Harry to sue BBC

I just read Harry is going to sue the BBC for announcing the Queen wasn't consulted over the name Lilibet. They said she was told of their plans . Maybe told isnt quite the same as consulted. When is this all going to end. Seems to be getting worse instead of improving.

@randomkey123

What a horrid lot of conflict for a family already in deep mourning. I love that Prince Edward has said he's staying well out of it.
I’m surprised to find him so likeable recently.
SpindleWhorl · 10/06/2021 09:59

I agree - poor child. The name was pretty much guaranteed to draw more attention, not less, to her.

Whether that was a deliberate act or an inadvertent mistake, the outcome is the same for the child.

The Queen looks very, very frail.

RickiTarr · 10/06/2021 10:00

It’s a huge name for a tiny Californian.

IWantAllTheDogsInTheWorld · 10/06/2021 10:05

@Krook

Can't help but feel sorry for the poor baby, not even a week old and her name is everywhere in the press. She will have fun Googling herself in a few years time....I can't help thinking they M&H haven't thought through the impact all the hoo-ha will have on their children in years to come. I though above all else H wanted to protect them?
Well, imagine it's 2031 and little Lili is going to find out one of two things:

A) Her father did a stellar job of protecting her against the wicked media and won a massive payout and a retraction from the BBC over permission for use of her name or

B) Her father didn't win the retraction and payout from the BBC and was instead found to be telling "mistruths" about permission to use her name and the legal costs nearly bankrupted him.

Meanwhile, in the land of the real world, many are still scratching their heads and wondering why it matters so much anyway, there's bigger things to worry about.

Personally, I definitely need a better hobby, I can't believe I've sat and read this whole thread and I'm none the wiser!

Yes, naming a young daughter after not one but two of the best known and (generally held to be) most admired women in the world - no pressure, then! Grin

Yes. DH’s grandmother , who I loved, died before my dd was born. We did mull over giving dd her Great Grandmother’s name as a first name, but it seemed a lot to live up to, I felt she would have comparisons within the family etc ( DH’s grandmother was a memorable person and was very respected locally) . She has her name as a middle name instead, much less loaded with expectation. Giving your tiny baby the pet name of a living person who has been so loved is not terribly kind really. Who could possibly match up to the Queen ?

'I agree - poor child. The name was pretty much guaranteed to draw more attention, not less, to her.'

Yes so much for not wanting scrutiny, this was clearly going to cause controversy. We can only imagine the chips on the shoulders the Sussex juniors will grow up with being involved in this constant soap opera with all the festering bitterness.

I wonder why they didn't do the same for Archie and use one of Charle's names as a middle name, bearing in mind they were the family M never had a short time ago and in their engagement interview they both gushed about how amazing everyone had been. Until they were told they couldn't do as they pleased of course.

Zzelda · 10/06/2021 10:10

A) Her father did a stellar job of protecting her against the wicked media and won a massive payout and a retraction from the BBC over permission for use of her name

Even if he wins, I can't see the massive payout happening. What damage has he actually suffered through this? It's essentially utterly trivial. He's in danger of winning 1p and having to pay the BBC's costs.

alwayswithhope · 10/06/2021 10:11

Who could live up to the queen? A woman who inherited millions, lives in a castle and shakes hands with people and cuts ribbons and gives a little speech at dinners arranged for politicians! The child is named after her grandmother, who is a person - I’m sure she has plenty of flaws. She’s had a long career in public service but I wouldn’t say she is hard to live up to. I also highly doubt most people this child will meet in school etc where she will say hi I’m Lili, will think OMG called the queens nickname. The queen will be long gone by then and she’s being raised in a different country. You’re creating problems where there are none.

Oh I haven’t forgotten their money-making shenanigans, or his tantrum about It’s a knockout, and if still like a republic, but considering all of that, he can clearly do a pleasant manner when it suits him.

It just goes to show, he should have stuck to being useful all along, or maybe he mellowed. 🤷🏻‍♀️

SueSaid · 10/06/2021 10:15

'What a horrid lot of conflict for a family already in deep mourning. I love that Prince Edward has said he's staying well out of it.'

The rf are acting with such dignity and restraint. I'm not a royalist and would be happy for the whole thing to be shaken up and an end to the pomp and curtsying carry on, but to be trolled so brazenly by Harry and not respond

MaMelon · 10/06/2021 10:15

Or matured with age and experience as many of us do? Maybe there’s hope for H&M yet.

Serenster · 10/06/2021 10:15

@JaniieJones that is one of the things I find most difficult to rationalise about their choices. Senior working royals: completely non-royal name choices with no link whatsoever to the wider family. Left the royal family voluntarily due to it not being survivable: both names for the two most famous royal family members. You can’t make it make sense…

Puzzledandpissedoff · 10/06/2021 10:23

I can only hope the Queen's phone was tapped so we would know how Harry couched the name announcement

I don't know about "tapped", but I'd lay good money that they're recording any contacts at all with H&M

It would after all be the sensible thing to do, to guard against whatever other "revelations" they spout

SueSaid · 10/06/2021 10:24

'Left the royal family voluntarily due to it not being survivable: both names for the two most famous royal family members. You can’t make it make sense…'

They need the Queen connection for their LA lifestyle. They seem to be playing to the Oprah cheerleaders. How empty and grubby it must feel to live a life full of fake cheesy soundbites #bekind #LoveAlwaysWins yet have lawyers on speed dial and be so full of resentment about both families. Except the Queen because she's their meal ticket.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 10/06/2021 10:25

I think (the RF) are gaining respect in spite of the Sussex's cheap stunts

Which could well be the greatest irony of all ...

PreparationPreparationPrep · 10/06/2021 10:28

@alwayswithhope
TotAlly agree -
One of my Names is after my father's mother - but only my father remembers this - he is in his 80's. I even forget it sometimes as I didn't meet her. I know I'm Not the Queen Smile but really very few will Connect her to her GGM in her day to day life. It will only be the media trying to create stories every now and then ". I'm sure she will be well Placed to have a productive life ahead of her whether she is Lili / Lilibet or anything else.

PreparationPreparationPrep · 10/06/2021 10:32

I can only hope the Queen's phone was tapped so we would know how Harry couched the name announcement

Yes I would Imagine that due their previous experiences with the Firm - H&M will sensibly have all their Conversations recorded

IWantAllTheDogsInTheWorld · 10/06/2021 10:32

This is the outcome I'm hoping for.

Just as many do, I pay my TV licence so I can watch iPlayer when I'm ironing and the local news every now and again, sod giving any of MY money to Harry and his legal team because his feels have been hurt. I don't mind throwing my 2p in or whatever in taxes to HMQ and The Rest, I believe there is a place for a modern Royal family and they bring in a lot of income to the UK through tourism etc, plus it's nice just to have "something" to be proud of and cheerlead after a gruelling year.

So, if the BBC are standing firm with their source then I'm behind them and may the best team win.

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 10/06/2021 10:35

You’re creating problems where there are none.

Not as many problems as H&M will to be sure…

I’m glad they are a happy family unit. They’ll need that when they shut the drawbridge behind them.

I feel sorry for them now. I don’t see emboldened. I see petty and pitiful.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 10/06/2021 10:36

I’ve always liked the Wessex’s. They look to be the most normal of the lot. Sophie is fabulous, she is quiet in her work and very supportive to HMQ. She does a lot for GirlGuilding and seems to come across very likeable and down to Earth.

Edward saying he’s staying out of it is excellent.

PrimulaPrimrose · 10/06/2021 10:36

I hadn't thought of this in terms of license fee payers' money. Fair point.

It probably was taped, and the reason it has not been leaked to the press is most likely because H is correct and it works against what the RF are saying.
