Harry and Meghan statement on Afghanistan

Mummyoflittledragon · 17/08/2021 18:42

“The world is exceptionally fragile right now.
As we all feel the many layers of pain due to the situation in Afghanistan, we are left speechless.
As we all watch the growing humanitarian disaster in Haiti, snd the threat of it worsening after last weekend’s earthquake, we are left heartbroken.
And as we all witness the continuing global health crisis, exacerbated by the new variants and constant misinformation, we are left scared.
When any person or community suffers, a piece of each of us does so with them, whether we realise it or not. And though we are not meant to live in a state of suffering, we are as a people, being conditioned to accept it. It’s easy to find ourselves feeling powerless, but we can put our values into action - together.
To start, we encourage you to join us in supporting a number of organisations doing critical work. We also urge those in positions of global influence to rapidly advance the humanitarian dialogues that are expected to take place this fall at multilateral gatherings such as the U.N. General Assembly and the Leader’s Summit.
As an international community, it is the decisions we make now - to alleviate suffering among those we know and those we may never meet - that will prove our humanity.”

H&M are being criticised for making this about them and for not calling out Biden, notably the FLOTUS is report as being a personal friend of H.

What do mumsnetters think?

I didn't buy his book the first time, I won't be this time either.

OS
The 'thrive chapter' Grin.

It is, as always, painful to witness their oversharing, handwringing nonsense. They write this drivel about their horrid time doing royal duties yet have 'layers of pain' about Afghanistan. Won't someone tell them to stfu. Tone deaf.

summercupcake · 18/08/2021 19:23

Oh I wish they would just SHUSH and go away!

adrianmolesmole · 18/08/2021 20:07

@smilesy

But they only do things when they are paid to, not off their own backs or moved by empathy.

I don’t want to get into a “but they did this”type of argument, but the above statement is not true. The DoC went out to the vigil for the woman murdered by the police officer. I really do think that any mention of what is happen in Afghanistan would be seen by many as political. I have already agreed with you that the humanitarian crisis in Haiti would not be.

Yeah but that was very obviously a PR stunt, in response to criticism of the RF after the OW interview. They've never done anything "spontaneous" like that since.
Butteredtoast55 · 18/08/2021 20:23

I am sure they are looking at the news stories and feeling appalled and horrified at what is going on in the world. Harry must feel especially affected by the situation in Afghanistan, given his time in the armed forces. However, I think pretty much everyone I can think of is also appalled and horrified by the troubles of the world, so frankly, their statement adds nothing. I don't need the Sussexes to tell me how to be a good humanitarian, thank you.
Its' also as dull as bloody ditchwater and smacks of self importance. They do wang on, don't they?

Surely if you say you’ve learned lessons, you must have made mistakes?
Mummyoflittledragon · 18/08/2021 21:34

@Roussette

whining about how hard done by they are

Apart from the OW interview back in March which I didn't see as 'whining', where have they been doing this since then?

What about back in May when Harry spoke critically of his father? Approx a month after the death and funeral of Charles’ own father.

Coronateachingagain · 18/08/2021 22:12

"Thrive Chapter", "Era of visibility" !? Who did they hire to write all this drivel - maybe it works in America.

@Butteredtoast55 spot on. Smacks of self importance, but it is getting quite funny! And everybody can have a life of "humanitarism" (just to recall their way of putting things). Especially if you can afford to buy in an £11m house in Montecito!!

Coronateachingagain · 18/08/2021 22:17

You did not see it as whining from a multi-millionaire thirty something complaining to the world about Daddy cutting him off. Right. Or let's wait until his new "book" comes out.
Roussette · 18/08/2021 22:18

@Mummyoflittledragon
No different to Charles criticising how his parents brought him up in the Dimbleby interview, then

Quite a lot of difference.

Nice pick (I wonder!), but not enough to deflect the point. And additionally the (big) difference is he did not quit and did not get that big either.

CauliflowerCheese30 · 18/08/2021 22:37

Quite a bit of difference, he hasn't carried it on, unlike Harry and Meghan, even now in Scobie's new book/ new chapters, that he denied was happening, and he regretted doing it too.

Roussette · 18/08/2021 22:38

Very similar. AFAIC.

CauliflowerCheese30 · 18/08/2021 22:41

Well, you might be able to see it, but I don't. I don't see Prince Charles using someone to write a book for him to continue his issues with his upbringing or his treatment from his family.

SirVixofVixHall · 18/08/2021 22:42

@JaniieJones

It's almost poetic. 'As we all watch, as we all witness, as we all feel..'. Confused

We need some rousing Hollywood music playing in the background to accompany it.

We can but be thankful their dialogue has finally expanded from 'shining lights' and being 'authentic'.

Does seem odd that they haven't criticised the rushed withdrawal by the US causing the mayhem and panic isn't it, can guarantee if Trump was still in power they'd have found their voices to do so.

As always, tone deaf gushing guff.

So agree.
MrsFin · 18/08/2021 22:48

@Gilmorehill

If they care so much, perhaps they could offer a couple of rooms in their Montecito mansion. This has only crossed my mind, because as I sat and watched the news just now, I thought if there was a scheme to foster Afghan children, I’d go for it.

It IS possible to foster Afghan children, or any other child refugees.

Gilmorehill · 18/08/2021 23:16

Honestly I would love to. We’re going to move to a much bigger house in a month. We have an extra bedroom and bathroom. My dh is Muslim so that might help. (I haven’t discussed this with him though Grin) I just couldn’t help contrasting my thoughts of practical help with that word salad statement.

summercupcake · 18/08/2021 23:23

Don't be stupid...it's so completely different.

UsedUpUsername · 18/08/2021 23:27

@PicsInRed

At least they made a statement.

If they criticised Biden they'd be accused of politics.

They didn't criticise him so they're accused of politics.

🤷‍♀️

Lol I don’t think anyone was going, ‘I wonder what H&M’s opinion on the unfolding situation on Afghanistan is?’

Two jokers who no one wants to hear from right now.

Would have been better to say ‘our thoughts are with Afghanistan’s who are fighting for their lives right now having seen friends and family die. We can make a very real difference to people’s lives by donating to xx and xx. This charity supports by doing xxx and xx

Mummyoflittledragon · 19/08/2021 00:25

@Roussette
You asked if H had whined since the OW interview. I appreciate it was more of a rhetorical question asserting he hasn’t. However, this is factually incorrect and when challenged on this point, instead of acknowledging this fact, you answered with a deflection. Frankly, two wrongs don’t make a right. Adults should acknowledge when the screw up.

I appreciate your are pro M&H. However, I cannot understand the obsession to paint them as saintly creatures, who can do no wrong. They are not. They make mistakes. They are human. And everyone would have a lot more sympathy for them if they and their fans could admit this.

I think you’d persuade more people over to your way of thinking if you could acknowledge that they, too are imperfect rather than unfathomably insisting they are infallible and perfect in every way.

@catinboots21

To be fair, I only come on these for *@Roussette*’s inevitable involvement

Same. I admire her dedication. I presume she's either retired or one of those royal loonies with a full sized Meghan cutout in her front room.

Her dedication is second to none 😬😬

It’s really not nice to pick on a poster like this.She has been bullied & followed around on & off MN and before. It was really disturbing and scary to witness.
UrbanRambler · 19/08/2021 00:39

@Cillmantain

I think they never miss an opportunity to promote themselves.
Exactly.
