So cute, love the photos of him at Wembley.
Especially the one of him hugging his Mum in excitement. Despite their wealth/ privilege they do seem to be a ‘normal’ family.
Wasn’t too fussed on Kate’s red earrings, though.

@ParsleyDill, my feelings exactly.

Pedantic point:

'Disinterested' doesn't mean 'not interested'.

It does have that meaning, as well as the other one.

I thought the royals yesterday showed how ridiculous the whole concept is. Driven around in police escorts to attend various sports finals and call it work, wearing expensive clothes, the best seats, fawned over etc. The inequality and sheer indulgence of it all is quite shocking. And why? Because they were born into it or married into it, nothing to deserve it on merit compared to some of the others at various events.

However saying that I don't believe attacking the family or individuals is correct. George looks like a lovely happy boy who has two loving parents, that's lovely to see. Who cares what he wore.

MagicSummer · 12/07/2021 16:52

@OliviaBean - I don't really get your argument. Even in Communist countries or countries with an elected head of state, the top people are still driven around with police escorts, have tickets for the best sports in the best seats, wear good clothes, etc. Are you saying that our RF should not be allowed to go to these events and wear nice clothes? Every country has to have some leader, whether elected or unelected, and I think our lot do a damn good job of it.

OliviaBean · 12/07/2021 17:09

@MagicSummer, I guess my argument is that I don't agree with unelected leaders, I believe in getting places on merit and being voted in by an the electorate. I don't believe in dictatorships or monarchies.

Love him or loathe him, Boris didn't just arrive as PM by being born. Look at Beckham, Tom Cruise, Kate Moss who were also in the VIP section at Wembley, all three are VIP's because they built careers with unique talents, what has royalty done to earn what they have?

Depends which online dictionary you choose.This makes it clear enough for UK usage.

@ThreeLocusts

What I don't get is how it is meritorious for a wildly privileged family to manage to 'appear' normal. Plus, I don't think they did, as you OP said yourself that few boys George's age would get into Wembley w/out being princes.

I used to think the royal family were a harmless piece of folklore when I first moved to the UK (from a country w/out a monarchy). Over the years, as I realized that the British class system has teeth and perpetuates inequality, I've come to think of them as a real burden on British society.

They may be perfectly 'nice' people - I don't know and I don't care - but there's nothing nice about their functional position in British society.

Well said. However, the real burden on British society is the approx. 50% of the population that actively enjoys behaving like medieval serfs and waving flags at benefits claimants with no right to claim.

Yeah, the one I posted was from the Oxford dictionary, so I'll take it.

The Cambridge one says 'many people' consider it wrong, not that it actually is wrong.

You're right, it's contentious even amongst the dictionaries.

Sorry for derail, OP, and Prince George (who I'm sure is avidly following the thread...)

@bendmeoverbackwards

Why didn't they bring Princess Charlotte too?
She prefers cricket.

Speaking of pedantry.................."it would have been nice to have seen him dressed more formalLY".

Sh05 · 14/07/2021 09:37

Prince George in his uniform, this was 2 years ago so he might have moved into junior years and so the uniform may be a little different now.

Can we have an “I AM A MISERY” section of MN and every bitter and joyless fr over there?
Yes please, some real miseries on this thread.

onlyhereforthecake · 14/07/2021 22:07

god forbid anyone is not fawning over the royals, what amazing parents they are, how down to earth and normal they are, and how lucky the world is to have them. Grin

Blossomtoes · 14/07/2021 22:20

God forbid anyone thinking they’re doing a pretty good job of raising their kids in a gilded cage.

What an unbelievably mean spirited thing to say.

You don't have to like them but to scoff and be scathing is quite horrible.
They do plenty, this little family are particularly good role models and they will have far more responsibility in time than others you have mentioned.

Themeparklover · 15/07/2021 02:03

Lovely family sweet lad

lollipoprainbow · 15/07/2021 07:59

How many more times are we going to read about what wonderful parents they are ?! Wouldn't most mums and dads hug their kids like that at a football match. The amount of fawning sycophantic articles about it is ridiculous !!

Serenster · 15/07/2021 10:35

It doesn’t bother me so much, @lollipoprainbow. The Royal family are definitely regarded as being stuffy and unaffectionate, despite some evidence to the contrary.

And it was openly suggested that Kate and William were cold parents (after Meghan and Harry left the UK early last year a “source close to Meghan” was reported as saying “She said [their trip back to London to attend some final events] has been a confirmation that they made the right choice in parting ways. There’s no warmth between the family members and she wants to raise Archie in a household that is filled with laughter and joy and lots of hugs.”)

Against that background it’s nice to see them looking genuinely happy, supportive and loving towards each other.

upinaballoon · 15/07/2021 10:42

I'm all in favour of a bit of fawning myself. Somewhere up thread I think someone suggested that if Royals didn't have such expensive clothes it would somehow have an effect on the need for foodbanks. I think several other moves would need to be made in order to get rid of food banks. While other people have grumbled about the wealthy lifestyle of the Royals I haven't noticed anyone suggest, so far, that some of the footballers and the football programme presenters and celebs at the match might just not EARN the money that they GET, either. Now I'm going to google Kate's earrings and see what I think.

WHAT was mean spirited in the post you are angry about? Confused

It was simple fact. By definition they didn't do anything to be where they are, they do very little indeed and YOU might find them a good role model, an uber privileged family who doesn't have to lift a finger, even have a guaranteed spot in any prestigious university they like... but I struggle to see how!

Even the Kardashian built their empire from scratch.

Blossomtoes · 15/07/2021 15:32

The tone, dear, the tone. Nasty and unnecessary.
