Harry and Meghan statement on Afghanistan

“The world is exceptionally fragile right now.
As we all feel the many layers of pain due to the situation in Afghanistan, we are left speechless.
As we all watch the growing humanitarian disaster in Haiti, snd the threat of it worsening after last weekend’s earthquake, we are left heartbroken.
And as we all witness the continuing global health crisis, exacerbated by the new variants and constant misinformation, we are left scared.
When any person or community suffers, a piece of each of us does so with them, whether we realise it or not. And though we are not meant to live in a state of suffering, we are as a people, being conditioned to accept it. It’s easy to find ourselves feeling powerless, but we can put our values into action - together.
To start, we encourage you to join us in supporting a number of organisations doing critical work. We also urge those in positions of global influence to rapidly advance the humanitarian dialogues that are expected to take place this fall at multilateral gatherings such as the U.N. General Assembly and the Leader’s Summit.
As an international community, it is the decisions we make now - to alleviate suffering among those we know and those we may never meet - that will prove our humanity.”

H&M are being criticised for making this about them and for not calling out Biden, notably the FLOTUS is report as being a personal friend of H.

What do mumsnetters think?

Who writes this shit? They have no clue about the many layers of pain people are experiencing in Afghanistan. I wish they'd shut up and get on with doing what they wanted and that was being private. They are the worst kind of virtue signallers.

adrianmolesmole · 18/08/2021 16:29

@smilesy

And before anyone points out, making statements about humanitarian crises isn't "political"

I agree the humanitarian crisis in Haiti is not political, but the situation in Afghanistan has been directly created by the withdrawal of western troops so that would definitely be off limits.

But they could highlight the danger to women's rights in Afghanistan while avoiding criticising western govt policies. They know how to walk that fine line.

But they only do things when they are paid to, not off their own backs or moved by empathy.

StormzyinaTCup · 18/08/2021 16:38

Just thought I would leave this here, I suspect it's another fluff piece but time will tell.

"They say that the proof is in the pudding, and what we are about to see is that pudding.". Yayyy!!

'the era of visibility," double Yayyy!!

I do wish people would stop using singular verbs when they should use plurals. Some of the grammar on here is a crime against English.

upinaballoon · 18/08/2021 16:50

No, the proof isn't in the pudding. The proof of the pudding is in the eating.

... and spitting feathers means to be thirsty.

...and some members of the RF went to Scotland last week because they always do and because 12th August is the start of the grouse-shooting season, which will start another set of ungrammatical quarrelsome wittering by people who assume that everyone who ever shot a pigeon or a pheasant or a grouse must own about 20 million acres somewhere and treat servants like slaves when in fact quite a few working class Joe Soaps in this country also shoot, and eat what they shot.

'oh come on. people just want to rip them apart. this thread proves that whatever they do they will be hated(awaits Meghan being blamed for the problems in Afghanistan )'

You must try to debate the points instead of this silly 'hate' narrative.

Harry had already made a perfectly good statement. They didn't need to add to it with the 'we all feel' crap. They'll be writing notes on bananas next.

They are extraordinarily pretentious.

And no, I do not blame Markle for 'the problems in Afghanistan' Confused

Roussette · 18/08/2021 17:40

No, you just blame her for a statement that... for what it's worth... has generated a lot of interest and talk of donations to some very worthy causes. She's Meghan by the way.

DeRigueurMortis · 18/08/2021 17:40

Personally I think they are free to comment on what they like and I do think there would be people criticising them if they didn't comment at all.

That said I didn't think it was a good/well written statement - but that's simply my opinion. Other people liked it very much.

They certainly have adopted a very specific "style" to their communications, one that's very different from that which we are used to from members of the RF.

I don't doubt that's very deliberate. Both to appeal to a US audience and to be distinctive from the U.K. RF.

I can't really get flustered about that...

SwimmingUnderwater · 18/08/2021 17:42

I don’t care what they say or what they do so long as they stop using their titles and whining about how hard done by they are.

smilesy · 18/08/2021 17:43

But they only do things when they are paid to, not off their own backs or moved by empathy.

I don’t want to get into a “but they did this”type of argument, but the above statement is not true. The DoC went out to the vigil for the woman murdered by the police officer. I really do think that any mention of what is happen in Afghanistan would be seen by many as political. I have already agreed with you that the humanitarian crisis in Haiti would not be.

Roussette · 18/08/2021 17:47

whining about how hard done by they are

Apart from the OW interview back in March which I didn't see as 'whining', where have they been doing this since then?

I agree it is silly that people hate them so much.
Oldbutstillgotit · 18/08/2021 17:52

There’s that word “ hate “ again . Why does criticism translate as hate ?

Gilmorehill · 18/08/2021 17:55

I agree. It’s very tiresome.
Oldbutstillgotit · 18/08/2021 17:56

I don’t hate Harry and Meghan . I don’t know them. I dislike a lot of their behaviour. The OW interview was awful for example .
Harry’s statement about Afghanistan was good ( as i already said) but the joint one was - to me- meaningless drivel . Someone says it had encouraged donations ; if so that is great and a link would be helpful as a quick google hasn’t shown anything .
I would also like to know more about the 40 x 40 but, again, having trouble finding names , process etc .
Questioning behaviour does not equate to hate.

Roussette · 18/08/2021 17:59

It's tweets from various people and various organisations.

More books are coming out that Harry has ‘written’. I doubt very much they will be anything but whining going on recent performance ‘Poor me’ ‘My poor mother’, ‘My poor wife’ , ‘My neglectful father’ etc etc.
Oldbutstillgotit · 18/08/2021 18:00

Ok. Maybe I follow the wrong people so would be grateful for some names .

You said they are whining about how hard done by they are. Saying to me about a book that hasn't even been written tells me they aren't whining.
Because it hasn't happened
Because you don't know what it will say.

Gilmorehill · 18/08/2021 18:13

If they care so much, perhaps they could offer a couple of rooms in their Montecito mansion. This has only crossed my mind, because as I sat and watched the news just now, I thought if there was a scheme to foster Afghan children, I’d go for it.

Oldbutstillgotit · 18/08/2021 18:17

The People have printed an extract of the updated Finding Freedom ( you know , the updated version that OS denied….) . Anyway , according to him ( ie Harry and Meghan) they are disappointed that HM “ did not take full ownership” of the allegations made in the OW interview.

Yes, me too. My opinion of them would totally change if they actually inconvenienced themselves to any degree.
Coronateachingagain · 18/08/2021 18:21

Pure drivel. They need to keep moving to attract some PR. Don't expect any actual doing or giving away though. It looks like they are trying to establish their own West Coast based "House of Sussex" by issuing "statements". Good business model ah!

I read somewhere that M was astounded that all of the family weren’t on the phone apologising to her following the OW interview straight away. Talk about reading the room..
