H&M, and it seems like a strategy to smear and make sure this rumour stick. No paper or anyone has ever accused them of misappropriation of funds and they keep an eagle eye on them.

I don't know why Mumsnet keep these posts on, when they delete some posts about other members as libel.

Coronateachingagain · 22/08/2021 19:09

My latest question about this pair is, why on earth would you need to fly to or from a polo "charity event" by private jet? What would be the urgency or the reason? On top of all that unnecessary polluting requirements for this polo event like flying the horses. So much for Harry's "green principles", as long as he can keep flying by private jet. It is all a very well crafted intricate boondoggle.

Oh and @Mummy194 so it looks like you accept that they give about 5% to charity and the rest is for them TaX FREE, because you are criticising the people questioning why this? You may know better. The thing is, there is not much merit in this but they seem to believe they are entitled to a lot more credit than they deserve. Do as I say not as I do. You can't really trust this pair that they don't have a personal agenda for every move they make can you.

Nanasueathome · 22/08/2021 19:16

Angelina Jolie is a special envoy for United Nations High Commission for Refugees and has done a lot of work in this role

Coronateachingagain · 22/08/2021 19:21

And whatever money Harry "donated" through his foundation just pays for this boondoggle for a number of years. Tax free. And also provides tick the box for the 5% so the rest of the money is tax free too. Very tax efficient, very clever but out of reach for us normal people.

Which rumour? It is no rumour, this is how foundations work in the US, as someone explained previously
Mummy194 · 22/08/2021 19:33

No, I obviously do not.
As I said, this is a speculation and posters trying to create a rumour by constantly repeating it. It has nothing to do with H&M because you have no idea how their foundation work. There are actually lots of foundations that have shown us how they donate more than that percentage, but the posters have deliberately decided that H&M should fall on the negative side.

Oldbutstillgotit · 22/08/2021 20:00

Well maybe they could clarify how much they are donating ? 5% ? 10%? 20%?

Mummyoflittledragon · 22/08/2021 20:09

@Oldbutstillgotit

@Oldbutstillgotit That would be extremely useful, especially as philanthropy and charity in the US doesn’t mean the same thing as it does over here… Or else they could do what the normal person on the street does and pay a decent amount of tax?

It’s been illustrated on this thread that the rich start foundations as a money making machines. They’ve been crystal clear in their actions they want the super rich lifestyle. Usually the most obvious explanation is the correct one.

Coronateachingagain · 22/08/2021 20:14

Not to mention it may not even be 5% or whatever percentage in practical terms if they are then going to get goodies, free passes to play in expensive polo matches or free private jet trips in return.

Ee why aren't you brining up Prince Charles and his latest preaching about being environmentally friendly and telling us plebs we have to suck up the cost meanwhile he still swans about in his private jet, all the buildings the Queen owns is exempt from being brought up to the same environmental standards

Yet all you can do is cheery pick who you'll pick on right....
